| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid, authenticated client that is restricted to a project but holds can_create_storage_volumes permission in at least one project on the Incus server (PR:L). The attacker must send a crafted POST to /1.0/storage-pools/{pool}/volumes/custom that supplies a source volume with an attacker-chosen source.project while omitting source.type, which routes the request to the copy code path without the source-volume can_view check. Key limiting factors: the attacker needs legitimate low-privilege credentials with volume-create rights; the condition is NOT reachable through the official Incus client (which always sets source.type=copy), so a raw/hand-crafted API request is required; and impact is only meaningful on servers hosting multiple projects where project isolation is the security boundary. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/SC:H, base 8.3 High) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity authorization bypass requiring only low privileges - specifically an already-authenticated, project-restricted client that can create custom volumes. The confidentiality impact is high on both the vulnerable system (VC:H) and a subsequent system (SC:H), reflecting that the flaw breaks project isolation and lets a tenant read data belonging to other projects. No CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score were supplied, and no public exploit code was identified, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; the vuln.today priority is 'this_week' rather than act_now/emergency. The real-world weight of this issue is therefore concentrated in multi-tenant / multi-project Incus deployments where project restriction is the trust boundary - in such environments this is a genuine priority because it defeats the isolation control directly and needs only valid low-privilege credentials, whereas single-tenant or single-project deployments face materially lower exposure. One data point to verify: the Description states fixed versions 7.0.2 and 7.5.0 across two branches, while the GitHub advisory's package metadata lists only 'fixed in >= v7.5.0' - confirm whether a 7.0.2 backport fix exists for the 7.0.x branch before relying on it. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A tenant who legitimately holds permission to create custom volumes in their own project sends a crafted POST to the custom-volumes API that names a source volume but omits source.type and sets source.project to a victim project. Because the source-volume access (can_view) check lives only in the explicit 'copy' arm of the type switch, the empty-type request reaches the copy helper unchecked, copying the victim's volume, snapshots, and configuration into the attacker's project where their contents can be read. No public exploit code was identified, but the official client cannot trigger this (it always sets source.type=copy), so a raw/crafted API request is required. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Project isolation bypass in Incus lets an authenticated client that is confined to one project copy and read custom storage volumes belonging to any other project on the same server, including volume snapshots and configuration. The flaw affects Incus 7.0.1 (fixed in 7.0.2) and 7.2.0 through 7.4.x (fixed in 7.5.0), and is reachable only through a hand-crafted POST to /1.0/storage-pools/{pool}/volumes/custom that supplies a source volume with an attacker-chosen source.project while omitting source.type - the official Incus client always sets source.type=copy and therefore cannot trigger it. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires legitimate low-privilege credentials holding can_create_storage_volumes in at least one project, so impact is concentrated on multi-project servers where project isolation is the actual security boundary.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a patched release on your branch: Incus 7.0.2 fixes the 7.0.x line and Incus 7.5.0 fixes the 7.2.0-and-later line; both carry the advisory GHSA-jh4v-j34r-2mgh at https://github.com/lxc/incus/security/advisories/GHSA-jh4v-j34r-2mgh. No fixed version is listed for releases between 7.0.1 and 7.2.0 other than moving to 7.0.2 or 7.5.0, so align with the nearest supported patched branch. Because the request is not producible by the official client and depends entirely on the attacker holding can_create_storage_volumes in some project, a compensating control is to audit and temporarily withhold that permission from project-restricted, untrusted clients until patching completes, with the trade-off that those clients lose the ability to create custom storage volumes; operators should also keep untrusted tenants out of projects that share an Incus server with sensitive projects, since the isolated impact here is read-only disclosure of other projects' volume data, snapshots and configuration.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Incus is an open-source system container and virtual machine manager that exposes a REST API served by the incusd daemon (Go package github.com/lxc/incus/v7/cmd/incusd). Every API request is subject to project-scoped authorization: a client restricted to project A should not be able to reach resources in project B. The custom volume creation endpoint POST /1.0/storage-pools/{pool}/volumes/custom performs only a can_create_storage_volumes check against the target project, and the source-volume had to be separately authorized with a can_view check. That check, introduced to address CVE-2026-55621, was placed inside the case arm handling source.type == "copy". A request that omits source.type entirely falls into the empty-type arm, which invokes the same copy helper without the can_view check, while still honouring the caller-controlled source.project value. The result is an authorization bypass rooted in CWE-284 (Improper Access Control) - the copy path is reachable and functional but skips the access-control gate that the intended copy path enforces. Because the official client always populates source.type, the vulnerable branch is only reachable by direct API interaction, which is why the flaw reads as a bypass rather than a normal feature misuse.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Incus 7.0.1 before 7.0.2 and 7.2.0 before 7.5.0 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability that allows project-restricted clients to copy volumes by omitting source.type. Attackers can send crafted POST requests to the custom volumes endpoint with a chosen source.project to copy and read other projects' volumes, snapshots, and configuration.
Technical POC Analysis
CWE-284 (Improper Access Control), specifically a project-isolation authorization bypass in the Incus daemon (cmd/incusd, Go module github.com/lxc/incus/v7/cmd/incusd).
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
Incus version 7.0.1 and 7.2.0 through 7.4.x contain a high-severity project isolation bypass that allows an authenticated user with low privileges to access and copy custom storage volumes from other projects on the same server. This undermines the multi-project security model, potentially exposing sensitive data across organizational boundaries, and affects any Incus deployment where projects are used to separate teams or customers. Leadership should prioritize remediation because the flaw directly compromises the isolation boundary that many organizations rely on for multi-tenancy and data segregation.
Vendor-released patch: 7.0.2 and 7.5.0. If patching is delayed, restrict API access to trusted networks, disable can_create_storage_volumes for untrusted projects, and monitor for crafted POST requests to /1.0/storage-pools/*/volumes/custom.
