| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an application built on the MongoDB C Driver (versions 1.8.0 up to before 3.13.0) that serializes GeoJSON objects containing extra members AND routes user-supplied field names into those extra members. The supplied name must collide with a reserved GeoJSON member such as 'type' or 'coordinates'; absent this specific usage pattern the flaw is not reachable. PR:L reflects that the attacker needs application-level access to submit the field data. Limiting factors: only affects code paths that write GeoJSON extra members from untrusted names, standard GeoJSON usage without attacker-controlled extra-member names is unaffected, and the impact is confined to data correctness and driver-side readability rather than code execution or data theft. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity data-integrity issue (CVSS 4.0 base 5.3), not a high-impact remote code execution or disclosure flaw, and the available signals are internally consistent on that point. The vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) shows network reach with low attack complexity but requires some privilege (PR:L) - the attacker must be able to feed field names through an application that uses the driver. Impact is limited to integrity (VI:L) and availability (VA:L); confidentiality is explicitly VC:N, so despite the input 'Information Disclosure' tag this is not a confidentiality breach. No EPSS score was provided, the CVE is not in CISA KEV, and no public exploit or PoC reference is present - only the vendor release and the CSHARP-6179 Jira ticket. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a real but non-urgent fix rather than an emergency. Net: a legitimate correctness/integrity bug worth patching on a normal cycle, not a widespread-exploitation priority. Note the conflict to verify: the 'Information Disclosure' categorization contradicts the CVSS VC:N impact. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An application using the MongoDB C Driver serializes GeoJSON geometry and places user-supplied strings into GeoJSON extra members. An attacker (an application user able to control those field names) submits a name that collides with a reserved GeoJSON member such as 'type' or 'coordinates', causing the driver to write a document with duplicate geometry fields so the server and the driver later resolve different values for the same record, and some affected records become unreadable through the driver. No public exploit code or PoC is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
GeoJSON documents written through the MongoDB C
Driver can be persisted with duplicate geometry members, so the server and the driver resolve different values for the same record and affected documents may become unreadable through the driver, interrupting application read paths. Exposure is limited to applications running driver versions 1.8.0 up to but not including 3.13.0 that copy user-supplied field names into GeoJSON extra members and allow those names to collide with reserved members such as type and coordinates; standard GeoJSON usage without attacker-controlled extra-member names is unaffected. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.3 (authenticated, network-reachable, confidentiality none, integrity low, availability low), no public exploit was identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released 3.13.0 as the fix.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade the MongoDB C
Driver to 3.13.0 (https://github.com/mongodb/mongo-csharp-driver/releases/tag/v3.13.0), which per the release notes now rejects GeoJSON extra members that collide with declared members, alongside the other BSON strictness fixes tracked in CSHARP-6179 (https://jira.mongodb.org/browse/CSHARP-6179). Because 3.13.0 turns the previously silent write into a rejection, code paths that currently pass user-supplied names into extra members will start failing after the upgrade, so validate or allowlist those names against reserved GeoJSON members before the upgrade rather than after, and review stored documents that may already contain duplicate geometry fields, since those records can remain unreadable through the driver and may need to be rewritten outside the affected code path. Applications that cannot upgrade immediately should stop routing untrusted field names into GeoJSON extra members, which removes the only described route to the defect but leaves the driver otherwise unpatched.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is classified as CWE-694, Use of Multiple Resources with Duplicate Identifier, and it sits in the driver's GeoJSON serialization path: when the driver writes GeoJSON extra members it does not verify that their names collide with declared members such as type and coordinates, so the resulting BSON document can carry two fields with the same effective geometry identity. Because duplicate-key resolution is not defined consistently between the server and the client-side driver, the same stored record can deserialize to different values depending on which side reads it, and the driver may fail to read the record at all - matching the assessed CVSS 4.0 vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:L, where the PR:L value reflects the application-level access an attacker needs to submit the field data. The trigger requires a specific application usage pattern (user-controlled names flowing into GeoJSON extra members) and the sources do not describe any other route to the defect; the referenced JIRA issue, CSHARP-6179, and the 3.13.0 release notes frame the fix as part of a broader tightening of BSON/GeoJSON input validation alongside CSHARP-6157, CSHARP-6162, CSHARP-6166 and CSHARP-6168.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
The MongoDB C
Driver writes GeoJSON extra members without checking whether their names collide with reserved GeoJSON members such as type and coordinates. An application that places user-supplied field names into these extra members can store documents with duplicate geometry fields, so the server and the driver resolve different values for the same record. Affected records can also become unreadable through the driver, interrupting application code that reads them.
