5DescriptionCVE.org
SumatraPDF is a multi-format reader for Windows. In 3.6.1 and earlier, src/SelectionTranslate.cpp embeds selected or pasted translation text in quoted Windows command lines using incomplete quote-only escaping. The affected BuildGrokTranslateCmdLineTemp(), BuildClaudeTranslateCmdLineTemp(), and BuildCodexTranslateCmdLineTemp() functions can allow attacker-controlled text to inject model, working-directory, approval, or sandbox-bypass flags when the corresponding agentic CLI backend is installed and used. No broader impact is claimed beyond the advisory-supported conditions. No fixed version is available as of this review.

AnalysisAI
Argument injection in the AI translation feature of SumatraPDF 3.6.1 and earlier allows text placed in a document selection or clipboard to be interpreted as command-line flags when an agentic CLI backend (Grok, Claude Code, or Codex) is configured as the translation provider. Because the vulnerable code builds the child process command line with quote-only escaping, attacker-controlled text can smuggle in flags that alter the model, working directory, approval mode, or sandbox settings used by the launched CLI. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that one of the agentic CLI backends - Grok, Claude Code, or Codex - is installed and selected as the translation backend, since the vulnerable BuildGrokTranslateCmdLineTemp(), BuildClaudeTranslateCmdLineTemp(), and BuildCodexTranslateCmdLineTemp() functions only build a child command line when such a backend is used. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The input provides a CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) scoring 7.1 (High), but the real-world priority is lower than the base score suggests. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | No vendor-released patched version was identified at time of analysis, so upgrading alone is not currently an option; the advisory at https://github.com/sumatrapdfreader/sumatrapdf/security/advisories/GHSA-xvxg-cwmx-hr7j states no fixed version is available. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all endpoints for SumatraPDF 3.6.1 and earlier and determine which installations have Grok, Claude Code, or Codex selected as the AI translation provider; immediately disable the AI translation/AI-chat feature or remove the agentic CLI backend from those installations, and instruct users not to invoke translation on untrusted selections or clipboard content. …
