Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the Pingvin Share X instance (version 0.19.0 up to but not including 1.22.0) has an OAuth/OIDC provider enabled and routed through GenericOidcProvider, and that automatic OAuth email linking in OAuthService.signUp() is active. The attacker must be able to create an account bearing the victim's exact email address on a trusted OIDC/OAuth provider WITHOUT that provider enforcing email verification - the flaw is the missing email_verified claim check, so providers that assert verified emails do not enable the attack. The attacker must also know the victim's email address. These factors (dependence on a specific provider configuration that permits unverified-email registration, plus the enabled auto-linking feature) are the AC:H/AT:P limiting conditions and should be weighed when prioritizing; instances not using OIDC, or using a provider that enforces email verification, are not exploitable.

Impact

This is a genuine high-priority issue rather than a CVSS-inflated one, but with important real-world caveats. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N, PR:N, UI:N, VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) correctly reflects remote, unauthenticated, full-compromise potential - successful exploitation yields complete account takeover including administrator accounts and bypasses TOTP, so confidentiality, integrity and availability of the application are all fully impacted. However, the same vector flags AC:H and AT:P (attack complexity high, attack requirements present), which materially tempers the risk: exploitation is not a trivial one-shot and depends on specific preconditions (see exploitation_conditions). No EPSS score, SSVC decision, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input. Per precision rules, this is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - exploitation is plausible and the root cause is clearly documented in the vendor advisory and patch commit, but there is no evidence of active exploitation or weaponized code. The absence of EPSS/KEV data is a gap, not a contradiction; it simply means spread/likelihood cannot be quantified from the available signals. Net: patch urgently if you run Pingvin Share X with OAuth/OIDC enabled, but the AC:H/AT:P requirements make mass, indiscriminate exploitation less likely than the 9.2 base score alone would suggest.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker learns the email address of a Pingvin Share X user (e.g., an administrator) and registers that same email - left unverified - on an OAuth/OIDC identity provider that the target instance trusts. When the attacker signs in via that provider, OAuthService.signUp() automatically links the OAuth identity to the existing local account because GenericOidcProvider never checks the email_verified claim, logging the attacker in as the victim and bypassing TOTP. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires both a trusting OIDC provider and the automatic email-linking behavior (AC:H/AT:P).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026

Account takeover in Pingvin Share X 0.19.0 through 1.21.x allows remote attackers to seize arbitrary accounts - including administrator accounts - by registering a victim's email address on an enabled OAuth/OIDC provider that does not enforce email verification, then signing in through the OAuth flow, which auto-links to the victim's existing account without any email_verified check and bypasses TOTP. Successful exploitation yields full read/write access to the victim's files and settings as well as any administrative privileges the victim holds. The attack is unauthenticated (CVSS:3.1 PR:N/UI:N) but is not universally exploitable: it requires that the instance has an OAuth/OIDC provider routed through GenericOidcProvider, that automatic OAuth email linking is active, and that the attacker knows the victim's email address and can register it unverified on that provider - the AC:H/AT:P conditions reflected in both the assessed CVSS:3.1 vector (8.1) and the vendor's CVSS:4.0 score of 9.2. No public exploit code or confirmed in-the-wild exploitation was identified at time of analysis; vendor-released fix is available in 1.22.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Pingvin Share X 1.22.0 or later - the vendor-released fix is published at https://github.com/smp46/pingvin-share-x/releases/tag/v1.22.0 and the corresponding code changes are in commit 07aa8c0a96030c439e9018ce94a2778bd37304e6, which both rejects unverified OIDC emails and stops implicit email-based account linking. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls should target the two preconditions: disable all OAuth/OIDC providers (or remove the GenericOidcProvider configuration) so the vulnerable sign-up path is unreachable - this restores password-only authentication and any TOTP enforcement on that path, at the cost of losing SSO for all users - or, where SSO must remain available, configure the identity provider to enforce email verification for every account (a deployment-side control outside the application that eliminates the unverified-email claim the flaw depends on); be aware this depends entirely on provider-side policy and cannot be validated by Pingvin Share X itself. Administrators should also treat installations as potentially compromised if an OAuth provider permitting unverified email registration was enabled before patching, and should review local accounts, OAuthUser mappings, and administrative role assignments for links they did not create. Note that relying on TOTP or other second factors does not mitigate this issue, because the OAuth path issues a session token without the TOTP challenge. Additional detail is available in the vendor advisory GHSA-wrcg-4874-45p7 and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/pingvin-share-x-0.19.0-before-1.22.0-account-takeover-via-oauth-email-linking.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is an improper authentication flaw (CWE-287) in Pingvin Share X's OAuth account-provisioning path. In OAuthService.signUp(), when a user authenticated via an OAuth/OIDC provider presented an email address that already belonged to a local account, the application silently created an OAuthUser mapping and issued a session token for that pre-existing account via auth.generateToken() - an implicit trust in the email claim as an identity assertion. Because GenericOidcProvider never inspected the OIDC id_token's email_verified claim, a provider account created with someone else's address but never verified was treated as equivalent to the legitimate owner. The commit 07aa8c0a96030c439e9018ce94a2778bd37304e6 fixes this in two places: it removes the automatic OAuth-to-local link and instead throws an ErrorPageException("email_already_exists") instructing the user to sign in with a password and link the OAuth account manually from their account page, and it adds a check in GenericOidcProvider that rejects sign-in with ErrorPageException("email_not_verified") when the id_token carries email_verified === false (the OidcIdToken interface was extended with an optional email_verified boolean). Affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:smp46:pingvin-share-x, covering releases from 0.19.0 up to but not including 1.22.0. Note that the flaw also defeats TOTP-based multi-factor authentication, since the OAuth sign-in path issues the session token directly without the TOTP challenge, so MFA does not mitigate this vector.

DescriptionCVE.org

Pingvin Share X from 0.19.0 before 1.22.0 contains an improper authentication vulnerability that allows remote unauthenticated attackers to take over accounts by abusing automatic OAuth email linking in OAuthService.signUp(). Attackers can register a victim's unverified email on an enabled OAuth/OIDC provider, exploiting the missing email_verified check in GenericOidcProvider, to sign in as the victim including administrators while bypassing TOTP.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Pingvin Share X versions 0.19.0 through 1.21.x contain a critical account takeover vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to seize control of arbitrary accounts, including administrators, by exploiting OAuth/OIDC providers that lack email verification. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive files and settings, potential data breaches, and full compromise of the affected platform, posing significant operational and reputational risks. Leadership should prioritize immediate patching and review OAuth configurations to mitigate the threat.
