MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated phpMyAdmin victim (through 5.2.3) whose instance uses http or config authentication, who is lured into submitting a cross-site non-AJAX POST carrying a sql_query parameter to /sql or /database/sql; the bypass relies specifically on the pre-patch middleware not rejecting non-AJAX POSTs with a missing/mismatched CSRF token. Limiting factors: victim user interaction is mandatory (UI:P - the admin must visit the attacker's page while logged in), the http/config authentication prerequisite is not the default cookie-auth deployment, and the resulting SQL impact is bounded by the victim account's database privileges. |
| Impact | This is a credible this_week-priority issue rather than an inflated high-CVSS artifact, but its real-world reach is gated by configuration. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) correctly captures a network-reachable CSRF (CWE-352) that needs victim interaction (UI:P) and carries an attack requirement (AT:P) - consistent with the description's statement that it works 'under http or config authentication,' which is not phpMyAdmin's default cookie-auth mode. Full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact on the database is justified because arbitrary SQL runs with the victim's privileges. VulnCheck reported it and vendor patch commits are confirmed, so the technical reality is well-established. However, EPSS is not provided in the input and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no quantitative exploitation-probability signal and no confirmation of active exploitation; the SSVC/decision framework fields beyond the vuln.today 'this_week' label are not supplied. The AT:P attack requirement plus the dependency on a non-default authentication mode and an authenticated, interacting victim meaningfully lowers mass-exploitation likelihood compared to a pure AV:N/PR:N/UI:N flaw, so prioritize patching within the vendor's and decision label's timeframe rather than treating it as an active emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker hosts a web page containing an auto-submitting HTML form that POSTs a sql_query parameter to a target phpMyAdmin's /sql or /database/sql endpoint. When an administrator who is currently authenticated to that phpMyAdmin instance (under http or config authentication) is lured into visiting the page, the non-AJAX POST bypasses the CSRF token check and the injected SQL executes with the victim's full database privileges. A public PoC reference exists (abraxaslabs.tech research writeup and the VulnCheck advisory); it is not verified as working exploit code. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026
Cross-site request forgery in phpMyAdmin through 5.2.3 allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker (CVSS PR:N) to bypass CSRF token validation on non-AJAX POST requests and have arbitrary SQL executed with the database privileges of a logged-in victim. The attacker must lure an authenticated phpMyAdmin user into submitting a cross-site POST carrying a sql_query parameter to /sql or /database/sql, and the instance must be running http or config authentication - the prerequisite configuration plus mandatory victim interaction (UI:P) is what gates the otherwise high-impact confidentiality, integrity and availability ratings. Exploitation status: no CISA KEV entry and no confirmed public exploit code at time of analysis, though a public research write-up of the flaw exists; the issue carries a this_week priority and the underlying bypass is fixed upstream.
RemediationAI
The complete fix is the upstream phpMyAdmin patch delivered through pull request https://github.com/phpmyadmin/phpmyadmin/pull/20569, comprising commits https://github.com/phpmyadmin/phpmyadmin/commit/d1e2b54b530685c24dd91181b9f64a5a64621789 and https://github.com/phpmyadmin/phpmyadmin/commit/910322373f14ed4601c85234858f630f127569ef - the vendor states a patch is available, but the provided data does not name a tagged release version, so confirm the containing release on the phpMyAdmin security advisories page before upgrading rather than assuming a version number; the fix makes the token middleware reject any non-AJAX POST with a missing or mismatched token by discarding the request body, query and cookie parameters and routing the request to the home page. Because a patched release version is not independently confirmed from this data, operators who cannot deploy immediately should treat the configuration prerequisite as the primary exposure control: phpMyAdmin instances running http or config authentication are the affected population, so moving such instances to cookie-based authentication removes the demonstrated delivery path, at the cost of losing the single-sign-on/automation convenience that motivated http or config auth in the first place, and this must be validated against any embedded or scripted clients. Additionally, keeping the MySQL accounts used by phpMyAdmin users at least privilege limits the blast radius of any successfully forged sql_query, since the injected SQL executes with the victim's own database grants, and users should be advised not to browse untrusted pages while logged into the interface. Updating remains the only complete remediation per the vendor; the configuration changes above are compensating measures, not substitutes.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a classic CWE-352 origin-validation failure inside phpMyAdmin's PSR-7 middleware layer. TokenRequestParamChecking::process() previously short-circuited only AJAX requests when the CSRF token was missing or mismatched (returning a JSON 'Error: Token mismatch' response); for ordinary non-AJAX POSTs it merely emptied the PHP superglobals ($_REQUEST, $_POST, $_GET, $_COOKIE) and returned null, leaving the PSR-7 request object's parsed body and query/cookie params intact so that downstream controllers - including the SQL execution endpoints reached via the sql_query parameter - could still act on attacker-supplied input. The upstream fix (pull request #20569, commits d1e2b54b and 910322373f) converts checkTokenRequestParam() from returning a ResponseInterface|null to a boolean, and on a false result the middleware now clears the superglobals, rebuilds the request with empty parsed body, query params and cookie params, and rewrites the route attribute to '/', so no controller ever processes a request that may originate from another site. Unit tests added with the fix assert exactly this: POSTs to routes such as /database/structure/add-prefix-table with no token are stripped and redirected to the home route. Affected deployments are those using http or config authentication, where the attacker does not need to defeat a browser-bound session cookie flow; the SQL that runs is bounded by the victim account's database grants.

DescriptionCVE.org
phpMyAdmin through 5.2.3 contains a cross-site request forgery vulnerability that allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL by bypassing CSRF token checks on non-AJAX POST requests. Attackers can lure authenticated victims into submitting cross-site POSTs carrying sql_query to /sql or /database/sql, running SQL with the victim's database privileges under http or config authentication.
Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-119426 in phpMyAdmin (up to 5.2.3) enables an authenticated user to be tricked into executing arbitrary SQL on their database with their own privileges, severely threatening data confidentiality, integrity, and availability. While exploitation requires victim interaction and specific authentication configurations, the high potential impact means leadership should prioritize patching and verify that phpMyAdmin is not exposed with weak authentication modes.
