| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated tenant holding a valid workspace token on a Beta9 deployment (PR:L). The attacker deploys a function, endpoint, or task queue and attaches a volume whose identifier contains parent-directory ('..') segments, so the gateway-built host path (shared volumes root + workspace name + attacker-controlled identifier) collapses to the worker's filesystem root; the gateway performs no ownership check that the identifier names a volume the workspace owns. The mount is bind-mounted read-write unless the volume was explicitly marked read-only, which is the only in-product limit on write access. Cross-tenant impact (reading/writing other tenants' volumes) requires a multi-tenant worker where other tenants' data is colocated on the same machine. Affected: gateway <=0.1.769 and worker <=0.1.745 (confirmed vulnerable); the fix also re-checks stubs persisted before validation existed. |
| Impact | Multiple signals align on genuine high priority, though not all signals are present. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 9.9) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw needing only low privileges (a tenant workspace token) with a scope change and total confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact - consistent with the description of a path-traversal (CWE-22) tenant isolation break. The vuln.today decision label is act_now and the vendor has shipped a patch, reinforcing urgency. However, no EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified, and there is no CISA KEV listing, so this is NOT confirmed actively exploited. No working public exploit is identified in the references (they are vendor patch/release artifacts only); the fix's own test cases demonstrate the traversal payload (e.g. id "../../..") but that is remediation test code, not a weaponized exploit. The key caveat: PR:L correctly reflects that an attacker must already hold a valid workspace token on a multi-tenant Beta9 deployment - this is an authenticated tenant-to-tenant escalation, not anonymous internet exploitation, which tempers raw-score urgency for single-tenant or non-exposed deployments. For any shared/multi-tenant Beta9 platform this is a real priority; for isolated single-tenant use the cross-tenant blast radius does not apply. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A malicious or compromised tenant on a shared Beta9 platform deploys a function, endpoint, or task queue and attaches a volume whose identifier contains parent-directory segments (e.g. "../../.."); the gateway joins this into a host path that collapses to the worker's filesystem root, and the worker bind-mounts it read-write into the attacker's sandbox. The attacker can then read and modify the worker's files and other tenants' volumes stored on that machine. No public working exploit is identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires a valid workspace token. |

Path traversal in the Beta9 gateway and worker lets a tenant holding a valid workspace token deploy a function, endpoint, or task queue with a volume identifier containing '..' segments, collapsing the gateway-built host path to the worker's filesystem root and bind-mounting it read-write into the sandbox. This allows an authenticated attacker to read and write the worker's files, including other tenants' volumes colocated on the same machine; CVSS 3.1 is 9.9 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) with scope change. Gateway 0.1.769 and worker 0.1.745 are confirmed vulnerable, with fixes released in gateway 0.1.776 and worker 0.1.756; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the vendor-supplied patch details are public and the priority label is act_now.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to the fixed releases: Beta9 gateway 0.1.776 (https://github.com/beam-cloud/beta9/releases/tag/gateway-0.1.776) and worker 0.1.756 (https://github.com/beam-cloud/beta9/releases/tag/worker-0.1.756), which correspond to upstream PR https://github.com/beam-cloud/beta9/pull/1897 and commit https://github.com/beam-cloud/beta9/commit/a28bf12cf0007c792a25d8ed282b4e8bf6f30393. Both components should be updated because the fix is split across them: the gateway performs the volume-ownership and identifier validation when a stub is configured, and the worker re-validates before a bind mount is built, which also covers stub configurations persisted before the check existed, so previously saved malicious or malformed volume identifiers are rejected at mount time after the upgrade. Until patched, the only in-product limit described is that volumes explicitly marked read-only are not bind-mounted read-write, which restricts the integrity impact but does not prevent traversal-based read access to the worker's files; scheduling tenants onto separate workers limits the cross-tenant exposure but does not remove the host filesystem reachable through the collapsed mount path, and no feature flag for disabling volume attachment is identified in the available sources.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Beta9 (beam-cloud) is a serverless GPU platform composed of a gateway and worker nodes, and the flaw is a classic CWE-22 path traversal expressed in the volume-mount plumbing. When a stub (function, endpoint, or task queue) is deployed with an attached volume, the gateway assembles the host-side bind-mount source by joining the shared volumes root, the workspace name, and the volume identifier taken verbatim from the stub configuration. No ownership lookup was performed on that identifier, so an identifier built from parent-directory segments normalizes outside the workspace's own directory and lands on the worker's filesystem root, which is then bind-mounted read-write into the sandbox unless the volume was explicitly marked read-only. The upstream fix (PR #1897, commit a28bf12cf0007c792a25d8ed282b4e8bf6f30393) introduces a ValidateVolume helper that rejects nil volumes, empty identifiers without a bucket config, identifiers equal to '.' or '..' or containing '/', and mount paths containing '..' segments; the gateway additionally resolves the identifier through GetVolumeByExternalId for the requesting workspace and rejects volumes that do not exist or are not owned by it (bucket mounts without a volume record are exempt but still validated). Crucially, validation was also inserted into ConfigureContainerRequestMounts so stub configs persisted before the check existed are re-validated when the mount is actually built on the worker, closing the window for already-saved malicious stubs.

Tenant reaches the gateway over the network with a workspace token (AV:N/PR:L), the '..' payload is trivially crafted (AC:L), and breaking out of the tenant boundary to other tenants' files is a scope change with full C/I/A read-write impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
A Beta9 tenant can attach a volume when deploying a function, endpoint, or task queue. The gateway builds the host path by joining the shared volumes root, the workspace name, and the volume identifier from the stub configuration. Nothing checks that the identifier names a volume that workspace owns. Parent-directory segments in the identifier collapse the joined path to the worker's filesystem root, and the worker bind-mounts that path into the sandbox read-write unless the volume was explicitly marked read-only. A tenant with a workspace token can therefore read and write the worker's files, including other tenants' volumes stored on that machine. Confirmed against gateway 0.1.769 and worker 0.1.745. Fixed in gateway 0.1.776 and worker 0.1.756: volume identifiers and mount paths are validated before a mount is built, including for stubs saved before the check existed, and the gateway rejects a volume that does not exist or is not owned by the workspace.
Executive ViewAI
A critical path traversal vulnerability in the Beta9 gateway and worker (CVE-2026-120308) enables any authenticated tenant to escape their sandbox and gain read-write access to the host filesystem, potentially compromising other tenants' data and the underlying infrastructure. This cross-tenant breach risk could result in data exposure, service disruption, and regulatory non-compliance, requiring immediate remediation to maintain customer trust and operational integrity.
