Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires network position on the same Fly private 6PN mesh as the target - in practice, controlling another sm-ws-* Fly Machine in the same Fly app/org - because the workspace HTTP service binds 0.0.0.0:8080 but is only routable to 6PN peers, not the public internet. Given that position, no authentication, credentials, origin check, or user interaction is needed: the /file/<path> and /archive/<dir> endpoints serve arbitrary files under /workspace to any peer, and peers are discoverable via the unauthenticated _instances.internal TXT record. Limiting factors: the attacker must already be a tenant/workspace on the shared org (not remotely anonymous over the internet), and affected versions are 0.2.247 and prior. Single-tenant or network-isolated deployments are not reachable by outside parties.

Impact

This is a genuine cross-tenant data-exposure flaw, but its reachability is bounded by network topology rather than open to the internet. The vendor CVSS vector is AV:A (adjacent), not AV:N - exploitation requires being a peer on the same Fly private 6PN network, i.e. controlling another sm-ws-* machine in the same Fly app/org. Within that adjacency the flaw is trivial: AC:L, no authentication on the /file and /archive endpoints (CWE-306), and any peer can enumerate others via the unauthenticated _instances.internal TXT record. There is no EPSS, no KEV listing, and no public POC, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The vendor score of 8.3 is driven largely by S:C plus I:H/A:L, which look inflated: the described endpoints (/health, /file/<path>, /archive/<dir>) are read-only file-disclosure paths, so the real impact is confidentiality (C:H) with integrity/availability effects not substantiated by the description - I assess I:N/A:N, yielding roughly 6.8. Also note the vendor set PR:H while the described precondition is merely owning any workspace on the shared org, which is closer to PR:L. Net: a real and easily-triggered cross-tenant read for anyone already tenant on a shared Soft Machine deployment, but not internet-exposed and not (yet) known-exploited. Priority is elevated for multi-tenant operators of this platform, low for everyone else. No patch is available at publication, which raises urgency for affected operators.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker signs up for or already controls one workspace (sm-ws-*) on a shared Soft Machine Fly app, then queries the unauthenticated _instances.internal TXT record to enumerate all peer workspace addresses on the 6PN private network. They connect to TCP/8080 on a victim's workspace and call /archive/<dir> or /file/<path> to download another tenant's entire /workspace project tree, including source code and secrets, with no authentication. No public exploit code is known, but the technique requires only standard HTTP requests.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026

Cross-tenant data disclosure in Soft Machine workspaces running version 0.2.247 and prior lets any peer Fly Machine on the same private 6PN mesh read arbitrary files under a workspace's /workspace root and pull entire project trees as tar archives through the unauthenticated /file/<path> and /archive/<dir> endpoints exposed on 0.0.0.0:8080. Exploitation is bounded by network topology rather than open to the internet: an authenticated tenant that controls another sm-ws-* machine in the same Fly app/org can reach peer workspaces (discoverable via the unauthenticated _instances.internal TXT record) with no further authentication, credentials, origin check, or user interaction, while single-tenant or network-isolated deployments are unreachable by outside parties. At time of analysis no public exploit code has been identified and no vendor patch is available, but the missing trust boundary between workspace owner and co-tenants makes this a genuine confidentiality risk anywhere multiple tenants share a Fly org.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch is identified at time of analysis - the advisory notes there are no publicly known patches for versions 0.2.247 and prior, and users should monitor GHSA-h6g6-qr45-qmrr (https://github.com/Soft-Machine-io/security/security/advisories/GHSA-h6g6-qr45-qmrr) for an update. Until a fix ships, apply compensating controls in order of effectiveness: run workspaces in single-tenant Fly orgs or apps so no untrusted peer shares the 6PN mesh (this fully removes the attack path, at the cost of per-tenant isolation and higher operational overhead); rebind the workspace service from 0.0.0.0:8080 to 127.0.0.1 or remove it entirely where file/archive access is not needed (side effect: any legitimate local tooling relying on the endpoint must be reworked, and remote workspace access will stop working); block inbound TCP/8080 on the 6PN interface via Fly firewall/network policy so only explicitly trusted machine identities can connect (side effect: peer-to-peer workspace features break until allowlists are tuned); and front the endpoints with a mandatory authentication and origin-check proxy, rejecting the unauthenticated _instances.internal discovery pattern as a trust source. Treat any workspace that previously shared an org with other tenants as potentially compromised and rotate secrets and credentials that were accessible under /workspace.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Soft Machine is a Virtual-Machine-based agentic development environment / Cloud OS in which each developer workspace runs as its own Fly Machine (sm-ws-* prefix) inside a shared Fly organization. Each workspace runs an HTTP service bound to 0.0.0.0:8080 that exposes /health, /file/<path>, and /archive/<dir>, but implements none of the authentication or origin validation these file-serving functions require - the classic CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function) pattern. Because the service listens on the wildcard address and every workspace joins the same Fly private 6PN mesh, reachability is not confined to the owning user: any peer machine in the same app/org can route to TCP/8080, and peer addresses are published through the unauthenticated _instances.internal TXT record, effectively giving attackers an auto-generated directory of targets. The absence of an owner-vs-everyone-else trust boundary means read access to the /workspace root is equivalent to exfiltration of source code, configuration, and secrets held in project trees. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:soft-machine-io:security:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected Soft Machine product line. Consistent with the independent assessment (CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N), impact is limited to confidentiality (high) with no demonstrated integrity or availability effect and a Changed scope, placing the practical threat well below the feed-published 8.3 that assumes broader privileges and write access.

DescriptionCVE.org

Soft Machine is a Virtual Machine-based agentic development environment / Cloud OS. In versions 0.2.247 and prior, the workspace HTTP service that listens on 0.0.0.0:8080 inside each sm-ws-* Fly Machine exposes endpoints (/health, /file/<path>, /archive/<dir>) without any authentication or origin check. Any host that can reach TCP/8080 on a workspace can read arbitrary files under that workspace's /workspace root and download whole project trees as tar archives. Because every workspace shares the same Fly private 6PN and resolves all peer addresses via the unauthenticated _instances.internal TXT record, every other sm-ws-* machine on the same Fly app/org is a reachable, unauthenticated attacker - the trust boundary (workspace owner ↔ everyone-else) is missing. At time of publication, there are no publicly known patches.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Soft Machine workspaces at version 0.2.247 and prior create a cross-tenant confidentiality exposure for organizations that host multiple workspaces in a shared Fly environment. Project files and full workspace archives may be accessible to other tenants, risking disclosure of source code, secrets, and other sensitive data. Leadership should treat this as a high-priority trust and compliance issue; no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, and network isolation is the primary mitigation.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: isolate Soft Machine workspaces to single-tenant Fly apps or private networks; block peer-to-peer 6PN access to 0.0.0.0:8080; restrict or disable _instances.internal TXT record discovery; enforce network policies or firewall rules between Fly Machines; place an authenticating proxy in front of /file/<path> and /archive/<dir>; rotate credentials or secrets that could be exposed by workspace file access; monitor for cross-tenant access.
