MITRE ATT&CK

| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires three concrete conditions, all confirmed by the GHSA advisory: (1) the application must enable the RST Include directive via RSTDirective([Include()]) in its mistune plugin list - this is NOT a default configuration; (2) the integration must set state.env['__file__'] to a filesystem path, which is the documented setup for rendering on-disk markdown and resolving relative includes; and (3) the attacker must be able to supply markdown that this renderer processes. Given those, no authentication or user interaction is needed (vector is PR:N/UI:N) and both '../' relative traversal and absolute paths like '/etc/passwd' work. Files readable are limited to those accessible to the renderer process (e.g. /etc/passwd, /proc/self/environ, the app's .env, ~/.aws/credentials). A second, conditional mode applies only when the application also sets escape=False and the attacker can place a '.html' file, yielding stored XSS. The principal LIMITING factor is that the Include directive is opt-in: deployments that do not enable it, or do not set __file__, are not exploitable. |
| Impact | Signals mostly align toward high priority but with one important caveat. CVSS 4.0 is 9.2 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N, VC:H and subsequent-system SC:H), and the vuln.today decision label is act_now, indicating this should be treated as urgent. A working proof-of-concept is published inside the GHSA advisory itself (author-verified against mistune 3.2.1 with ../../../etc/passwd and /etc/passwd payloads), so exploitation is trivial where applicable. Countervailing signals: there is no CISA KEV listing (no confirmed active exploitation) and no EPSS score was supplied, so widespread opportunistic exploitation is not evidenced - treat urgency as driven by ease-of-exploit and PoC availability rather than observed in-the-wild activity. The most important nuance the raw CVSS hides: PR:N/UI:N is accurate only once the application has opted into the non-default RST Include directive and set state.env['__file__']. The base vector does not encode that deployment precondition, so the 9.2 overstates universal risk - for apps that enable the Include plugin it is a trivially exploitable unauthenticated arbitrary-file-read, but apps that never enable it are not exposed. This is a genuine priority for the affected configuration, not a paper high-CVSS issue, but exposure must be confirmed per deployment. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An application renders user-submitted markdown with the RST Include directive enabled and __file__ set to the source path. An attacker submits markdown containing '.. include:: ../../../etc/passwd' (or an absolute path such as '/etc/passwd', which os.path.join resolves verbatim), and the renderer reads the file and embeds its contents in the returned HTML, leaking credentials, .env secrets, or /proc/self/environ. A verified PoC demonstrating both the relative-traversal and absolute-path bypass is published in the GHSA advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Arbitrary file read in Mistune's RST .. include:: directive affects versions before 3.3.0: unauthenticated attackers able to submit markdown to a renderer with the Include plugin enabled can embed any file the rendering process can open - /etc/passwd, /proc/self/environ, an application's .env, ~/.aws/credentials - into the rendered HTML via ../ traversal or an absolute path. The directive is opt-in: only integrations that register RSTDirective([Include()]) and set state.env['__file__'] are exposed, while default Mistune deployments and renderers that never set __file__ are not affected. The GHSA advisory includes a proof-of-concept verified against mistune 3.2.1, and the flaw is fixed in 3.3.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to mistune 3.3.0, the version in which the traversal is fixed, and re-test any integration that relies on .. include:: directives. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective control is to stop enabling the directive for content you do not fully trust: remove RSTDirective([Include()]) from the plugin list, or avoid setting state.env['__file__'] for attacker-influenced markdown - without __file__ the plugin returns a block_error and performs no read, at the cost of losing relative-include functionality for legitimate documentation trees. Where the directive must stay enabled, apply the advisory's containment patch (resolve base and dest with os.path.realpath and reject the include when os.path.isabs(relpath) or os.path.commonpath([base, dest]) != base), which blocks .. traversal, absolute paths and symlink-following escapes while preserving sibling-file includes. Separately, consider the advisory's defense-in-depth option of removing the .html/.xhtml/.htm inclusion branch or always escaping included HTML, since combined with escape=False that branch yields stored XSS; this is a behavioural change for any corpus that intentionally embeds HTML. Details and the upstream diff are in GHSA-9jjx-3hq3-hx4j.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is a CWE-22 (and CWE-73) path traversal in src/mistune/directives/include.py (lines 28-46). The directive argument is taken verbatim from the markdown source via parse_title(), then joined to the source file's directory with os.path.join and normalised with os.path.normpath. This is the classic traversal anti-pattern: os.path.join(base, '/etc/passwd') discards the base because the second component is absolute, and normpath collapses .. segments without ever checking that the resolved path stays inside a base directory. The only guards present are a self-include rejection and an os.path.isfile() existence check, both of which pass for /etc/passwd, /proc/self/environ, the application's .env or ~/.aws/credentials. Included content is parsed as markdown for .md/.markdown/.mkd, emitted as raw block_html for .html/.xhtml/.htm, or wrapped in <pre class="directive-include"> otherwise. When the host application also renders with escape=False, the HTML branch turns the read primitive into stored XSS. The advisory's suggested fix resolves real paths and enforces containment with os.path.commonpath([base, dest]) == base (rejecting absolute and escaping paths, including symlink escapes), optionally dropping or always escaping the HTML inclusion branch. The assessed vector scores this as confidentiality-only with a scope change (S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N), reflecting data exposure across the renderer's process boundary; exploitation hinges entirely on the opt-in Include directive and a configured __file__.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Mistune before 3.3.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the RST include directive that allows attackers to read arbitrary files by supplying relative or absolute paths. Attackers can submit markdown containing include directives referencing ../ sequences or absolute paths to embed sensitive files like credentials or environment data in rendered HTML.

Technical POC Analysis
CWE-22 path traversal in src/mistune/directives/include.py, Include.parse, in mistune versions <= 3.2.1.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
A critical vulnerability in Mistune, a widely-used Markdown rendering library, could allow unauthenticated attackers to read sensitive files from servers where certain optional features are enabled. This impacts only applications that have specifically configured the RST include directive; all other deployments are not at risk. If exploited, attackers could access credentials and system files, leading to data breaches and further compromise.
Apply vendor patch.
