MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the attacker can place a file with a maliciously crafted name (containing an apostrophe / single quote) somewhere the victim will enumerate with television, AND that the victim then triggers an action that passes entries through format_command - notably the bundled default edit action (template "${EDITOR:-vim} {}" from cable/unix/files.toml). Limiting factors: the attack is LOCAL (the crafted filename must reach the victim's filesystem, e.g. via a shared folder, downloaded archive, or cloned repo), it requires victim user interaction (selecting the entry and invoking the action - the attacker cannot fire it remotely), and it only affects television versions 0.15.0 through 0.15.9. Commands execute with the victim user's privileges, not elevated. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but access-constrained vulnerability rather than a mass-exploitation priority. The authoritative CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P) scores 8.5 and is internally consistent with the description: the attack vector is LOCAL, not network, and requires passive user interaction (the victim triggering an action such as the default edit action on an attacker-named file). High VC:H/VI:H/VA:H reflects full command execution with the victim's privileges. Exploitation status is 'publicly available exploit code exists' - a working PoC is committed in the fix (tests/poc_command_injection.rs) and VulnCheck published an advisory - but this is NOT confirmed active exploitation: the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV and no EPSS probability was provided in the input. These signals are consistent (no conflict): a local, user-interaction-dependent flaw in a developer CLI tool with a public PoC but no KEV listing points to a real-but-contained issue, not widespread automated exploitation. The key missing data is EPSS score and any real-world exploitation telemetry; absent those, treat this as an important patch-soon issue for affected users rather than an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a file whose name embeds a shell payload inside an apostrophe (e.g. "x'; printf INJECTED; #'") and places it where the victim will browse it - a shared directory, an extracted archive, or a cloned repository. When the victim opens television (tv), navigates to that entry, and triggers an action such as the default edit action, the malformed single-quote escaping in format_command lets the payload break out and run as a separate shell command with the victim's privileges. A functional PoC demonstrating this breakout exists in the vendor's fix commit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
OS command injection in television (tv) 0.15.0 through 0.15.9 lets an attacker who can plant a file whose name contains an apostrophe execute arbitrary shell commands with the victim's privileges once that entry is selected and an action is triggered - most notably the bundled default edit action. The vulnerability is local and requires victim interaction (CVSS 4.0 8.5; independently assessed as CVSS 3.1 AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R with high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact on the victim's account), and no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV. Upstream fix commits addressing the quoting logic have been published by the vendor.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - upgrade to a television build that includes commits d7d46abb791181a3b5b6eed05e72aafcaa0ef269 and 32695ccc6cd2b05cf7f1d3b80c24e324d5343eec (https://github.com/alexpasmantier/television/commit/d7d46abb791181a3b5b6eed05e72aafcaa0ef269, https://github.com/alexpasmantier/television/commit/32695ccc6cd2b05cf7f1d3b80c24e324d5343eec), and confirm the installed binary is later than 0.15.9 or built from a commit containing both; the vendor's advisory is at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/television-0.15.0-through-0.15.9-os-command-injection-via-external-action-formatting. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the effective compensating control is to stop expanding untrusted filenames into a shell: override the bundled edit action (and any other action using {} in cable/unix/files.toml or your config) with a template that avoids the shell wrapper entirely, or remove the action, accepting that you lose one-keystroke editing on selected entries. Alternatively, restrict television to directories you control and never run it over shared mounts, extracted archives, or cloned repositories whose filenames you have not reviewed - this eliminates the delivery path (attacker-planted filename) at the cost of convenience, and does not protect against pre-existing malicious filenames already on disk. Because exploitation requires the victim to select and act on the crafted entry, no network-level mitigation exists; commands run with the invoking user's privileges, so avoid running television as a privileged or broadly credentialed account.

Technical ContextAI · show details
television is a Rust-based terminal fuzzy-finder that enumerates channel entries (files, in the bundled files channel defined in cable/unix/files.toml) and substitutes them into user-configurable action templates. In television/utils/command.rs, format_command splices selected entries into a template such as the default edit action ${EDITOR:-vim} {}, wrapping each entry in POSIX single quotes and escaping embedded apostrophes with \' (.replace('\'', r"\'")). That escape is invalid in POSIX shell syntax: a backslash inside single quotes is literal, so a filename containing ' terminates the quoted string and everything after it is parsed by the shell before shell_command hands the string to the interpreter. The fix replaces the escape with the standard '\'' sequence (close quote, escaped apostrophe, reopen quote) so the payload remains a single literal argument; the commit also adds tests/poc_command_injection.rs, which feeds the payload x'; printf INJECTED_BY_POC_MARKER; #' through the echo {} template and asserts the string is echoed literally rather than executed. This is CWE-78 (improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command), rooted in string-built shell invocation rather than argument-vector execution - the same class of defect affects any template where {} is expanded into a shell string, not just the edit action.

DescriptionCVE.org
Television (tv) 0.15.0 through 0.15.9 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to run shell commands through improperly escaped single quotes in format_command. Attackers can plant a file with a crafted name containing an apostrophe so that triggering an action like the default edit action executes commands with victim privileges.
Executive ViewAI
The television (tv) utility versions 0.15.0 through 0.15.9 contain a high-severity command injection flaw that can let a local, unauthenticated attacker run arbitrary commands with a victim's privileges if the victim selects a crafted filename and triggers an action such as the bundled default edit action. Because exploitation requires local file placement and user interaction, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, the immediate organizational risk is concentrated among users running the affected tv releases rather than broad remote exposure. Leadership should prioritize inventory and remediation of those installations to prevent potential confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts on user accounts.
