DescriptionCVE.org

rsync before 3.5.0 contains an arbitrary file write vulnerability that allows attackers to write files outside the intended destination tree by specifying an absolute path via --temp-dir or --link-dest options. The rename-confinement logic is bypassed when these options resolve to paths outside the destination tree, enabling attacker-controlled values to write files to arbitrary locations accessible to the rsync process.

AnalysisAI

Arbitrary file write in rsync before 3.5.0 allows attackers who control --temp-dir or --link-dest option values to escape the intended destination tree by supplying absolute paths, bypassing the rename-confinement security boundary. Any filesystem location writable by the rsync process can be targeted, enabling overwrite of system files, configuration, or planted malicious content. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Identify rsync invocation accepting external option values
Delivery
Supply absolute out-of-tree path to --temp-dir or --link-dest
Exploit
Trigger rsync transfer operation (user interaction)
Execution
Rename-confinement check bypassed for out-of-tree path
Persist
Write attacker-controlled file content to arbitrary writable location
Impact
Overwrite high-value target (cron, keys, config) for persistence or escalation

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that an attacker can control or inject the value supplied to --temp-dir or --link-dest, specifically an absolute path resolving outside the destination directory. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VI:H/VA:H) indicates network-reachable exploitation with low complexity and no special attack requirements, constrained only by a user-interaction prerequisite (UI:P) - meaning some participation or triggering action is required for the exploit path to complete. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker who can influence the arguments passed to an rsync invocation - for example, through a misconfigured backup script that interpolates user-supplied paths, a server-side rsync daemon accepting client-controlled options, or a malicious rsync server pairing with an unpatched client - supplies an absolute path such as /etc or /root to --temp-dir or --link-dest. The rename-confinement check fails to flag the out-of-tree path, and rsync writes attacker-controlled file content directly to that location. …
Remediation Upgrade to rsync 3.5.0 or later, the confirmed major security release that resolves this flaw (release page: https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0; full changelog vs. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, conduct inventory of all systems running rsync versions prior to 3.5.0 and identify which instances allow external users or automated systems to influence --temp-dir or --link-dest parameters. …
