| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the Include directive plugin to be explicitly enabled via mistune's plugins parameter - this is not a default configuration - and the application must parse attacker-influenced markdown. For the path traversal, the attacker supplies ../ sequences in an include path within that markdown to escape the intended source directory and read arbitrary files relative to it. For the XSS, the output must be rendered in a victim's browser, and the issue persists even when escape=True because error messages and included file contents are emitted without HTML escaping. The primary limiting factor is the non-default plugin requirement; where the Include plugin is not enabled, the application is not exposed. |
| Impact | The input CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H, score 8.7) rates this network-reachable, low-complexity, and requiring no privileges or user interaction, with high confidentiality impact only. This aligns with the path traversal primitive (arbitrary file read via ../ sequences). However, two signals qualify the raw score. First, the GHSA advisory confirms the Include plugin must be explicitly enabled via the plugins parameter - it is NOT a default configuration - so the network/no-privilege profile only materializes where an application both enables that plugin AND parses attacker-controlled markdown. Second, the provided vector marks VI:N despite the description clearly documenting XSS (HTML injection even when escape=True), so the vector arguably understates integrity impact. No EPSS score was provided (missing, not low), the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and the references are vendor/coordinator advisories rather than confirmed working exploit code; therefore this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a serious but not emergency-level priority. Net: a genuine high-severity library flaw whose real-world exploitability is gated by a non-default plugin configuration and attacker-controlled input, rather than a flaw affecting every mistune deployment. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An application uses mistune (<= 3.2.0) with the Include directive plugin explicitly enabled to render user-submitted or externally-sourced markdown. An attacker submits markdown containing an Include directive with ../ sequences, causing the parser to resolve a path outside the intended source directory and return the contents of an arbitrary file (e.g. configuration or credential files); the attacker can alternatively inject HTML through unescaped error messages or included file content to achieve XSS in a viewer's browser. No public working exploit code is identified at time of analysis, only coordinator advisories. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Path traversal and cross-site scripting in Mistune through 3.2.0 allow unauthenticated remote attackers to read files outside the intended source directory and inject HTML/script into rendered output when the optional Include directive plugin is enabled and untrusted markdown is processed. The flaw is not reachable in default configurations because the Include plugin must be explicitly added via the plugins parameter; where enabled, ../ sequences in include paths escape the source directory, and error messages and included file contents are emitted without HTML escaping even with escape=True. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the vendor-released fix is Mistune 3.3.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Mistune 3.3.0 (Vendor-released patch: 3.3.0), which corrects the Include directive path validation and the unescaped error and include-content rendering. If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable the Include directive by omitting it from the plugins parameter; because the plugin is non-default, applications that do not enable it are not exposed, though this removes include functionality. Do not rely on escape=True as a workaround, since the XSS persists through error messages and included file contents; avoid rendering attacker-controlled markdown while the Include plugin is enabled. Technical ContextAI · show details
Mistune is a Python markdown parser; its Include directive is an optional plugin implemented in src/mistune/directives/include.py that resolves include paths and embeds file contents during rendering. The CWE-22 root cause is that path resolution at lines 27-31 does not verify the resolved path remains inside the source directory, so an include path containing ../ can traverse upward and read files outside that directory. The same plugin also renders error output through block_error() in html.py (line 140) and included content through render_html_include() (line 72) without HTML escaping, producing cross-site scripting even when the parser is configured with escape=True. Exposure requires the Include plugin to be explicitly enabled via the plugins parameter and the application to parse attacker-influenced markdown; without that non-default configuration, the vulnerable code paths are not active.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Mistune before 3.3.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the Include directive that allows attackers to read arbitrary files by supplying ../ sequences in include paths. Attackers can also inject HTML through unescaped error messages and included file contents to perform cross-site scripting even when escape=True is set.

Executive ViewAI
A high-severity vulnerability in the Mistune markdown parser (through version 3.2.0) could allow unauthenticated attackers to read sensitive files and inject malicious scripts into rendered content, but only when the optional Include plugin is explicitly enabled. Organizations using Mistune with this non-default configuration face potential data exposure and cross-site scripting risks that could compromise user sessions or leak confidential information. Leadership should prioritize identifying affected applications and applying the vendor's fix to prevent exploitation.
Apply vendor patch.
