MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated WordPress account at subscriber level or above (per PR:L), so exploitation is gated by having or obtaining such an account - trivial on sites that permit open user/registration (common for a course-selling LMS) and substantially harder where registration is disabled. The site must be running LearnPress 4.4.10 or earlier. Beyond holding a low-privilege account there is no other special configuration prerequisite and no user interaction is needed; the attacker abuses the plugin's user-search handling, which fails to verify authorization and reflects enough signal to act as a per-character oracle against the user_login and user_email columns. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded information-disclosure issue rather than a critical-priority flaw. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N = 6.5 Medium) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, requires low privileges (PR:L corresponds to the stated subscriber-level account), no user interaction, and a pure confidentiality impact (C:H, I:N, A:N) with no integrity or availability effect. The C:H rating is justified because the oracle technique can harvest the complete user roster and the full email of every account, including administrators, which is prime material for targeted phishing and credential-stuffing follow-on attacks. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The vulnerability is NOT on CISA KEV and no public proof-of-concept is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The key moderating factor is the authentication requirement: an attacker needs at least a subscriber account, which on sites that disable open registration meaningfully raises the bar, but on the many WordPress/LearnPress sites that permit self-registration (common for a course-selling LMS) that bar is trivial. Net: a real, worth-patching confidentiality flaw useful primarily as reconnaissance, but not an emergency given the authentication prerequisite and absence of any exploitation or POC signal. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker self-registers (or uses an existing low-privilege subscriber account) on a LearnPress-powered site, then issues crafted user-search requests whose responses behave as a true/false oracle against the user_login and user_email columns. By varying the search string character-by-character, the attacker reconstructs the full email addresses of all accounts - including administrators - for use in subsequent spear-phishing or password attacks. No public exploit code is referenced, so the technique would need to be reproduced from the description and the linked source code. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 17, 2026
An authorization bypass in the LearnPress WordPress LMS plugin (all versions through 4.4.10) lets any authenticated user with subscriber-level access or above abuse the plugin's user-search handler as a character-by-character oracle, reconstructing the full site user roster and the complete email address of any account, including administrators. Because LearnPress is a course-selling plugin that commonly permits open registration, the PR:L prerequisite is often trivially satisfied; no user interaction or additional configuration is required. The issue is a bounded confidentiality problem (C:H, no integrity or availability impact) and no public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis, though upstream fix work is visible in the plugin's Trac repository.
RemediationAI
Update LearnPress to a release newer than 4.4.10 once ThimPress publishes it; the fix is visible upstream in Trac changeset 3750011 (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3750011/learnpress/trunk/inc/admin/class-lp-admin-ajax.php), so treat that changeset as the authoritative patch reference and confirm the patched version number on the plugin's WordPress.org listing before relying on it. Until an upgrade is applied, the most effective compensating control is to close the PR:L gate: disable public user registration and self-enrollment (Settings > General > 'Anyone can register' and LearnPress student-registration options), which removes the low-privilege foothold the oracle requires - the trade-off is that legitimate new students can no longer self-onboard and must be created manually. Secondarily, deploy a WAF rule or reverse-proxy filter that blocks unauthenticated or subscriber-role requests to admin-ajax.php actions tied to LearnPress user search and to LP request-handler user-lookup routes, accepting the risk of breaking admin-side user pickers if the rule is too broad. Review existing user accounts for unexpected subscriber-level registrations (a signal of prior abuse) and rotate/reset credentials for any administrator whose email address may have been enumerated, since disclosed addresses enable targeted phishing and credential-stuffing.

Technical ContextAI · show details
LearnPress is a WordPress learning-management-system plugin built around courses, lessons, quizzes and student enrollment, and it ships its own admin-ajax handlers and request-routing classes (inc/admin/class-lp-admin-ajax.php and inc/class-lp-request-handler.php) that expose user-lookup/search functionality. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the search endpoint performs no capability or ownership check before returning matches against the wp_users user_login and user_email columns, so a low-privileged subscriber reaches data intended for administrators. Because the response distinguishes prefix matches from non-matches, the endpoint behaves as a boolean/prefix oracle - an attacker can enumerate usernames and then binary- or character-walk an email address one character at a time with a bounded number of queries. This oracle-style side channel converts a supposedly innocuous search feature into full disclosure of account identifiers, which is valuable for credential-stuffing, phishing and targeted attacks against administrator accounts. The vulnerability class is authorization/access-control rather than injection or memory corruption, which is consistent with the assessed vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N.

DescriptionNVD
The LearnPress - WordPress LMS Plugin for Create and Sell Online Courses plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 4.4.10 This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to enumerate the complete site user roster and extract the full email address of any WordPress account, including administrator accounts, character-by-character by using the search response as an oracle against both user_login and user_email columns.
