| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Typemill account with media/image upload capability (PR:L) and a second user who subsequently opens or renders the uploaded SVG (UI). The concrete flaw is in system/typemill/Models/SvgSanitizer.php in versions up to 2.26.0: the sanitizer permitted SVG files containing a DOCTYPE (DTD) declaration and did not strip XML processing instructions and comments, which per the patch can trigger XSLT transformations in browsers, yielding stored cross-site scripting. Limiting factors: exploitation is not possible without login and upload permission, it depends on a victim viewing the malicious SVG, and it only affects deployments running 2.26.0 or earlier; upgrading to 2.27.0 (which rejects DOCTYPE SVGs, loads with LIBXML_NONET, and removes processing-instruction/comment nodes) resolves it. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, not emergency, priority. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N, base 5.1) describes a network-reachable but privilege- and interaction-gated stored XSS: PR:L means the attacker must already hold an authenticated Typemill account able to upload media, and UI:P means a victim must subsequently render the malicious SVG. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (routine patch cycle), not act_now or emergency, which is consistent with those limiting factors. It is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no confirmed active exploitation. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from this data. VulDB states an exploit has been published (E:P in the vector), but the only references are VulDB pages and the vendor patch - a public PoC reference exists; it is not verified as working exploit code. Signals are internally consistent (medium severity, authenticated+interaction-gated, no KEV, moderate decision label) rather than conflicting. Net: a real but bounded issue best handled in the normal monthly patch cycle, not a drop-everything emergency; the main risk is an authenticated low-privilege user escalating against higher-privileged users (e.g. an admin viewing the image) via stored script in the CMS. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Typemill user with media-upload rights uploads a crafted SVG that, prior to 2.27.0, bypasses the SvgSanitizer because DOCTYPE/DTD declarations were permitted and XML processing instructions and comments were not stripped. When another user - for example an administrator browsing the media library or a page embedding the image - renders the SVG, attacker-controlled script executes in that victim's browser. A public PoC reference is cited by VulDB, though it is not verified as working exploit code. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 01, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the Typemill flat-file CMS through 2.26.0 allows an authenticated user with media/image upload rights to upload a crafted SVG that executes script in a victim's browser when the file is later opened or rendered. The sanitizer in system/typemill/Models/SvgSanitizer.php accepted SVG files carrying a DOCTYPE (DTD) declaration and left XML processing instructions and comments in place, which per the patch can trigger XSLT transformations in browsers. A public exploit reference has been published and may be used, but this is a moderate, not emergency, priority requiring login, upload permission and a second user viewing the file; upgrading to 2.27.0 resolves it.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 2.27.0, published at https://github.com/typemill/typemill/releases/tag/v2.27.0 and containing commit 9ca43c4a7b6764c5a6ac11a2ccc099b036ee3cef, is sufficient to resolve the issue; upgrade Typemill from 2.26.0 or earlier to 2.27.0 (or later) using the standard update path and confirm system/typemill/Models/SvgSanitizer.php now rejects DOCTYPE-bearing SVGs, loads XML with LIBXML_NONET, and strips processing instructions and comments. Because the vendor frames upgrading as the sufficient fix and the patch works by tightening sanitizer behavior rather than adding a toggle, no separate configuration-based workaround is documented in the available sources; until the upgrade is applied on affected instances, the practical exposure reducer is restricting media/image upload privileges to trusted accounts, since the flaw requires an authenticated uploader and a viewer who opens the resulting SVG. After upgrading, re-check previously uploaded SVG assets in the media library, as files accepted under 2.26.0 are stored on disk and are not retroactively re-sanitized by the code change.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Typemill is a PHP-based flat-file CMS, and this issue sits in its SVG handling pipeline (CWE-79, cross-site scripting). The affected class SvgSanitizer is invoked from Media.php's storeFile/checkAllowedExtension paths, which previously duplicated loading, sanitizing and re-serializing logic inline; the fix 9ca43c4a7b6764c5a6ac11a2ccc099b036ee3cef consolidates this into a sanitizeSvgFiledata() helper. In the vulnerable versions the sanitizer called loadXML() without flags, did not reject documents containing a DOCTYPE, and did not strip XML processing instructions or comment nodes; the patch adds libxml_use_internal_errors handling with LIBXML_NONET, returns false when xmlDoc->doctype is not null (with a user-facing message that DOCTYPE declarations are disallowed), and adds removeProcessingInstructionsAndComments() to walk the whole document tree and delete XML_PI_NODE and XML_COMMENT_NODE children. Because SVG is XML that browsers can render as active content, retained processing instructions and DTD constructs are the mechanism the patch closes for stored XSS in the media library. The trigger as described is a sanitizer output weakness rather than a memory-safety bug; exploitation depends on an attacker-controlled upload being served back to a viewer.

Authenticated media-upload privilege gives PR:L and victim rendering gives UI:R; stored SVG XSS crosses into the victim's browser (S:C) with limited confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability effect.

2DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw has been found in Typemill up to 2.26.0. The impacted element is the function ControllerApiImage::saveImage of the file system/typemill/Models/SvgSanitizer.php. Executing a manipulation can lead to cross site scripting. The attack may be performed from remote. The exploit has been published and may be used. Upgrading to version 2.27.0 is sufficient to resolve this issue. This patch is called 9ca43c4a7b6764c5a6ac11a2ccc099b036ee3cef. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
