| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to first obtain a valid Qsync Central user account (PR:L), meaning this is an authenticated attack - it is NOT reachable by fully unauthenticated internet attackers against default configurations. Once authenticated, the attacker supplies path-traversal input to a file-handling function in Qsync Central to escape the intended directory and read files or system data outside the authorized scope. Limiting factors: valid credentials/account on the NAS are mandatory; risk is elevated on multi-user or publicly accessible QNAP deployments where untrusted users hold accounts, and reduced on single-admin or network-isolated installations. Affected versions are those prior to Qsync Central 5.0.0.6, 5.1.0.2, and 5.2.0.4. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-priority, authenticated information-disclosure flaw rather than a drop-everything emergency. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity attack requiring a valid low-privileged user account (PR:L), which materially limits mass exploitation. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' A significant internal conflict exists in the signals: the description states the attacker can 'read the contents of unexpected files or system data' (a confidentiality impact), yet the vendor vector sets VC:N (no confidentiality impact) while asserting VI:H and VA:H (high integrity and availability impact). For a CWE-22 path traversal described purely as a file-read primitive, the impact metrics appear mislabeled - confidentiality should be the primary impact. This discrepancy should be verified with QNAP before relying on the published 7.2 score for prioritization. Net: a real but authentication-gated issue warranting patching on exposed/multi-user NAS deployments, not an unauthenticated internet-wormable bug. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained or been granted a standard low-privileged Qsync Central user account sends a crafted request containing directory-traversal sequences to a file-handling endpoint. Because input is not properly constrained to the intended directory, the server returns the contents of arbitrary files outside the sync scope, such as configuration files, credentials, or other users' data. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires valid authentication (PR:L). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Path traversal in QNAP Qsync Central allows an attacker who already holds a valid Qsync Central user account to read files and system data outside the intended directory scope on the NAS. The flaw originates from improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory (CWE-22); because the CVSS vector specifies PR:L, exploitation is authenticated - remote unauthenticated Internet attackers cannot reach it against default configurations. Impact is assessed as information disclosure of high confidentiality value rather than code execution or data destruction, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. All versions prior to Qsync Central 5.0.0.6, 5.1.0.2, and 5.2.0.4 are affected, and QNAP has released fixed builds on each of these branches.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a vendor-released patched build: Qsync Central 5.0.0.6 or later, 5.1.0.2 or later, or 5.2.0.4 or later, available through QNAP's App Center and documented in the release notes at https://www.qnap.com/en/app-release-notes?keyword=Qsync%20&app=QsyncServer&product-line=nas. Because the attack requires a valid account, the most effective compensating controls are to audit and prune Qsync Central user accounts, enforce least privilege on who may hold an account, and enable strong authentication (password complexity, account lockout, and MFA where the NAS supports it) - the trade-off is added administrative overhead and possible friction for legitimate sync users. If patching cannot be done immediately, restrict network reachability of the Qsync service to trusted LAN or VPN segments and block its management/sync ports from the internet via firewall rules, accepting that off-site synchronization clients will stop working until access is restored. Additional hardening that lowers the payoff of a successful traversal includes disabling or revoking unnecessary share and app privileges for low-privilege accounts and keeping NAS firmware current; note that these are partial mitigations only and do not remove the underlying traversal flaw, so the patched build remains the required fix. There is currently no indication that unpatched systems are being actively exploited, so this should be scheduled as a priority maintenance action on multi-user or internet-exposed QNAP deployments rather than treated as an emergency.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a classic directory traversal (CWE-22) in Qsync Central, the server-side component that manages QNAP's Qsync file-synchronization service on the NAS. The file-handling routine accepts a user-influenced path but fails to canonicalize and constrain it against a permitted base directory, so traversal sequences such as ../ can be used to escape the authorized scope and reference files elsewhere on the volume or system. The root-cause class is improper input neutralization of path delimiters combined with missing post-resolution validation against an allowlisted root; the CPE cpe:2.3:a:qnap_systems_inc.:qsync_central:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms the affected component is Qsync Central itself (all versions), a product of QNAP Systems Inc. The published CVSS v4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) confirms a network-reachable, low-complexity, no-user-interaction attack that nonetheless requires prior authorization at the low-privilege level - i.e., any ordinary account on the NAS. Our independent assessment rates the realistic impact as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N: high confidentiality loss with no assessed integrity or availability effect, since the primitive described is file and system-data read rather than write or denial of service.

A path traversal vulnerability has been reported to affect Qsync Central. If a remote attacker gains a user account, they can then exploit the vulnerability to read the contents of unexpected files or system data.
We have already fixed the vulnerability in the following version: Qsync Central 5.0.0.6 and later Qsync Central 5.1.0.2 and later Qsync Central 5.2.0.4 and later
Executive ViewAI
QNAP Qsync Central, a file synchronization application for QNAP NAS devices, contains a path traversal vulnerability (CVE-2026-26243) that allows an authenticated attacker to read files and system data outside the intended directory scope. All versions prior to Qsync Central 5.0.0.6, 5.1.0.2, and 5.2.0.4 are affected, and while no public exploit code has been identified, the high confidentiality impact means sensitive organizational data could be exposed to insiders or compromised accounts. Leadership should prioritize patching because affected NAS systems often store critical business information and the vulnerability requires only a valid user account to exploit.
