V15 - Secure Coding and Architecture Recursion depth limits
|
| Exploitation Conditions | The application must decode attacker-controllable MessagePack input using msgpack5 before version 6.1.0 without first bounding nesting depth. No authentication, user interaction, or non-default configuration is required - versions prior to 6.1.0 had no depth limit at all. Exploitation is LIMITED to availability impact (process/worker/request-handler crash) with no data or integrity consequences, and is mitigated where the application already rejects deeply nested input, isolates decoding in a worker, or enforces a bounded trusted schema. After 6.1.0 the default maxDepth of 100 blocks the attack unless an operator explicitly raises the limit. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity denial-of-service issue, not a high-priority emergency. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L) is internally consistent with the description: a remote, unauthenticated attacker (PR:N) who can supply MessagePack input triggers unbounded recursion in the array/map decoder, exhausting the JavaScript call stack. All impact is confined to availability (A:L, with C:N/I:N) - there is no data exposure or code execution, so the input 'Information Disclosure' tag contradicts the actual impact and appears mislabeled (see data_quality_flags). No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is not in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is referenced, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. The A:L (rather than A:H) rating reflects that the attack interrupts a single process/worker/request handler rather than causing sustained infrastructure-wide outage; in a Node.js service that does not isolate decoding, a crash can still take down a request handler or worker. Overall this is a real but bounded availability risk that warrants routine patching rather than emergency response. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends a small, crafted MessagePack payload containing hundreds of deeply nested arrays or maps to an endpoint of a Node.js service that decodes untrusted MessagePack using msgpack5 < 6.1.0. The recursive decoder descends one frame per nesting level and exhausts the call stack, throwing an uncatchable RangeError that crashes the process, worker, or request handler. No public proof-of-concept is referenced, but the payload is trivial to construct from the public advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026
Stack exhaustion in msgpack5, the MessagePack v5 implementation for Node.js and the browser, allows remote attackers to crash a process, worker, or request handler by feeding deeply nested arrays or maps to the decoder; versions prior to 6.1.0 impose no nesting-depth limit, so unbounded recursion in the decode path overflows the JavaScript call stack. No authentication, user interaction, or non-default configuration is required (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L), but the impact is limited to availability - no confidentiality or integrity loss. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation, and the vendor has released a fix in 6.1.0 that caps decode depth at 100 by default.
RemediationAI
Upgrade msgpack5 to 6.1.0 or later - the vendor-released patch that introduces a default maxDepth of 100 and throws 'Maximum decode depth exceeded' on excessively nested input (see https://github.com/mcollina/msgpack5/releases/tag/v6.1.0 and the advisory https://github.com/mcollina/msgpack5/security/advisories/GHSA-24ch-f2g6-9hhh). Where upgrading immediately is not possible, pre-validate or reject deeply nested input before handing it to the decoder, run decoding inside an isolated worker so a stack overflow kills only that worker rather than the main process, or enforce a trusted schema with a bounded nesting depth; each of these adds parsing or architectural overhead and none fully removes the DoS surface. Operators on 6.1.0 should leave maxDepth at its default of 100 and avoid raising it, since a higher limit re-exposes the recursive path to proportionally deeper payloads; lowering it further tightens protection at the cost of rejecting legitimately nested messages, so tune it against the deepest structure your protocol requires.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MessagePack is a compact binary serialization format in which arrays and maps are nested containers, and msgpack5 implements its v5 spec for Node.js and browsers. The decoder recurses through nested containers via tryDecode calling decodeArray and decodeMap, with each level adding a stack frame. This is CWE-674 (Uncontrolled Recursion): the pre-6.1.0 decoder passed no depth counter through these functions, so an attacker crafting a payload of many nested array/map headers (each only a few bytes) forces deeply recursive decoding until the JavaScript engine's call stack is exhausted and a RangeError propagates, interrupting the process or the request handler. The fix in release 6.1.0 adds a maxDepth option (default 100) validated as a non-negative integer, threads a depth argument through tryDecode, decodeArray, decodeMap and decodeItems, increments it on each container entry, and throws 'Maximum decode depth exceeded' when the limit is surpassed. The change was applied to lib/decoder.js and the built artifacts dist/msgpack5.js and dist/msgpack5.min.js.

msgpack5 is a msgpack v5 implementation for node.js and the browser. Prior to 6.1.0, the array and map decoding paths have no nesting-depth limit, allowing an attacker who can provide MessagePack input to submit deeply nested containers that exhaust the JavaScript call stack and interrupt a process, worker, or request handler. This issue is fixed in version 6.1.0.
