Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that a target application or user invoke FFmpeg on an attacker-controlled RTSP input (an rtsp:// URL or stream) whose malicious server returns an RTSP 3xx redirect with a Location header pointing to an internal host/port under another scheme; the vulnerable ff_rtsp_connect() in libavformat/rtsp.c then follows it without validating the Location, defeating the -protocol_whitelist control. Limiting factors: passive user interaction is required (UI:P) - the attacker cannot act without a victim processing the malicious source - and only FFmpeg builds before 7.1.4 or in the 8.0.x line before 8.0.2 are affected; no authentication is needed (PR:N). Impact is constrained to probing/reaching internal services, not arbitrary read or code execution.

Impact

This is a medium-severity SSRF (CVSS 4.0 base 5.3) whose signals consistently point to a limited, opportunistic rather than high-priority threat. The vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N shows network reach with low attack complexity and no privileges, but exploitation hinges on passive user interaction (UI:P): a victim application or user must be induced to process an attacker-controlled RTSP source. Impact is deliberately capped at low confidentiality and low integrity with no availability effect and no subsequent-system (scope) impact, consistent with an internal-service-probing primitive rather than code execution or data theft. EPSS is not provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified; the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV and no public exploit code is referenced, so under an SSVC-style read exploitation status is 'none', the flaw is only partially automatable (it requires luring a target into parsing a malicious RTSP URL), and technical impact is partial. Net: a real but modest issue - patch in normal cycles, prioritize where FFmpeg ingests untrusted RTSP/remote URLs. No signals conflict; the main data gap is the absent EPSS score and the absence of any POC reference, which keeps confidence about real-world exploitation low.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An application or service that invokes FFmpeg on user-supplied media URLs (for example a transcoding pipeline, thumbnail generator, or upload-by-URL feature) is pointed at an attacker-controlled rtsp:// endpoint. The malicious RTSP server responds with a 3xx redirect whose Location targets an internal host and port under a different scheme, and FFmpeg follows it without validating the URL - bypassing -protocol_whitelist - letting the attacker probe otherwise unreachable internal network services. No public exploit code is referenced in the available data, and UI:P means a victim must first be induced to process the malicious source.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Server-side request forgery in FFmpeg's RTSP handling (ff_rtsp_connect() in libavformat/rtsp.c) lets a malicious RTSP server answer with an RTSP 3xx redirect whose Location header points to an internal host and port under a different scheme, which the library then follows without validating the target - defeating the -protocol_whitelist control. Affected builds are FFmpeg before 7.1.4 and the 8.0.x line before 8.0.2; exploitation is unauthenticated per the CVSS 4.0 vector (PR:N) but requires a victim application or user to process the attacker-controlled rtsp:// source, and impact is bounded to probing/reaching internal services rather than data exfiltration or code execution. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) was identified at time of analysis; vendor patches are available in 7.1.4 and 8.0.2.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to FFmpeg 7.1.4 or 8.0.2 (or a later release in the corresponding branch); distributors and embedded vendors should backport the upstream commits https://github.com/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/commit/ea9e85e54981b8402368d0f21648836d6738f1b1, https://github.com/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/commit/2326bc5f69c9, https://github.com/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/commit/7c011995e394, or https://github.com/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/commit/f9aa8729bce1 - the core change rejects any redirect whose protocol is not "rtsp" - with the pull request at https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/pulls/22292 as the upstream reference. Until patched, do not treat -protocol_whitelist as a boundary control for this issue, since the redirect is followed after that check: instead, disable or avoid the RTSP demuxer in builds where RTSP ingestion is not required, reject or rewrite rtsp:// inputs from untrusted sources before they reach FFmpeg, and confine the FFmpeg process with egress filtering that blocks RFC1918, loopback, link-local, and cloud metadata ranges (169.254.169.254) - the trade-off being that RTSP ingestion stops working, and strict egress rules can break legitimate remote stream sources. The upstream fix also changes behaviour for legitimate cross-protocol redirects (for example RTSP redirecting to HTTP), so validate that any media workflow relying on such redirects still functions after upgrading.

Technical ContextAI · show details

FFmpeg's libavformat implements the RTSP client used whenever an application opens an rtsp:// URL or stream; ff_rtsp_connect() negotiates the session and, prior to the fix, followed RTSP 3xx redirects by parsing the server-supplied Location header and re-dispatching the connection without checking the resulting host, port, or scheme. Because the redirect target was resolved after the initial -protocol_whitelist check, an attacker-controlled RTSP server could steer the client to arbitrary internal addresses and non-RTSP schemes (CWE-918, server-side request forgery), turning the media-processing host into an internal-network probe. FFmpeg is a library embedded in countless media pipelines, transcoders, NVR/surveillance appliances, and services that accept user-supplied URLs, so the vulnerable code is reached whenever the attacker influences the input URI. The upstream fix adds a guard in ff_rtsp_connect() that rejects a redirect whose protocol string is not "rtsp" (returning AVERROR_INVALIDDATA), which is the minimal change needed to stop cross-scheme redirects; the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) and the CVSS 4.0 base of 5.3 agree that confidentiality and integrity impact are low, availability is unaffected, and no subsequent-system impact exists - this is an internal-reachability/SSRF primitive, not a memory-safety or RCE bug. CPE cpe:2.3:a:ffmpeg:ffmpeg:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies FFmpeg itself (library and bundled binaries) with version bounds supplied by the advisory rather than encoded in the CPE.

DescriptionCVE.org

FFmpeg before 7.1.4 and 8.0.x before 8.0.2 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability in ff_rtsp_connect() in libavformat/rtsp.c that follows RTSP 3xx redirects without validating the Location URL. Malicious RTSP servers can redirect FFmpeg to internal hosts and ports under other schemes, bypassing -protocol_whitelist, to probe internal network services.
