Open ISES Tickets before 3.44.2 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in db_loader.php that allows authenticated attackers to inject arbitrary JavaScript by passing an unsanitized value through the multiple POST parameters (ticketshost, ticketsdb, ticketsuser, ticketspassword, ticketsprefix, db_schema) directly into HTML form input value attributes. Attackers can craft a malicious request containing a JavaScript payload that executes in the victim's browser when the response is rendered.
AnalysisAI
Reflected XSS in Open ISES Tickets before v3.44.2 allows JavaScript injection via six unsanitized POST parameters in db_loader.php (ticketshost, ticketsdb, ticketsuser, ticketspassword, ticketsprefix, db_schema), each reflected verbatim into HTML form input value attributes. An attacker who can deliver a crafted POST request to a victim's browser can execute arbitrary JavaScript in the victim's session context, enabling session hijacking or credential theft. The vendor-confirmed fix (v3.44.2) was released as a critical security update resolving 88 total vulnerabilities; no public exploit or CISA KEV listing is identified at time of analysis.
Technical ContextAI
This is a classic reflected XSS (CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) in a PHP web application. The db_loader.php script accepts multiple POST parameters and echoes their raw values directly into HTML form input value attributes without output encoding or sanitization, allowing an attacker to break out of the attribute context and inject script. The affected product is cpe:2.3:a:open_ises:tickets:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering all versions prior to 3.44.2. Notably, v3.44.2 patched 69 XSS issues across 22 PHP files alongside 19 SQL injection vulnerabilities, indicating a systemic and pervasive absence of output encoding and input validation throughout the codebase rather than an isolated coding error.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Open ISES Tickets v3.44.2 immediately; the vendor designates this a 'Critical Security Update - All Users Should Upgrade Immediately.' The specific patch commit is ecfeb406a016766cae81c749e14b5145a9f2dbff (https://github.com/openises/tickets/commit/ecfeb406a016766cae81c749e14b5145a9f2dbff). For Docker deployments, run docker compose pull && docker compose up -d. For traditional deployments, download the zip archive from the release page, extract it over the existing installation, and run the installer in Upgrade mode. If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict access to db_loader.php at the web server level (e.g., via IP allowlist or require HTTP authentication) to limit who can submit POST requests to the endpoint - this reduces XSS delivery surface but does not address the underlying SQL injection or other vulnerabilities patched in the same release. Remaining on any pre-3.44.2 version leaves the system exposed to 19 SQL injection vulnerabilities, 5 hardcoded secrets, and 68 additional XSS issues beyond this CVE.
