SecureDrop Client is a desktop app for journalists to securely communicate with sources and handle submissions on the SecureDrop Workstation. Prior to version 1.3.1, a malicious SecureDrop Server could bypass securedrop-proxy's origin limitation by responding with cross-origin redirects. SecureDrop Server itself has multiple layers of built-in hardening, and is a dedicated physical machine exposed on the internet only via Tor hidden services for the Source and Journalist interfaces, and optionally via remote SSH access over another Tor hidden service. A newsroom's SecureDrop Workstation communicates only with its own dedicated SecureDrop Server. Version 1.3.1 fixes the issue.
AnalysisAI
Cross-origin redirect bypass in SecureDrop Client prior to 1.3.1 allows a malicious SecureDrop Server to route the securedrop-proxy component's HTTP requests to arbitrary external origins, circumventing the proxy's intended origin restriction. The Rust-based proxy followed HTTP 3xx redirects without validation, so a server-side redirect response could silently exfiltrate request data to a cross-origin destination. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that the attacker control or have compromised the target newsroom's dedicated SecureDrop Server - the server must respond with a cross-origin HTTP redirect (status codes 301-308 with a cross-origin Location header). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS score of 3.7 (Low) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N accurately reflects a narrow threat surface. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade SecureDrop Client to version 1.3.1, which resolves the issue by setting RedirectPolicy::none() in the securedrop-proxy reqwest client builder, preventing any HTTP redirect from being followed. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
