| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to already possess local, authenticated access with at least low privileges on the affected host (CVSS AV:L/PR:L) and the ability to invoke the Windows Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) Enclave interface - meaning VBS must be enabled/deployed on the target, which is standard on modern hardware-backed Windows but not universal on all legacy or VM configurations. No user interaction is needed (UI:N) and attack complexity is low (AC:L) once local access exists. The principal limiting factors are the local-only vector (no remote network path), the requirement for pre-existing privileges, and dependence on VBS being active; these constrain realistic risk to post-compromise escalation rather than initial access. |
| Impact | Signals are moderately aligned toward a real but non-emergency priority. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.8 is driven largely by the scope change (S:C) and full triad impact (C:H/I:H/A:H), but the vector itself requires local access (AV:L) and existing privileges (PR:L), so this is a privilege-escalation primitive, not a remotely reachable flaw. CISA's SSVC framework corroborates lower urgency: Exploitation is rated 'none' (no observed exploitation) and Automatable is 'no', meaning it cannot be reliably mass-exploited, even though Technical Impact is 'total'. No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no POC was referenced - so there is no evidence of active or imminent widespread exploitation. Net: this is a credible local EoP in a security-critical component (VBS Enclave) that should be patched on normal-to-expedited Patch Tuesday cadence, but it is not a drop-everything network-exploitable issue. One tag conflict to note: the input Tags include 'Information Disclosure', which contradicts the description (local privilege elevation) and the CWE-822 untrusted-pointer-dereference classification - treat the impact as elevation of privilege, not info disclosure. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already has low-privilege code execution on a Windows 10 1809 or Windows Server 2019 host (e.g., via a compromised standard user account or a sandboxed process) invokes the vulnerable VBS Enclave interface with a crafted pointer value. Because the enclave dereferences an untrusted pointer (CWE-822), the attacker corrupts privileged state across the VBS trust boundary (S:C) to elevate to higher privileges. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and CVSS AC:L indicates the trigger is not conditions-dependent once local access is obtained. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Local privilege escalation in the Microsoft Windows Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) Enclave allows an authenticated attacker who already holds low privileges on an affected host to execute against higher-integrity code inside the isolated secure environment, achieving elevated privileges locally. The defect is an untrusted pointer dereference (CWE-822) in the enclave interface, and because the code runs inside a security boundary the CVSS assessment is scope-changed (S:C) with high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact (CVSS 8.8, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, CISA's SSVC decision framework records exploitation as 'none' and automatable as 'no', and a vendor patch is available, so this is a genuine but non-emergency priority that matters chiefly as a post-compromise escalation primitive on hosts where VBS is deployed.
RemediationAI
Apply the Microsoft security update distributed through the MSRC update guide for CVE-2026-108471 (https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-108471); the EUVD version data indicates that builds at or above 10.0.17763.9376 for the Windows 10 1809 / Windows Server 2019 branch contain the fix, so patch status is 'Patch available per vendor advisory' with that fixed build as the target level. Because the update is a cumulative servicing release, confirm the installed build number after patching rather than relying on the update having been offered. There is no practical network-side mitigation: the attack is local-only (AV:L), so firewall or perimeter controls do not reduce exposure, and the relevant hardening is host-centric. If patching must be deferred, the most direct compensating control is to reduce the population of accounts permitted to log on interactively, over RDP or as services on affected hosts, since the attacker must already hold low local privileges; note the operational cost of tightening logon rights on shared servers. Disabling VBS entirely would remove the attack surface, but that is a heavy trade-off because it also disables Credential Guard, HVCI/memory-integrity protections and VBS-dependent application isolation, materially weakening the host - it should only be considered as a last resort on non-critical, isolated systems. Monitoring for anomalous use of enclave or VSM-related interfaces from low-privilege processes can provide detection coverage where patching lags, though such telemetry is limited on older builds.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Virtualization-Based Security on Windows uses the hypervisor to create a separate virtual trust level (VTL1) that hosts the secure kernel, Virtual Secure Mode (VSM) services and VBS enclaves - isolated address spaces in which trusted code and secrets such as Credential Guard material reside, partitioned from the normal operating system in VTL0. The vulnerability is an instance of CWE-822, untrusted pointer dereference: code inside the enclave accepts a pointer value supplied from the lower-privilege side of the boundary and dereferences it without validating that it lies within a permitted, caller-owned region. Because the dereference happens while executing at a higher trust level, a malicious or compromised low-privilege caller can coerce reads and writes in the secure environment rather than in its own address space, which is why the vector carries S:C - the impact crosses the security boundary into VTL1 rather than staying within the caller's own component. The high confidentiality, integrity and availability ratings reflect that the enclave holds protected credential and policy data and that corrupting secure-world state can destabilise the host. Exploitation is entirely local (AV:L) and requires an interactive or service-level foothold with at least low privileges (PR:L), with no user interaction (UI:N) and low complexity (AC:L) once that foothold exists; EUVD version data ties the affected binaries to the Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019 servicing branch, build 10.0.17763.

Untrusted pointer dereference in Windows Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) Enclave allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity local privilege-escalation vulnerability in the Microsoft Windows Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) Enclave affects systems where VBS is enabled, allowing an authenticated low-privilege user to elevate privileges on the same host. The primary enterprise risk is post-compromise escalation rather than remote or unauthenticated attack, so leadership should prioritize patching VBS-enabled endpoints and servers-especially high-value assets-to prevent an initial foothold from being amplified. Patch available per vendor advisory makes this a manageable but important remediation priority.
Apply vendor patch.
