MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a valid authenticated session in the CamaleonCMS admin panel - any user role capable of logging into /admin is sufficient, including the lowest-privilege 'client' role. The attacker must supply an arbitrary integer value as the user_id query parameter in a GET request to /admin/profile. No special server configuration, non-default feature flag, or plugin is required; the authorization gap exists in the default controller code shipped with the gem. Exploitation is bounded by the requirement for a pre-existing authenticated session - anonymous or unauthenticated access to the admin panel is not sufficient. Additionally, only profile data (email, username, role, custom fields) is disclosed; the flaw grants no write access, privilege escalation, or session control over other users. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) correctly characterizes this as a low-complexity, network-exploitable flaw requiring only a valid authenticated session. The confidentiality impact is bounded - profile data including email, username, and role is disclosed, but no write access or session hijacking is enabled. No EPSS data was supplied, and neither a CISA KEV listing nor a public POC is confirmed in the available intelligence; exploitation status is inferred as no public exploit based on absence of those signals from the VulnCheck report. Real-world risk hinges on who holds low-privilege accounts: even a mid-sized municipal IT team in boleslawiec running CamaleonCMS for a departmental site would face meaningful downstream phishing risk if attackers could silently harvest administrator email addresses and role assignments through this endpoint. The 5.3 CVSS score is appropriate - the limited confidentiality scope and authenticated prerequisite keep this from being a critical finding, but the trivial exploitability (no specialized tooling required) means it should be patched promptly rather than deferred. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with a low-privilege CamaleonCMS account - such as a 'client' role created for content submission - authenticates to the admin panel and sends a scripted series of GET requests to /admin/profile?user_id=1, ?user_id=2, and so on, iterating over the sequential integer ID space. Each response returns the target user's profile data, allowing the attacker to identify administrator accounts, harvest their email addresses and usernames, and use that data for targeted phishing or credential-stuffing against external services. No exploit code is confirmed publicly available, but the technique requires only curl or a browser and no specialized knowledge. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 11, 2026
Insecure Direct Object Reference in CamaleonCMS 2.9.2 and earlier allows any authenticated user to enumerate and read profile data belonging to any other user, including administrators. The Admin::UsersController#profile action was explicitly excluded from the validate_role authorization filter with no compensating ownership check, meaning a low-privilege 'client' role account can supply an arbitrary integer user_id query parameter to GET /admin/profile and receive the target user's email, username, role, and custom field data. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only a valid session and a loop over sequential integer IDs.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix is available via commit ae10da7cfce902a8552927c57b0a562fb1676040 and PR #1197 at https://github.com/owen2345/camaleon-cms/pull/1197; a specific patched gem release version is not confirmed in available data, so administrators should monitor the repository for a tagged release or apply the patch from the referenced commit directly. The one-line change adds authorize! :manage, :users if user_id.present? && @user.id != cama_current_user.id inside the profile action, which is sufficient to close the bypass. As a compensating control prior to patching, restrict access to the /admin/profile endpoint at the web server or WAF layer to known administrative IP ranges - note this blocks legitimate remote admin access as a trade-off. Alternatively, remove all non-admin user accounts from the CamaleonCMS admin panel entirely if business requirements permit, eliminating the attacker prerequisite of a valid low-privilege session.

Technical ContextAI · show details
CamaleonCMS is a Ruby on Rails content management system maintained under the owen2345 GitHub organization (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:owen2345:camaleoncms:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*). The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the controller's before_action chain applies the validate_role guard with an except: %i[profile profile_edit] exclusion. The validate_role guard enforces that a user_id parameter must match the current user's own ID or the caller must hold :manage :users permission. Because profile was excluded from this guard and the action itself performed no ownership check, any authenticated user could pass user_id=N and receive the corresponding user record. The fix (commit ae10da7cfce902a8552927c57b0a562fb1676040, PR #1197) adds an inline authorize! :manage, :users check inside the profile action that fires when user_id is present and does not match the current user's own ID, preserving self-profile access for non-admin users while blocking cross-user enumeration.

DescriptionCVE.org
CamaleonCMS version 2.9.2 and earlier contains a missing authorization vulnerability in the admin users controller that allows any authenticated user to access any other user's profile data by supplying an arbitrary user ID parameter. Attackers can send a GET request to the admin profile endpoint with an enumerable sequential integer user ID to disclose profile information of any user, including administrators, due to the profile action being excluded from the role validation filter with no compensating ownership check.
