| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the victim is currently authenticated as a REDAXO backend administrator and actively opens the attacker's crafted link/page (UI:A), and that the installation is NOT in live mode - the advisory states safe mode cannot be toggled at all in live mode. The flaw is reachable because the safemode parameter is accepted as a plain GET without CSRF-token validation, and the default SameSite=Lax session cookie permits cross-site top-level GET navigations to carry the session. Limiting factors: the hard requirement for an active, logged-in admin victim plus social-engineering interaction, the live-mode exclusion, and the bounded effect (toggling safe mode / disabling backend addons or rewriting safe_mode:false in config.yml) with no confidentiality loss and no privilege gain. Fixed versions (5.21.5) only process safemode with a valid CSRF token. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely medium-severity, lower-priority issue rather than an urgent one. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.1 (Medium), with AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N but critically UI:A - the attack is network-reachable and low-complexity, yet it cannot fire without an authenticated administrator actively opening an attacker-controlled link. Impact is bounded: VC:N (no confidentiality loss) with only VI:L and VA:L reflecting the limited integrity/availability effect of toggling safe mode or disabling backend addons; the advisory explicitly states the attacker gains no privileges and no code execution. No EPSS score and no KEV listing are present in the input, so there is no signal of active exploitation; this is not CISA KEV. The references are two vendor/coordinator advisories (GitHub GHSA and VulnCheck), not working exploit code, so there is no confirmed public PoC exploit. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a patch-promptly-but-not-emergency posture. Net: a real but modest CSRF with a hard precondition (admin must be logged in and tricked, and the install must not be in live mode), appropriately rated medium - prioritize patching in a normal cycle, not as an incident. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a web page or email link pointing to the REDAXO backend index.php with the safemode GET parameter and entices a currently-logged-in administrator to open it; because the action is a plain GET processed without a CSRF token and the session cookie is SameSite=Lax, the top-level navigation silently toggles safe mode. Setting safemode=0 can revert a deliberately-enabled global safe mode (writing safe_mode: false to config.yml), while safemode=1 disables all non-setup backend addons for that session. No confirmed working public exploit code is identified; only vendor/coordinator advisories exist. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Cross-site request forgery in REDAXO CMS core 5.21.4 and earlier allows an attacker to flip the global safe-mode setting by convincing a logged-in backend administrator to open a crafted link. Because index.php processes the safemode GET parameter without a CSRF token, the request writes safe_mode: false into config.yml when global safe mode was enabled, or activates session safe mode that disables all backend addons except backup, be_style and install for that session. Confidentiality and privileges are unaffected, exploitation requires an authenticated administrator victim plus user interaction and a non-live installation, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; the issue is rated medium severity and prioritised as this_month rather than urgent.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade REDAXO core to 5.21.5, which processes the safemode parameter only when a valid CSRF token is present, for activating as well as deactivating, and updates the backend links in system settings, the deactivation button and the error page's 'activate safe mode' link to carry that token; the advisory is at https://github.com/redaxo/core/security/advisories/GHSA-423v-8x3h-gxr3. Administrators who cannot update immediately should note that the advisory identifies live mode as the state in which safe mode cannot be toggled at all, so running the installation in live mode removes the reachable state change, and they should avoid following unsolicited links while logged into the backend, since the attack depends entirely on an authenticated administrator opening the crafted link or page. Be aware that enabling safe mode globally via safe_mode: true in config.yml does not by itself block this attack, because the flaw can rewrite that value to false; no vendor workaround beyond updating to 5.21.5 is described in the available sources.

Technical ContextAI · show details
REDAXO is a PHP-based content management system whose backend toggles safe mode through the safemode request parameter (index.php?safemode=1 to activate, safemode=0 to deactivate). This is CWE-352: the parameter was handled for any logged-in administrator without validating a CSRF token, and because the state change is reachable via a plain GET, cross-site top-level navigations still carry the session cookie under the default SameSite=Lax policy. The consequences are state-manipulation rather than code execution: deactivating globally enabled safe mode rewrites safe_mode: false into config.yml, silently reverting an isolation setting administrators use to contain a broken or misbehaving addon, while activating safe mode suppresses all addons except the setup addons (backup, be_style, install) in the backend for the victim's session, leaving the frontend untouched. The trigger is documented as the GET parameter being processed without token validation; the advisory explicitly notes that the flaw is not exploitable when the installation is in live mode, where safe mode cannot be toggled at all. The fix in 5.21.5 requires a valid CSRF token for both activation and deactivation, with the backend links (system settings, deactivation button, and the 'activate safe mode' link on the error page) updated to include the token.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
REDAXO before 5.21.5 contains a cross-site request forgery vulnerability because the backend processes the safemode GET parameter in index.php without validating a CSRF token. Attackers can lure a logged-in administrator into opening a crafted link to disable global safe mode, writing safe_mode: false to config.yml, or enable session safe mode, disabling backend addons.
