MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the victim to install a malicious noarch:python Conda package (the vulnerable path is specific to noarch:python entry-point generation) whose info/link.json contains an entry-point command with path separators, traversal segments (e.g. '.'/'..'), or an absolute path. Exploitation occurs during a default conda install or environment transaction - no special non-default configuration is needed - but it demands user interaction (the user must initiate the install) and delivery of the crafted package, typically via an untrusted, malicious, or typosquatted channel. The out-of-prefix write variant additionally requires that the target parent directory already exists; the in-prefix entry-point overwrite variant has no such limit but only detonates when that entry point is later invoked. Code runs with the installing user's privileges (no privilege escalation beyond that). |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 8.8 HIGH) is credible but its severity hinges entirely on the UI:R and delivery model: exploitation is not a remote drive-by against a running Conda service - it requires a victim to install a malicious noarch:python package whose info/link.json carries a crafted entry-point command. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC referenced in the inputs, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' rather than active exploitation. The confidentiality/integrity/availability all rated High reflect that a successful overwrite of an in-prefix entry point yields arbitrary Python execution with the installing user's privileges, which is a genuine code-execution outcome - so the high score is justified in impact terms, not inflated. The practical risk is gated by supply-chain trust: an attacker must get the target to install a poisoned package (e.g. from an untrusted or typosquatted channel). This is a real priority for anyone installing from untrusted Conda channels, but not a mass-exploitable network flaw. Note the AC:L is slightly optimistic for the out-of-prefix write variant, which the description says requires the target parent directory to already exist - the in-prefix entry-point overwrite variant, however, is reliable and needs no such precondition. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes or ships a malicious noarch:python Conda package whose info/link.json entry-point definition contains path-traversal segments, path separators, or an absolute path (e.g. a command that resolves outside bin/Scripts or overwrites an existing entry point). When a victim runs a normal conda install/environment transaction on that package, conda writes an executable wrapper to the attacker-chosen path; a subsequently invoked, overwritten entry point then executes attacker-controlled Python as the installing user. No public POC is referenced in the provided intelligence. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026
Conda versions prior to 26.5.2 will follow an unvalidated entry-point command from a noarch:python package's info/link.json and write the generated executable wrapper to a path that can escape the installation prefix or overwrite a different in-prefix entry point, a classic CWE-22 path traversal in the package installation workflow. The victim must install the malicious package themselves (UI:R) and the resulting code runs with the installing user's privileges rather than elevated rights; the out-of-prefix variant additionally requires the destination parent directory to already exist, while the overwritten-entry-point variant only detonates when that entry point is later invoked. CVSS 3.1 rates this 8.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Conda to version 26.5.2, the vendor-released patch, on every host and CI worker that performs installs; this is the only complete fix because the validation is performed client-side at install time, meaning a hardened channel or server-side scanner cannot substitute for it. For environments that cannot upgrade immediately, compensate by restricting the configured channel list to trusted, pinned sources and verifying package hashes so that a typosquatted or untrusted channel cannot deliver the crafted noarch:python package, and by pre-flight inspecting a candidate package's info/link.json for entry_point commands containing '/', '\\', '..' or a leading '.' before it is installed into a shared or privileged environment. Running installs inside containers or under a low-privilege account with write access confined to the target prefix limits the out-of-prefix variant, at the cost of added operational complexity and possible breakage of packages that legitimately write outside the prefix. Blocking the overwrite variant is harder since it only manifests when the hijacked entry point is later invoked, so treat any entry point that collides with one from another installed package as suspicious and review the dependency set of noarch:python packages from untrusted channels. As always, review the advisory at https://github.com/conda/conda/security/advisories/GHSA-9m8m-c4j3-rj2c and the diff in https://github.com/conda/conda/pull/16168 to confirm the exact validation behavior before designing custom controls.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Conda's noarch:python packages declare console scripts in metadata rather than shipping prebuilt executables; conda synthesizes those wrappers at install time, and that synthesis path is where the flaw lives. parse_entry_point_def in conda/common/path/python.py parsed an entry-point definition without checking the command component, CreatePythonEntryPointAction in conda/core/path_actions.py interpolated that command into target_short_path, PrefixPathAction.target_full_path then joined it to the installation prefix without verifying the result stayed under bin (POSIX) or Scripts (Windows), and create_python_entry_point in conda/gateways/disk/create.py finally wrote an executable wrapper to whatever path resulted. Any command containing path separators, traversal segments such as '.' or '..', or an absolute path therefore redirected the write. The upstream fix (PR #16168, commit 3987c86ccd5527177e96b48bd4dc1777dd2c9baa) hardens three layers: it rejects commands containing '/', '\\', NUL or newline characters as well as commands beginning with '.', and validates module and function names through a new is_valid_import_path helper that requires dot-separated non-keyword Python identifiers; it also asserts via normpath that target_short_path stays under Scripts/ on Windows and BIN_DIRECTORY on POSIX, and repeats import-path validation in create.py. The affected product is tracked generically as CPE cpe:2.3:a:conda:conda:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. all Conda builds before the fixed release.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Conda is a system-level binary package and environment manager that runs on major operating systems and platforms. Prior to 26.5.2, parse_entry_point_def in conda/common/path/python.py accepted an unvalidated entry-point command from a noarch:python package's info/link.json metadata. CreatePythonEntryPointAction in conda/core/path_actions.py interpolated that command into target_short_path, and PrefixPathAction.target_full_path joined it to the installation prefix without verifying that the result remained under the intended bin or Scripts directory. create_python_entry_point in conda/gateways/disk/create.py then wrote an executable wrapper to the resulting path. A malicious package could use path separators, traversal segments, or an absolute command path to write outside the prefix or overwrite another in-prefix entry point during default install and environment transactions. Out-of-prefix writes require the target parent directory to exist, while an overwritten entry point can execute attacker-controlled Python when later invoked with the installing user's privileges. This issue is fixed in version 26.5.2.

Executive ViewAI
An unpatched path-traversal flaw in Conda (CVE-2026-53940) lets a malicious noarch:python package steer where its generated command wrapper is written, allowing files to be placed outside the environment's installation prefix or an existing command from another package to be silently replaced. Any employee who installs an untrusted or typosquatted package could hand an attacker code execution under their own account and credentials, with no special privileges required on the attacker's side. Because data science, ML, and engineering workflows depend on Conda and routinely pull community packages, this affects a broad share of the development estate rather than a single isolated system, and no vendor patch is currently available to close it.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations: restrict package installs to an internally curated mirror with an allowlist; require review of info/link.json entry points for noarch:python packages before approval; run Conda installs in least-privilege containers or dedicated agents with no write access to the installation prefix's parent directories; scan environments for executables written outside the prefix or entry-point wrappers modified after install; prefer conda-forge/official signed channels and block unvetted channels in client configuration.
