Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target open or demux an attacker-controlled IMF (Interoperable Master Format) package using FFmpeg's IMF demuxer, where the ASSETMAP XML contains Path elements with '..' sequences or absolute paths that are not validated against the package root. The concrete limiting factors are: passive user interaction / ingestion is required (UI:P) - the package must be processed, so there is no fully autonomous remote trigger; impact is restricted to reading file existence and size and to issuing server-side requests (VC:L), with no write/integrity or availability impact; and the affected code path is only reached when the IMF demuxer is actually invoked on the malicious input. Highest real-world exposure is in automated server-side media-ingestion/transcoding services that accept untrusted IMF packages.

Impact

This is a medium-severity information-disclosure/SSRF issue, not an emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L, score 5.3) indicates network reach and low complexity with no privileges, but it is gated by passive user interaction (UI:P) - a victim must process an attacker-supplied IMF package - and the impact is confined to low confidentiality (VC:L) with no integrity or availability effect (VI:N/VA:N) and no scope change (SC:N). No CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score were provided, and no exploit/PoC reference is present in the input, so exploitation appears theoretical at this time; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a real but non-urgent priority. The practical risk is limited to probing local file existence/size and coercing server-side requests (SSRF) - valuable in multi-tenant or server-side media-processing pipelines (e.g., transcoding services that ingest untrusted IMF packages) but far below arbitrary code execution. Treat as a patch-this-cycle issue rather than a drop-everything one.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A server-side media pipeline (or a user) ingests an attacker-crafted IMF package whose ASSETMAP Path elements contain '..' or absolute paths. When FFmpeg's IMF demuxer resolves those paths, it opens files outside the package directory, letting the attacker confirm the existence and size of local files or force the host to issue outbound (server-side) requests. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; the only exploitation gate is getting the target to demux the malicious package.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 31, 2026

Path traversal in FFmpeg 5.0 through 9.0.2's IMF demuxer allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to make the demuxer open files outside an IMF package by embedding '..' or absolute paths in ASSETMAP Path elements, enabling local file existence and size probing plus server-side requests. The attacker must supply a crafted IMF package that the target opens or demuxes (UI:P), so exposure is highest in automated media-ingestion and transcoding services that process untrusted packages. This is a medium-severity information-disclosure/SSRF issue; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream fix referenced in FFmpeg PR 25341 (https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/pulls/25341); a patched release version is not independently confirmed at time of analysis. Until a fixed release is available, restrict processing of untrusted IMF packages or run IMF demuxing in a sandboxed low-privilege process with filesystem access limited to the package directory-trade-off: sandboxing may break legitimate IMF workflows that reference external assets, and rejecting untrusted packages reduces ingestion functionality. Monitor the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/ffmpeg-5.0-through-9.0.2-path-traversal-via-imf-demuxer-assetmap-path) for updated fixed-version information.

Technical ContextAI · show details

FFmpeg's IMF (Interoperable Master Format) demuxer parses ASSETMAP XML to locate MXF essence files; the vulnerable code in libavformat/imfdec.c fails to validate Path elements against the package root (CWE-22). An attacker can include '..' sequences or absolute paths so the demuxer opens local files outside the package, which lets them probe file existence and size and trigger server-side requests. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:ffmpeg:ffmpeg:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* for versions 5.0 through 9.0.2. The independent assessment scores this AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N (CVSS 3.1), confirming network reachability, low complexity, no privileges, required user interaction, and only low confidentiality impact with no integrity or availability effect. The CVE record lists CVSS 4.0 5.3 with VC:L and no VI/VA/SC/SI/SA impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

FFmpeg 5.0 through 9.0.2 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the IMF demuxer that allows attackers to open files outside the package via unvalidated ASSETMAP Path elements. Attackers can supply a crafted IMF package with '..' or absolute paths to demux local MXF files, probe file existence and size, or trigger server-side requests.
