DescriptionCVE.org

Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection') vulnerability in Apache CloudStack's NAS backup provider plugin. The addBackupRepository API (available since 4.20.0.0) and updateBackupRepository API (introduced in 4.22.0.0) accept unsanitized command options for the backup repository. A malicious operator account can exploit this to inject arbitrary commands that execute on the KVM hypervisor host when any account subsequently performs a backup restore.

This issue affects Apache CloudStack: from 4.20.0.0 through 4.20.3.0 and from 4.21.0.0 through 4.22.1.0.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 4.20.3.1 or 4.22.1.1 or later, which fixes the issue.

AnalysisAI

OS command injection in Apache CloudStack's NAS backup provider plugin enables an authenticated operator account to execute arbitrary commands on KVM hypervisor hosts by supplying unsanitized shell metacharacters to the addBackupRepository or updateBackupRepository management APIs. Affected deployments span versions 4.20.0.0 through 4.22.1.0 when the NAS backup provider plugin is in use; exploitation is deferred and triggered when any downstream account performs a backup restore. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires a CloudStack operator-level account (PR:L per CVSS vector) - standard user accounts cannot invoke the addBackupRepository or updateBackupRepository APIs. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The vendor-assigned CVSS 3.1 score of 8.8 (High) reflects network-accessible exploitation with low privilege requirements and full CIA impact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade Apache CloudStack to version 4.20.3.1 (for the 4.20.x branch) or 4.22.1.1 (for the 4.22.x branch) or later, per the vendor advisory at https://lists.apache.org/thread/g6cwddtjrwbh1d56wjz4cfp3fzfm4kbc. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all CloudStack deployments running versions 4.20.0.0 through 4.22.1.0 with the NAS backup provider plugin enabled and identify all users with access to addBackupRepository and updateBackupRepository APIs. …
