Exploitation Conditions

Requires that the target Janus WebRTC Server (meetecho janus-gateway, versions through 1.4.3) be running with the Record&Play plugin loaded and its signaling API reachable by the attacker; the attacker then supplies a record-request filename containing path separators. No authentication is required (CVSS PR:N) and no user interaction is needed (UI:N). Exploitation is LIMITED by three factors: the created/truncated file must end in -audio.mjr, -video.mjr or -data.mjr (attacker does not control arbitrary filenames or file contents freely), the write only succeeds where the Janus process's OS user already has write permission and outside 'protected folders', and the Record&Play plugin must actually be enabled - deployments without that plugin are not affected.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-severity issue, not a top-tier emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated vector requiring no user interaction - all signals that favor easy exploitation - and public exploit code exists (VulnCheck advisory plus a hackmd writeup), so the barrier to attack is low. However, the impact is deliberately constrained: the 4.0 vector sets VC:N/VI:L/VA:N, meaning only limited integrity impact and NO confidentiality or availability impact, which is why the score lands at 6.9 (Medium) rather than critical. The vulnerability writes or truncates files but only those ending in -audio.mjr, -video.mjr or -data.mjr and only where the Janus process already has write permission, which meaningfully limits the blast radius (it is not arbitrary-content file write or direct RCE). No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified here, and the CVE is NOT on the CISA KEV list, so there is no evidence of active in-the-wild exploitation despite POC availability - POC existence and active exploitation are distinct signals. Net: prioritize patching on internet-exposed Janus instances with the Record&Play plugin enabled, but treat it as an integrity/DoS-adjacent hardening fix rather than a wormable RCE.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker reaches the Janus signaling API of an internet-exposed server with the Record&Play plugin enabled and issues a record request whose filename contains path-traversal sequences (e.g. ../../). Because the filename is not sanitized before being combined with recordings_path, the server creates or truncates a .mjr file outside the intended recordings directory anywhere the Janus process can write. Public exploit code is available (VulnCheck advisory and a hackmd proof-of-concept), lowering the effort required.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Unauthenticated path traversal in Janus WebRTC Server through 1.4.3 allows attackers to write files outside the configured recordings path via the Record&Play plugin's record request filename when the plugin is loaded and its signaling API is reachable. Exploitation is limited: the attacker can only create or truncate files ending in -audio.mjr, -video.mjr, or -data.mjr where the Janus process has write permissions, yielding low integrity impact (CVSS 6.9). Publicly available exploit code exists, but no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) has been reported.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; consult the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/janus-webrtc-server-through-1.4.3-path-traversal-via-record-play-filename) and the Janus WebRTC Server GitHub repository (https://github.com/meetecho/janus-gateway) for updates. As compensating controls, disable the Record&Play plugin if recording functionality is not required (trade-off: loss of recording and playback features), restrict access to the Janus signaling API to trusted networks or authenticated users via firewall rules or a reverse proxy (trade-off: may limit legitimate client connectivity), and run the Janus process with a dedicated low-privilege OS user whose write permissions are confined to the intended recordings_path directory (trade-off: may break other features that require writing elsewhere). Additionally, monitor for creation or modification of files with -audio.mjr, -video.mjr, or -data.mjr suffixes outside the configured recordings_path as an indicator of exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Janus WebRTC Server is an open-source WebRTC gateway (meetecho janus-gateway) that mediates real-time communication sessions. The Record&Play plugin enables recording and playback of WebRTC sessions, storing media in .mjr files (e.g., -audio.mjr, -video.mjr, -data.mjr). The vulnerability is a path traversal (CWE-22) in the record request handling: the filename parameter used to construct the output file path is not sanitized for directory separators, allowing an attacker to escape the configured recordings_path directory. According to the references, the flaw resides in janus_recordplay.c (line 1965) and record.c (line 218). The CPE confirms all versions of meetecho:janus-gateway are potentially affected through 1.4.3. Exploitation requires the Record&Play plugin to be enabled and its signaling API reachable; the write succeeds only where the Janus process user has write permission and outside protected folders, and the filename must end in one of the three .mjr suffixes.

DescriptionCVE.org

Janus WebRTC Server through 1.4.3 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the Record&Play plugin that allows unauthenticated attackers to write files outside recordings_path via the record request filename. Attackers can supply filenames with path separators to create or truncate files ending in -audio.mjr, -video.mjr or -data.mjr anywhere the Janus process can write outside protected folders.
