| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a specific application coding pattern, not a default configuration: the AdonisJS app must (1) define a route whose FIRST dynamic path segment (or a wildcard '*' parameter) is populated with attacker-controlled input, (2) generate that URL via Router.makeUrl()/urlFor() or Response.redirect().toRoute(), and (3) use the resulting string as an HTTP redirect destination. Only affected versions prior to 8.2.3 (v8 line) and 9.3.0 (v9 line) are vulnerable. Limiting factors: the victim must actively click the attacker-supplied link (UI:R); APIs that intentionally accept complete redirect URLs are explicitly NOT affected; and applications that do not feed untrusted data into a leading route segment used for redirection are unaffected regardless of version. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, conditional open-redirect (CWE-601) rather than a high-urgency issue. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N = 6.1 Medium) correctly reflects a network-reachable, unauthenticated flaw that nonetheless requires user interaction (victim must click a crafted link) and yields only limited confidentiality/integrity impact with no availability impact. No EPSS score, KEV listing, SSVC decision data, or POC reference was supplied, so there is no signal of active exploitation or automated weaponization - the realistic status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Critically, the flaw is NOT exploitable against a default AdonisJS application: the vendor advisory and commit evidence show it only manifests when the application itself places attacker-controlled data into a dynamic first path segment (or wildcard) AND then uses the generated route URL as a redirect destination. This application-side prerequisite meaningfully lowers real-world risk below what the raw 6.1 score implies, making it a code-pattern-dependent weakness rather than a broadly exploitable vulnerability. The missing EPSS/KEV/POC data is an absence, not a contradiction, so the signals present here are internally consistent. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An AdonisJS application builds a route like '/:page' and uses Router.makeUrl() or Response.redirect().toRoute() with an unsanitized user-supplied value as the first path segment, then redirects the user there. An attacker supplies a value beginning with '/' (e.g. '/evil.example.com'), which the unencoded createURL() helper renders as a scheme-relative URL, redirecting the victim to an attacker-controlled site for phishing or OAuth/token abuse. No public exploit code was identified; exploitation requires the victim to follow the crafted link (UI:R). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026
Missing output encoding in AdonisJS HTTP Server's shared createURL() helper allows an attacker-influenced first route parameter (or wildcard segment) to escape the application's origin and produce a scheme-relative redirect target, enabling open-redirect phishing and OAuth/authentication flow abuse. Only applications running versions prior to 8.2.3 (v8 line) or 9.3.0 (v9 line) are affected, and exploitation is conditional: the app must place untrusted data in a leading dynamic path segment, generate the URL through Router.makeUrl()/urlFor() or Response.redirect().toRoute(), and use that string as a redirect destination - a victim still has to follow the crafted link (UI:R, CVSS 6.1). No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and APIs that intentionally accept complete redirect URLs are explicitly not affected.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a fixed release: Vendor-released patch - AdonisJS HTTP Server 8.2.3 for the 8.x line and 9.3.0 for the 9.x line, available from the v8.2.3 and v9.3.0 release tags and detailed in advisory GHSA-2m6q-8v3h-jqww. If upgrading immediately is not possible, encode or sanitize route parameter values before they reach makeUrl()/urlFor()/redirect().toRoute() - in practice this means rejecting or percent-encoding leading '/' and '\' characters in any first path segment or wildcard value derived from user input (encodeURIComponent on the parameter, or a strict allowlist regex such as ^[A-Za-z0-9_-]+$), with the trade-off that legitimate values containing separators will need per-route encoding. Additionally, do not build redirect destinations from request data: validate redirect targets against a fixed allowlist of internal paths or an origin check before calling redirect(), which neutralizes this class of open redirect at the application layer but requires auditing every redirect()/toRoute() call site. Compensating at the edge, restrict redirect-producing endpoints to same-site navigation and rely on browser or CSP protections (e.g., a restrictive form-action/redirect posture and user-facing interstitial warnings) - these reduce the phishing payoff but do not fix the underlying unencoded URL construction, so patching remains the primary remedy.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is an instance of CWE-601 (URL Redirection to Untrusted Site, 'Open Redirect') caused by the absence of encodeURIComponent when interpolating route parameter values in the createURL() helper at src/client/helpers.ts - the same code path that backs Router.makeUrl()/urlFor() and Response.redirect().toRoute(). Because raw parameter values were pushed directly into the generated URI, a value beginning with a forward slash (for example '/evil.example.com') yielded a scheme-relative URL such as '//evil.example.com', which browsers resolve against the current scheme and navigate off-origin. The upstream fix (commit 4548a0631ce2ef1618f04c7b41465be42cad2f7d) applies encodeURIComponent(String(value)) to both single and wildcard ('*') segment values, so the same input now renders as '/%2Fevil.example.com', and the accompanying tests confirm encoding of slashes, backslashes, query and fragment characters in wildcard arrays. The affected component is tracked by the permissive CPE cpe:2.3:a:adonisjs:http-server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and applies to the Node.js AdonisJS HTTP request-handling package across the 8.x and 9.x release lines before the fixed tags.

1DescriptionCVE.org
AdonisJS HTTP Server is a package for handling HTTP requests in the AdonisJS framework. Prior to 8.2.3 and 9.3.0, AdonisJS HTTP Server inserts route parameter values into URLs without encodeURIComponent in the shared createURL() helper used by Router.makeUrl() and Response.redirect().toRoute(). If an application places attacker-controlled data in a dynamic first path segment and uses the generated route URL as a redirect destination, a value beginning with a slash can produce a scheme-relative external URL. Wildcard parameters are affected by the same missing encoding, while APIs intentionally accepting complete redirect URLs are not affected. An attacker can redirect users from a trusted application to an attacker-controlled site, facilitating phishing or abuse of authentication and OAuth flows. This issue is fixed in versions 8.2.3 and 9.3.0.
