| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target to use Roundcube Webmail (before 1.6.20, or 1.7.x before 1.7.5) with HTML message rendering enabled, which is the default. The attacker must be able to deliver an HTML email to the victim, and the specific trigger is an at-rule prologue such as '@layer a;' (or a selector beginning with '::') placed before CSS selectors so rcube_utils::mod_css_styles() fails to scope them to the message container. The primary limiting factor is that the victim must actually open/view the malicious HTML message, and impact is confined to visual UI redressing and spoofing - there is no direct code execution, data theft, or privilege change, so realized harm depends on the victim being socially engineered by the spoofed interface. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, bounded-impact issue rather than a top-priority emergency. The input CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N scores 6.5 (Medium) and models low-complexity, unauthenticated, network-delivered exploitation with low confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact. The vulnerability is a CSS scoping bypass enabling UI redressing/spoofing - it does not yield code execution, data exfiltration, or account takeover on its own, consistent with CWE-669 (incorporation of functionality from an untrusted control sphere). I disagree with the input UI:N: realistically the victim must open/view the malicious HTML message for the injected CSS to render against the application chrome, so an independent assessment should use UI:R (passive). No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit code referenced, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Signals are largely consistent (low-complexity network vector, but impact confined to spoofing); the main conflict is the CVSS claiming UI:N while the attack inherently requires the victim to open an email - verify interaction requirement against the vendor advisory. Net: patch on a normal cadence, but this is not a widespread drive-by compromise risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends a crafted HTML email to a Roundcube user containing CSS that uses an at-rule prologue (e.g. '@layer a;') or a selector beginning with '::' so that following selectors escape the message-body container and restyle the whole Roundcube interface. When the victim opens the message, the injected styles rewrite application chrome - hiding, moving, or overlaying UI elements - to spoof dialogs or trick the user into revealing information or taking unintended actions. No public exploit code is referenced, but the upstream fix commit and test cases publicly demonstrate the exact bypass payloads. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
UI redressing and interface spoofing in Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 allow a remote unauthenticated attacker to deliver an HTML email whose CSS escapes the message-body scope and restyles application chrome. The victim must open the malicious message, and the realized impact is limited to visual deception rather than code execution, data theft, or privilege change. Vendor-released patches are available in 1.6.20 and 1.7.5; no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 or 1.7.5, which contain the vendor fix; see the advisory at https://roundcube.net/news/2026/10/19/security-updates-1.6.20-and-1.7.5 and the relevant commits 95b81ae12e2819a9b7e8636b5859b6244cda383e and ff9cf4a9bf3b7c66db9afe43fe5f1cc73b47ed35. If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable or restrict HTML message rendering for untrusted mail and prefer plain-text display; this removes the CSS vector but degrades message formatting and may not be a global switch in every deployment. As defense-in-depth, strip or block at-rule constructs such as @layer prologues from inbound HTML email, though this is not a substitute for the patch.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roundcube sanitizes HTML email CSS with rcube_utils::mod_css_styles(), which prefixes selectors with a container ID such as #rcmbody so message styles cannot affect the webmail interface. The vulnerable regex only recognized selector boundaries at the start of input, after commas, and around braces; it did not treat an at-rule prologue like '@layer a;' as a boundary and did not handle selectors beginning with '::'. Consequently, selectors following such constructs were left unscoped and applied globally to the Roundcube UI. This is a containment failure between untrusted message content and application chrome, consistent with CWE-669 (incorrect resource transfer between spheres). The upstream fix adds at-rule prologue boundaries to the regex and supports selectors beginning with '::', with tests covering @layer, nested @media/@layer, and ::before cases.

DescriptionCVE.org
Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 is affected by a CSS scoping bypass in HTML messages. rcube_utils::mod_css_styles() did not treat an at-rule prologue such as @layer a; as a selector boundary, and did not handle selectors beginning with ::, so selectors following an at-rule were left unscoped and applied to the whole Roundcube interface instead of being confined to the message body. This allows an HTML message to restyle application chrome for UI redressing and spoofing. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix CSS scoping bypass in HTML messages using at-rules”.
