| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid authenticated GLPI session at any privilege level (PR:L) - the flaw is in the profile-picture update flow available to ordinary self-service users, so no admin rights are needed. The affected feature (updating one's profile picture) is present in default installations of GLPI 10.0.0 through pre-10.0.26 and pre-11.0.8, so no non-default configuration is required. Exploitation is limited only by the need to log in first and by which files the web/application service account has permission to delete on the host filesystem. |
| Impact | This is a genuine, actionable vulnerability rather than a paper-high CVSS. The CVSS 4.0 vector (8.5) shows network access, low complexity, no user interaction, and only low privileges required (PR:L) - meaning ANY authenticated GLPI user (the lowest self-service account) can trigger it against the default configuration. The impact profile is deliberately integrity/availability-focused: VC:N (no data read), but VI:H/VA:H plus SI:H/SA:H, consistent with arbitrary file deletion that can corrupt application config/data and take the instance offline. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the risk is driven by ease of exploitation and low auth bar, not by observed in-the-wild activity. The main mitigating signal is that exploitation requires a valid login (PR:L), so it is not internet-unauthenticated. The subsequent-system impact metrics (SI:H/SA:H) in the vendor vector are somewhat aggressive since the affected asset IS the GLPI server itself (no true scope change to a separate system); this does not change the practical severity but is worth noting. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged but authenticated GLPI user submits a crafted profile-picture update request whose file path traverses outside the intended avatar directory (e.g. pointing at a GLPI config file, database artifact, or plugin file). The insufficient path validation causes the server to delete that attacker-chosen file, corrupting the installation or causing denial of service. No public exploit code was provided, but the patch (adding a validation |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Insufficient path validation in GLPI's profile-picture update flow lets any authenticated user - including ordinary self-service accounts with no administrative rights - force the application to delete an attacker-selected file on the server's filesystem. Affected releases are GLPI 10.0.0 through 10.0.25 and 11.0.x before 11.0.8; the flaw is fixed in 10.0.26 and 11.0.8. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV, but the CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.5 reflects a remote (AV:N), low-complexity (AC:L) attack with high integrity and availability impact once a valid low-privilege session (PR:L) is obtained.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to the fixed releases: GLPI 10.0.26 (https://github.com/glpi-project/glpi/releases/tag/10.0.26) for the 10.0.x line, or GLPI 11.0.8 (https://github.com/glpi-project/glpi/releases/tag/11.0.8) for the 11.0.x line, per advisory GHSA-x5r8-r6vj-79cw; alternatively, backport the upstream changes in commits 54306faf6a724321ba82c53c7c07ff6612a0d832 and 78ec583051bac3c1b3f9d21729c55cac62afa2f3 if an immediate upgrade is not possible. If patching must be deferred, the highest-value compensating control is to reduce the reachable filesystem surface rather than to disable the feature outright: run the GLPI web/application process under an account with least privilege so it owns and can delete only the GLPI data, upload and temporary directories - this does not close the bug but sharply limits which files can be targeted, at the cost of possible breakage if GLPI is currently expected to manage files elsewhere. A blunter option is to remove the picture-update capability from self-service profiles (or globally restrict profile editing), which eliminates the attack path entirely but degrades normal helpdesk self-service functionality. Additionally, restrict network access to the GLPI web interface to trusted management networks or a VPN and monitor application logs for anomalous profile-update requests containing traversal sequences or absolute paths; note that this is only a detection/deterrence layer and does not remove the underlying flaw. No vendor-released patch is missing here - fixes exist - and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so prioritize by exposure of the GLPI instance rather than by observed exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
At the root is CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory, i.e. path traversal) in GLPI's PHP codebase. GLPI is a free asset and IT management platform, and its user profile editor accepts an uploaded/named picture value that is subsequently used when the application removes the previous picture file. Because the supplied path component is not normalized or constrained to the expected pictures directory, a crafted value can escape that directory and reference an arbitrary file reachable by the web/application service account, which is then unlinked. The supplied source evidence points to src/User.php, where the fix adds an early 'return false' in prepareInputForUpdate, i.e. the vulnerable input handling lives in the user update preparation path used by the profile-picture flow. The affected package is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:glpi-project:glpi, an unversioned wildcard covering all GLPI releases, so version scoping must come from the advisory: 10.0.0 through pre-10.0.26 and 11.0.0 through pre-11.0.8. This is a file-deletion primitive, not code execution: the practical blast radius is bounded by the filesystem permissions of the account running the GLPI web service and by which files an attacker knows the path to (lock files, caches, sessions, uploaded attachments, logs, installation artifacts such as config files or install/lock markers), any of which could degrade availability or enable follow-on abuse such as forcing reinstallation workflows.

2DescriptionCVE.org
GLPI is a free asset and IT management software package. From 10.0.0 until 10.0.26 and 11.0.8, any logged-in GLPI user can exploit insufficient path validation in the profile-picture update flow to request deletion of an attacker-selected file hosted by the server. This issue is fixed in versions 11.0.8 and 10.0.26.
Technical POC Analysis
Bug class: path traversal / insufficient path validation (CWE-22), resulting in arbitrary file deletion.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
GLPI, the IT service management and asset-inventory platform that underpins helpdesk operations, allows any authenticated user - including ordinary self-service accounts with no administrative rights - to force deletion of an arbitrary file on the server that hosts it. Because the attack needs only a valid low-privilege login and no special conditions, a routine helpdesk or self-service account could be used to destroy configuration, data, or service files, disrupting IT support operations and potentially destroying records the organization relies on. This is an insider-adjacent availability and integrity risk rather than an external intrusion threat: no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV, but the low barrier of an authenticated session makes it worth prioritizing.
Apply vendor patch (GLPI 10.0.26 or 11.0.8 per the advisory; confirm availability with the vendor as the patch-status feed reports none). Where upgrade cannot be applied immediately: restrict the profile-picture update capability for self-service and other non-administrative profiles, reduce the number of accounts able to reach the affected function, run the GLPI service under a least-privilege service account with write access limited strictly to required directories, restrict network exposure of the GLPI interface to trusted networks or VPN, and enable file-integrity monitoring and alerting on unexpected file deletions across GLPI hosts.
