Exploitation Conditions

Requires an attacker-controlled malicious or compromised sandboxed application (e.g., a Flatpak app) running under xdg-desktop-portal prior to version 1.22.1. That app calls the FileChooser.SaveFiles method supplying the optional 'files' filenames containing path-traversal components; because the filenames are validated neither by the frontend nor by common backends, they are appended to the user-selected directory and written to the host. Limiting factors: exploitation is bounded to creating files that do NOT already exist (existing files cannot be overwritten) and only in locations the invoking user already has write access to; it also depends on the user engaging the file save dialog, and on the deployment using an affected backend that performs no filename validation.

Impact

The vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 8.8 (High), driven by VI:H and an AV:N/PR:N/UI:N framing, but several signals temper the real-world urgency. No EPSS score was provided, the CVE is not in CISA KEV (not confirmed actively exploited), and no public exploit reference is supplied - the only references are the GHSA advisory and the 1.22.1 release notes. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a serious-but-not-emergency flaw: patch promptly, but this is not an act_now/emergency case. The most important caveat is that the vendor vector appears to overstate reach: xdg-desktop-portal is a local D-Bus service, and exploitation requires the attacker to already be running a malicious/compromised sandboxed (Flatpak) application and the user to operate a file save dialog - this maps far better to a local vector with user interaction than to AV:N/UI:N, so the 'remote unauthenticated network' reading should be verified against the local sandbox-escape mechanism described. Impact is further bounded: writes are limited to files that do not already exist and only to paths the invoking user can access (no overwrite of existing files). Net assessment: a genuine sandbox-escape integrity issue worth patching this week, but the 8.8 headline overstates the practical attack surface given the malicious-app precondition and the inability to overwrite existing files.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A user installs or runs a malicious or trojanized sandboxed (Flatpak) application. The app invokes FileChooser.SaveFiles with the optional 'files' option containing filenames that include path-traversal sequences; because neither the frontend nor common backends validate them, the backend appends them to the user-selected directory and creates a new file outside the sandbox - for example an autostart .desktop entry or a shell startup file in a location the user can write - enabling later code execution. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 23, 2026

Arbitrary file write outside the sandbox is possible through the FileChooser.SaveFiles portal method in xdg-desktop-portal before version 1.22.1: a malicious sandboxed application (for example a Flatpak app) can pass the optional 'files' filenames containing path-traversal components, which the frontend does not validate and which common backends append to the user-selected directory without checking. The result is the ability to create files at attacker-chosen paths on the host, bounded to files that do not already exist (existing files cannot be overwritten) and to locations the invoking user can write to, and it depends on the user engaging the save dialog. The vendor rates this 8.8 under CVSS 4.0, while the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:N/I:H/A:N, which tempers real-world urgency; no public exploit code has been identified and the issue is not in CISA KEV, with a vendor patch released in 1.22.1.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade xdg-desktop-portal to 1.22.1 (https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal/releases/tag/1.22.1), which the advisory confirms resolves GHSA-cm83-2936-gxjm together with two other flaws fixed in the same release - the drag-and-drop/copy-paste redirection via predictable keys in FileTransfer.RetrieveFiles (GHSA-c5cf-79w8-pvfh) and missing App ID validation in the Document Portal that allowed crafted App IDs to cause arbitrary host files to be parsed as Glib.KeyFiles (#2023) - so a single upgrade closes all three. The vendor explicitly states there is no known mitigation other than updating, so no configuration-level workaround is documented; the exposure is limited to sandboxed applications invoking FileChooser.SaveFiles through an affected backend, and exploitation requires the user to complete a save dialog. Technical ContextAI · show details

XDG Desktop Portal is the D-Bus mediation layer that lets confined applications (Flatpak and similar sandboxes) reach host desktop services such as file pickers. The FileChooser interface's SaveFiles method accepts an optional set of proposed filenames together with the directory the user selects in the native dialog; the portal frontend forwards those filenames unvalidated, relying on each backend implementation to reject or sanitise them, and the advisory states that common backends also fail to do so. Because the supplied names are simply appended to the selected directory, directory-traversal components in a filename cause the write to land outside that directory, which is CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory). The primitive is a create-only arbitrary write: the backends' expectation that the target file must not already exist means existing files are not overwritten, and the reachable locations are limited to those the invoking user can already write to. Exploitability therefore depends on the deployment - an affected backend that performs no filename validation, plus a user who actually completes a save dialog - and the assessed vector reflects that with AV:L, UI:R and S:C rather than the vendor's AV:N/PR:N/UI:N 4.0 framing. The product is identified as cpe:2.3:a:flatpak:xdg-desktop-portal, with all versions up to and including 1.22.0 affected.

DescriptionCVE.org

XDG Desktop Portal is a desktop integration portal. Prior to version 1.22.1, malicious sandboxed applications can use the FileChooser.SaveFiles method to gain arbitrary file access to non-existing files on the host (limited to files the user has access to). The FileChooser.SaveFiles method takes optional filenames which get appended to the selected directory by backends. The backends are supposed to check that the file does not exist yet. The filenames are not validated by the frontend and also not by common backends. This issue has been patched in version 1.22.1.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-55888 is a high-severity vulnerability in xdg-desktop-portal (before 1.22.1) that allows a malicious sandboxed application, such as a Flatpak app, to write files to attacker-chosen locations on the host system outside the sandbox. This compromises host integrity for Linux desktop users, particularly those running untrusted Flatpak applications. Leadership should care because it undermines the sandbox security model relied upon by many organizations, potentially enabling data tampering or malware staging on user endpoints.
