MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Defense Evasion The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The target application must use Assent's Sign in with Apple strategy (Assent.Strategy.Apple) at a version from 0.1.25 up to but not including 0.3.2, AND must rely on the returned Apple |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk case. The input CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N, score 9.3) is internally consistent with the mechanism described: a network-reachable, low-complexity authentication-bypass where the attacker needs no pre-existing privileges on the target and no victim interaction, yielding high confidentiality and integrity impact through account impersonation (availability is correctly N). The vuln.today decision label is act_now and a vendor patch is available, reinforcing urgency. Key caveats: this is NOT listed in CISA KEV and no EPSS score was provided, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or a modeled exploitation probability - the urgency rests on the act_now decision label, the trivial and well-documented attack technique, and the severity of the impact rather than on confirmed in-the-wild use. The input references include the fixing commits and a GHSA advisory but do NOT state that working public exploit code exists, so exploitation capability should be treated as easily reproducible from the public advisory rather than as a confirmed packaged exploit. One nuance limiting blast radius: impact is conditional on how the consuming application uses the returned identity - only apps that look up, link, or authorize accounts by the Apple sub or email are actually exploitable. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 31, 2026
Account impersonation in pow-auth Assent's Sign in with Apple strategy (versions 0.1.25 through 0.3.1) allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to override verified ID token claims with a client-controlled callback parameter. An attacker who completes a genuine Sign in with Apple login using their own Apple ID can edit the user form parameter so that sub, email, and other claims are replaced; applications that use those values for account lookup, linking, verification, or access control then act on the attacker's identity. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and a vendor patch is available in version 0.3.2.
RemediationAI
Upgrade pow-auth Assent to version 0.3.2, which ignores the callback's user parameter by default; when the feature is explicitly enabled, only unverified name fields are included and they cannot override verified identity claims. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply the vendor-documented workaround before calling the strategy: delete the user parameter from the callback parameters, for example params |> Map.delete("user") |> Assent.Strategy.Apple.callback(config). The trade-off is that removing the parameter also drops Apple's first-login name/profile data; the advisory notes that version 0.3.2 handles this by ignoring the parameter by default and restricting any explicitly enabled use to non-identity name fields. Details are in the vendor advisory at https://github.com/pow-auth/assent/security/advisories/GHSA-9fr5-g44g-9526.

Technical ContextAI · show details
This is an authentication bypass by spoofing (CWE-290) that also matches CWE-349, acceptance of extraneous untrusted data with trusted data. In the OpenID Connect / Sign in with Apple flow implemented by Assent.Strategy.Apple, Apple posts a user form parameter to the callback endpoint; that parameter is browser-submitted and client-controlled, and is intended to carry profile data such as the user's name. In vulnerable versions, Assent.Strategy.Apple.callback/2 decodes the parameter and fetch_user/2 merges it over the claims of the verified ID token, so the unverified map wins. The advisory notes that the merge order lets the callback's user values override sub and email. Exploitation requires the attacker to complete a valid Sign in with Apple login with their own Apple ID, and the impact depends on the downstream application keying identity or authorization decisions off the returned Apple subject or email.

Remote, no auth and no user interaction needed since the attacker controls the callback parameter after their own login; impersonation yields high confidentiality and integrity impact, no availability effect.

DescriptionCVE.org
Acceptance of Extraneous Untrusted Data With Trusted Data vulnerability in the Sign in with Apple strategy in pow-auth Assent allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to impersonate another user via the user parameter of the authorization callback.
Apple posts the user's name to the callback endpoint in a user form parameter that the browser submits and the client controls. Assent.Strategy.Apple.callback/2 in lib/assent/strategies/apple.ex decodes that parameter, and fetch_user/2 merges it over the claims of the verified ID token, so the unverified map wins. An attacker who completes a Sign in with Apple login with their own Apple ID and edits the user parameter can replace sub, email, and any other claim. Applications that look up, link, or authorize accounts by the returned subject or email then act on the attacker's values.
This issue affects assent: from 0.1.25 before 0.3.2.

Executive ViewAI
A critical account impersonation vulnerability in pow-auth Assent's Sign in with Apple strategy could allow attackers to hijack user accounts, potentially gaining unauthorized access to sensitive systems and data. This affects all organizations using the impacted versions of this authentication library, posing a severe risk to identity integrity and access control. Leadership should prioritize remediation to prevent account takeovers and protect customer trust.
