Exploitation Conditions

The Mailu admin REST API must be explicitly enabled in the Mailu configuration - it is not the default state, so default Mailu installations are not affected. The attacker requires network-level reachability to the REST API endpoint; no authentication or credentials are needed (PR:N per CVSS vector). A valid user token must already exist in the system for the attacker to target; token identifiers may need to be known or enumerated. Exploitation is bounded to two specific actions: removing IP address restrictions from an existing token, and updating a token's comment field. It does not grant the ability to create new tokens, read credentials, or directly access mail data. The indirect escalation risk is that a previously IP-restricted token becomes usable from arbitrary IP addresses after exploitation.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N, score 7.5) accurately characterizes the attack profile: network-reachable, zero authentication, trivial complexity, and high integrity impact. The integrity impact is meaningful because removing IP allowlists from existing tokens can enable subsequent abuse of those tokens from arbitrary locations, potentially broadening an attacker's foothold into admin-level mail server operations. EPSS data was not provided in the intelligence, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified. The absence of a CISA KEV listing and no identified public exploit code moderates immediate urgency. The decisive risk-limiting factor is the non-default deployment condition: the REST API must be explicitly enabled by the operator. Environments with the API disabled - the default - are entirely unaffected, substantially reducing the realistic exposed population despite the high CVSS score.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with network access to a Mailu instance where the REST API is enabled sends an unauthenticated HTTP request to the token modification endpoint, targeting a user token by its identifier. The attacker removes the IP allowlist restriction from that token; the server completes the action without requiring credentials. The attacker then uses the now-unrestricted token from any IP address to interact with Mailu's admin API with the privileges that token carries. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only standard HTTP tooling given the trivial CVSS vector.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 20, 2026

Missing authorization in the Mailu admin REST API allows unauthenticated remote attackers to strip IP-based access restrictions from any existing user token or alter its comment field, effectively neutralizing a key access-control layer on API tokens. All Mailu deployments running versions prior to 2024.06.52 with the admin REST API explicitly enabled are affected. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing is identified at time of analysis, though the network-accessible, zero-authentication attack vector (PR:N, AC:L) makes this straightforward to leverage when the API is reachable.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Mailu 2024.06.52 by pulling the updated Docker image tag and redeploying - this is the definitive fix confirmed by the vendor advisory at https://github.com/Mailu/Mailu/security/advisories/GHSA-2w8v-6xr5-g9gh. For operators unable to patch immediately, the vendor-endorsed workaround is to disable the admin REST API entirely in Mailu's configuration; this eliminates the attack surface with no impact to mail delivery but will break any automation or integrations relying on the REST API. If the REST API cannot be disabled and is accessible beyond a trusted network, restrict access to the API endpoints at the firewall or reverse proxy layer to known-trusted IP ranges, reducing exposure until the upgrade is completed. No additional side effects from the patch upgrade are noted in the advisory.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Mailu is a self-hosted, open-source mail server suite distributed as a set of Docker images, integrating components such as Postfix, Dovecot, and a web-based admin interface. The vulnerability resides in its admin REST API, an optional management surface that exposes administrative functions over HTTP/HTTPS. The root cause is CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function): specific API endpoints responsible for modifying user token attributes - namely IP allowlist restrictions and comment fields - perform the requested action without verifying the caller's identity or authorization. IP restrictions on tokens are a security control that constrains token use to specified network addresses; their unauthorized removal allows a previously scoped token to be used from any IP. The REST API is not enabled by default, meaning the exposed code path requires explicit operator configuration to be reachable.

DescriptionCVE.org

Mailu is a mail server as a set of Docker images. Prior to version 2024.06.52, a missing authorization check in the Mailu admin REST API allows any unauthenticated attacker to remove any potential IP restriction or update the comment field from any existing user token provided the REST API is enabled. Upgrade to Mailu 2024.06.52 to receive a patch or, as a workaround, turn the REST API off.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Mailu's admin REST API contains an unauthenticated authorization flaw that allows remote attackers to disable IP-based access restrictions on API tokens, creating a critical gap in access controls for affected deployments. Organizations running Mailu versions before 2024.06.52 with the admin REST API explicitly enabled risk unauthorized token manipulation without authentication. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the network-accessible, unauthenticated attack vector makes exploitation straightforward if the API is internet-facing.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch: upgrade to Mailu version 2024.06.52 or later. Until patched, disable the admin REST API if operationally feasible, or restrict network access to the API endpoint through firewall rules to trusted internal networks only.
