Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a victim to click an attacker-crafted link that targets the plugin's unvalidated redirect/forward parameter (UI:R in the vector), so it cannot be triggered silently or server-side. No authentication is required (PR:N) and the flaw is reachable over the network against default installations of the Aculect AI Companion plugin (versions through 0.8.1). The practical limiting factors are the mandatory user interaction, the low-value impact (redirection/phishing only, no data access or code execution), and the apparently small deployment footprint of this specific plugin.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity open redirect (CWE-601) with a CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.7, consistent with its vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N): network-reachable and unauthenticated but requiring user interaction, with only low confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, KEV listing, or POC indicator was supplied in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The signals are internally consistent - a low-impact phishing-enabler flaw, not a code-execution bug - so this reads as a genuinely low-priority issue rather than a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk mismatch. The dominant risk driver is not technical impact but the social-engineering value of abusing a trusted plugin domain to redirect victims; the UI:R requirement (victim must follow a crafted link) and the niche footprint of the affected plugin further constrain real-world risk. Key missing data: no EPSS probability, no KEV/POC confirmation, and no vendor advisory beyond the Patchstack database entry.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a URL pointing at a vulnerable Aculect AI Companion endpoint that embeds an attacker-controlled redirect target, then distributes it via email or social media. A victim who trusts the legitimate WordPress site's domain clicks the link and is silently forwarded to an attacker-controlled phishing page. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the crafted-link technique is trivial given AC:L and no authentication requirement.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026

An open redirect (CWE-601) in the WordPress plugin Aculect AI Companion, affecting all versions through 0.8.1, lets remote attackers craft a link that bounces a victim to an arbitrary external site after they click it. The flaw is reachable over the network without authentication (PR:N) but requires user interaction (UI:R) per the assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N, giving a moderate base score of 4.7 with only low confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact. Because exploitation is limited to redirection and phishing rather than data access or code execution, and the plugin has a small deployment footprint, real-world risk is modest; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis, so the primary action is to update to any fixed release the vendor publishes and to monitor the Patchstack advisory at https://patchstack.com/database/wordpress/plugin/aculect-ai-companion/vulnerability/wordpress-aculect-ai-companion-plugin-0-8-1-unvalidated-redirects-and-forwards-vulnerability?_s_id=cve for the corrected version. Where the plugin's features are not in active use, deactivate and remove it entirely - this eliminates the attack surface with no functional loss, and is the cleanest compensating control. If the plugin must stay installed, place a web-application-firewall or reverse-proxy rule in front of the site that inspects requests to the plugin's handler endpoints and blocks or rewrites any redirect parameter whose target host is not on an internal allowlist, accepting the trade-off of occasional false positives for legitimate external redirects and ongoing rule maintenance. Administrators can also reduce the phishing payoff by hardening the surrounding environment - enabling email authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC) and user awareness messaging so that a bounced link to an attacker-controlled page is less likely to be acted on - though these do not remove the redirect itself. Because exploitation requires the victim to click an attacker-supplied link, keeping the plugin's exposed endpoints out of indexed, publicly advertised URLs and avoiding its use in any user-facing link generation limits practical exposure. Note that simply restricting access to wp-admin does not help here, since the vulnerable redirect is reachable on the front end without authentication (PR:N).

Technical ContextAI · show details

CWE-601 (URL Redirection to Untrusted Site / 'Open Redirect') is a classic web-application weakness in which the application accepts a user-supplied destination parameter and issues an HTTP redirect to it without validating that the target belongs to a trusted domain or an allowlist. In this case the weakness lives in the WordPress plugin Aculect AI Companion, published by Mehul Gohil and distributed through the WordPress plugin ecosystem. WordPress plugins commonly expose handler endpoints (admin-ajax.php actions, REST routes, or direct PHP files) that accept a 'redirect_to', 'url', 'return', or similar parameter, and the unsafe pattern is to pass that value straight into wp_redirect()/header('Location: ...') without wp_safe_redirect() or an explicit host check. The affected CPE cpe:2.3:a:mehul_gohil:aculect_ai_companion:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* represents the plugin as a whole (vendor Mehul Gohil, product aculect_ai_companion), with the version range extending from the earliest release through 0.8.1. Notably the CVSS scope is changed (S:C), reflecting that the redirect can carry the victim to a resource outside the plugin's own security authority - typically an attacker-controlled phishing page that mimics a trusted login or account screen. The vulnerability is not memory-safety related and does not permit server-side code execution or data extraction; its abuse value is entirely in lending the trusted domain's reputation to a malicious destination.
