MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to deliver a crafted URL to the vulnerable endpoint admin_area/flagged_item.php with a malicious value in the type GET parameter, AND a currently authenticated administrator or moderator must actively click/open that link while logged into the admin panel (CVSS UI:A confirms required victim interaction). Limiting factors: the payload only executes in the context of an already-authenticated admin/moderator session, so it cannot be triggered against anonymous users or the server directly; it is a reflected (non-persistent) vector, meaning each victim must individually open the attacker-supplied link; and the vendor patch restricts $type to the Flag::getFlagElementTypes() allowlist, neutralizing the injection on updated builds (through 5.5.3-#206 affected). |
| Impact | This is a reflected cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) in ClipBucket v5's admin_area/flagged_item.php, reported by VulnCheck with a vendor patch available. The only severity signal provided is a CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N, score 5.1): network vector, low complexity, no attacker privileges, but requiring active user interaction (UI:A) from the victim, with impact limited to subsequent-system confidentiality and integrity (SC:L/SI:L) - consistent with script executing in the admin panel origin rather than compromising the vulnerable server itself. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC flag was supplied; accordingly this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and is not confirmed actively exploited. The practical risk is moderate and contingent: exploitation depends on social-engineering a logged-in administrator or moderator into clicking a crafted link, so despite the AV:N/PR:N network reachability this is a targeted, interaction-gated issue rather than a wormable or mass-exploitable one. Treat it as a meaningful but not emergency priority - patch in normal cycle - with the main caveat that a security researcher writeup (hackmd) and a VulnCheck advisory exist, which lowers the barrier to someone weaponizing it even though no exploit artifact is confirmed in the input. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a flagged_item.php?type= URL embedding malicious JavaScript in the unencoded type parameter and sends it (via email, chat, or a planted link) to a ClipBucket administrator or moderator. When the authenticated victim opens the link, the reflected payload executes in the admin panel origin, letting the attacker run actions as the admin, steal session context, or pivot within the admin interface. A hackmd writeup and VulnCheck advisory describe the issue, but no confirmed public exploit code was provided in the input. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in ClipBucket v5 (affected through 5.5.3-#206) lets an unauthenticated attacker execute arbitrary JavaScript in the administrative origin by luring a currently logged-in administrator or moderator into opening a crafted /admin_area/flagged_item.php?type= URL; the type GET parameter is echoed into the admin page without encoding. Exploitation is not server-side or anonymous - it requires the victim's interaction (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, 5.1, and the vendor vector's UI:A), and because the vector is reflected rather than stored each target must individually open the attacker-supplied link, which limits breadth but not the severity of a successful admin-context script execution. A vendor fix commit that restricts type to Flag::getFlagElementTypes() is referenced in public advisories, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, so the practical risk is concentrated in deployments that have not yet applied the upstream fix.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor fix commit fc593252a18ddea76f82f316bb0c60bd7653d9ae (or a later release containing it, once an exact patched version is confirmed by the vendor); the commit validates the type parameter against the Flag::getFlagElementTypes() allowlist and redirects unknown values, which neutralizes the reflective injection, so this is the preferred and lowest-risk action and no known side effects are expected for legitimate flag-type navigation beyond rejecting invalid types. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict access to the admin_area path at the network or reverse-proxy layer so only trusted administrative IP ranges can reach flagged_item.php - the trade-off is reduced flexibility for admins working remotely or on mobile - and deploy a WAF rule that rejects or sanitizes flagged_item.php requests whose type parameter contains angle brackets, quotes, or script-like tokens, accepting that signature-based filtering can be bypassed with encoding tricks. Adding htmlspecialchars()/contextual output encoding around the type value in flagged_item.php and flagged_item.html is an effective local backport for custom builds. Operationally, instruct administrators and moderators not to open flagged_item.php?type= links from unsolicited messages, since the flaw only fires in a logged-in admin session, and enforce short session lifetimes so a successful injection has a smaller window. Confirm exposure via the CPE and references above and track the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/clipbucket-v5-through-5.5.3-206-reflected-xss-via-type-parameter-in-flagged-item-php) and the project repository (https://github.com/MacWarrior/clipbucket-v5) for the confirmed patched release version.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ClipBucket is a PHP-based video sharing and streaming CMS, and the flaw lives in the administrative module admin_area/flagged_item.php, which reads the $_GET['type'] parameter and forwards it unvalidated into the admin-area template upload/admin_area/styles/cb_2014/layout/flagged_item.html, where it is rendered directly into the generated HTML. Because no output encoding or context-aware escaping is applied (CWE-79, improper neutralization of input during web page generation), an injected value breaks out of the intended markup and executes in the origin of the admin panel, giving the attacker access to admin session context, DOM state, and any CSRF tokens or actions reachable from that page. The affected package is tracked as cpe:2.3:a:macwarrior:clipbucket-v5:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all v5 builds through 5.5.3-#206). The upstream fix commit fc593252a18ddea76f82f316bb0c60bd7653d9ae adds an in_array($type, Flag::getFlagElementTypes()) check that loads unknown types with a session warning and redirects, so only known flag element types reach the template. The underlying technology stack is plain PHP with server-rendered templates, which is why the mitigation is an application-level allowlist rather than a framework-level auto-escape.

DescriptionCVE.org
ClipBucket v5 through 5.5.3-#206 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in admin_area/flagged_item.php via the unencoded type GET parameter. Attackers can send crafted flagged_item.php?type= links to logged-in administrators or moderators to execute injected script in the admin panel origin.
