| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the bundled structure/history plugin is installed AND activated - it is not enabled by default, which is the primary limiting factor and narrows the exposed population. The attacker must also know or enumerate a valid backend login name, but the advisory notes 'admin' is a common default and names are enumerable, so this is a weak barrier and the issue should be treated as exploitable without prior account knowledge. The authentication bypass itself needs no valid session or prior access (PR:N confirmed by the CVSS vector). The escalation to remote code execution additionally requires that the instance is NOT running in live mode, because live mode disables the template/module/action editing and package-management functions used to introduce PHP; in live mode the backend session compromise still occurs but the RCE pivot does not apply. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not an inflated high-CVSS artifact. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N with VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) describes an unauthenticated, network-reachable, low-complexity authentication bypass yielding full compromise of the affected system, and the vendor advisory corroborates the mechanism: the session-tied secret can be forced into a predictable state without authenticating, after which a temporary login token for any known account (e.g. admin) can be forged. The vuln.today decision label is act_now, which aligns with the CVSS severity and the vendor's own description of unauthenticated admin takeover. Two signals temper the raw score, and they should be stated explicitly: (1) exploitation is gated on a non-default condition - only installations with the structure/history plugin installed AND activated are affected - so the real-world exposed population is a subset of REDAXO deployments; and (2) the RCE pivot applies only when the instance is NOT running in live mode, because live mode disables the template/module/add-on editing paths. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified here. This is NOT in CISA KEV and no confirmed working exploit code is present in the inputs (only vendor/NVD advisories), so there is no evidence of active exploitation yet - but the low attack complexity, unauthenticated reach, weak admin-enumeration precondition, and act_now label make prompt patching appropriate. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker reaches the frontend of a REDAXO site that has the structure/history plugin activated, forces the session-tied secret into a known predictable state, and forges a temporary login token for the 'admin' account using only attacker-controlled inputs. This grants a backend administrator session; on an instance not running in live mode the attacker then introduces executable PHP via templates, modules, actions, or an add-on install to achieve server-side code execution. No confirmed public exploit code is present in the supplied data (references are vendor and NVD advisories only), and the low complexity of the forgery makes the chain practical. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Unauthenticated attackers can force the temporary-login secret in REDAXO core's bundled structure/history plugin (5.3.0 through 5.21.3) into a predictable state and then forge a login token that yields a backend session for any existing account, including an administrator. On installations that are not running in live mode, that backend access escalates to remote code execution via PHP introduced through templates, modules, actions or add-on installation; in live mode the bypass and backend compromise still occur but the RCE pivot does not apply. Exposure is limited to installations where the structure/history plugin is installed and activated, since it is not enabled by default, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; the vendor fixed the flaw in 5.21.4.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade redaxo/core to 5.21.4 (Composer: composer/redaxo/source 5.21.4), which re-binds the temporary login to one of the user's active sessions via a server-side verified keyed HMAC and destroys the temporary session at the end of the request. See the vendor advisory at https://github.com/redaxo/core/security/advisories/GHSA-px8f-whj8-hrpq. If updating immediately is not possible, deactivate the structure/history plugin, which removes the attack surface entirely at the cost of the frontend history-viewing feature. If you depend on that feature, apply the vendor-documented one-line change to redaxo/src/addons/structure/plugins/history/boot.php line 16, replacing the call that reads the rex_history_session request parameter with an empty string assignment; history snapshots continue to be recorded, but the temporary frontend login used to view past versions is disabled. Because the RCE pivot depends on administrative editing and package-management functions that live mode disables, running the installation in live mode removes the code-execution escalation but does not mitigate the authentication bypass or the resulting backend session compromise.

Technical ContextAI · show details
REDAXO's bundled structure/history plugin implements a temporary frontend login so users can view past article versions. The authorizing token is derived from three inputs: the login name, a validity timestamp, and a server-side secret that is tied to the user's session. The vulnerability is that this session-tied secret could be driven into a known, predictable state without any prior authentication - once that is done, the token depends only on attacker-controlled values (login name and timestamp) and can be computed offline, so no valid session or prior access is required (consistent with PR:N in the assessed vector). The root cause is classed as CWE-287 (improper authentication), with the advisory additionally tagging CWE-345 (insufficient verification of data authenticity) and CWE-807 (reliance on untrusted inputs in a security decision) - the server accepts a token whose authenticity it never properly binds to a real user session. Knowing a valid backend login name is a weak precondition because 'admin' is a common default and login names are enumerable, so the issue should be treated as exploitable without prior account knowledge. The fix in 5.21.4 binds the temporary login to one of the user's actual active sessions using a keyed HMAC verified server-side, and always destroys the temporary session at the end of the request.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
REDAXO core from 5.3.0 before 5.21.4 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in the structure/history plugin that allows unauthenticated attackers to forge temporary login tokens. Attackers can force the session-tied secret into a predictable state and forge tokens for accounts like admin, gaining backend access and code execution outside live mode.
Technical POC Analysis
The defect is an authentication/authorization bypass in REDAXO core's bundled structure/history plugin, primary CWE-287 Improper Authentication, with secondary CWE-345 and CWE-807 in the advisory.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
A critical vulnerability in REDAXO's structure/history plugin allows unauthenticated attackers to forge admin sessions, with potential for remote code execution in non-live environments. Only installations with this optional plugin enabled are affected, but those installations face total compromise of backend access and possible server takeover.
