| Exploitation Conditions | The target collection must use Payload's local-authentication strategy with its account lockout mechanism active (maxLoginAttempts / lockTime), which is the default for local-auth collections. The attacker must already know a valid account identifier (email or username) for the specific account to be targeted - the attack cannot lock arbitrary unknown accounts and does not cause a system-wide outage. Limiting factors: impact is confined to denial of sign-in for the identified account(s) until the lock period expires, with no data exposure, no code execution, and no persistence; affected versions are before 3.90.0 (and canary before 4.0.0-canary.34). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity availability issue, not a top-tier priority. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) correctly shows a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated attack, but the only impact metric set is VA:L (limited availability) with no confidentiality or integrity impact and no scope/subsequent-system change, which is why the score lands at 6.9 (Medium) rather than High/Critical. The effective impact is a targeted account-level denial of service: an attacker who already knows a valid email/username can deliberately trip the account lockout mechanism to deny that specific user sign-in. No EPSS score, KEV listing, POC, or SSVC decision data was supplied in the input, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or automatable mass exploitation - treat this as low real-world urgency. One signal conflict to note: the Tag 'Information Disclosure' contradicts the actual mechanism and the CVSS vector, which show an availability-only (VA:L) lockout abuse, not disclosure - the tag appears mislabeled. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who knows a target user's login email or username repeatedly submits invalid credentials to the local-authentication collection's login endpoint until Payload's account lockout threshold (maxLoginAttempts) is reached, locking the legitimate user out until the lock period expires. No authentication or user interaction is required, and the attack can be repeated to keep a high-value account (e.g., an admin) perpetually locked. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis. |

Denial of sign-in in Payload CMS before 3.90.0 (and canary releases before 4.0.0-canary.34) allows an unauthenticated remote attacker who already knows a valid account email address or username to deliberately trigger the account lockout mechanism of a local-authentication collection, preventing that specific user from logging in until the lock period expires. The flaw is rated CVSS 6.9 under CVSS 4.0 (independent assessment: CVSS 3.1 5.3, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, availability-only impact) and requires no prior access, only knowledge of a valid identifier - arbitrary unknown accounts cannot be targeted and no data exposure, code execution, or persistence results. Vendor-released patch: 3.90.0 (canary 4.0.0-canary.34); no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Payload 3.90.0, or to canary 4.0.0-canary.34 or later, which contains the vendor fix; the release is published at https://github.com/payloadcms/payload/releases/tag/v3.90.0 and the upstream change at https://github.com/payloadcms/payload/commit/1c46204a73a0a9f988a80c52690eee5a4ada3cf1, with details in advisory GHSA-v5gf-vpjc-pc7w. If immediate upgrading is not possible, the most direct compensating control is to reduce or disable lockout on local-auth collections by setting maxLoginAttempts to 0 (or a very high value) and lockTime accordingly, accepting the clear trade-off that this removes brute-force protection and increases credential-stuffing risk for those accounts - pair it with strong password policy and, ideally, MFA or IP allow-listing on the authentication endpoints. Alternatively, place a rate limit and/or reverse-proxy or WAF rule in front of the login and credential-recovery endpoints (for example per-IP and per-identifier throttling on POST requests to the Payload auth routes) so that an attacker cannot cheaply generate the failed attempts needed to trip the lockout, though aggressive throttling can itself delay legitimate users and requires tuning to avoid collateral lockouts behind NAT or shared egress IPs. Restricting the admin/API auth surface to trusted networks and treating account email addresses and usernames as non-public reduces the number of accounts an attacker can target, since the attack depends entirely on knowing a valid identifier. Note that per the release change set, deployments can also configure the forgot-password flow's minRequestInterval (default 15000 ms) to limit reset-email abuse; this is a hardening measure for an adjacent flow rather than a substitute for the lockout fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Payload is a free and open-source, Node.js-based headless content management system whose authentication layer supports a 'local' strategy (email/username plus password stored in the CMS database) alongside SSO. Local-auth collections implement a brute-force counter: after maxLoginAttempts failed sign-ins the account is locked for lockTime, the standard behavior for local-auth collections. CWE-307 (Improper Restriction of Excessive Authentication Attempts) is the root-cause class here: the lockout counter is driven purely by failed authentication attempts against an identifier supplied by the requester, and nothing rate-limits or otherwise distinguishes an attacker's deliberately failing requests from a legitimate user's typos. Because the attacker needs only a guessed or leaked identifier - not the password - the same protection intended to slow credential brute-forcing becomes a lever for targeted denial of service against a known account. The advisory covers the payloadcms:payload package (CPE cpe:2.3:a:payloadcms:payload:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) prior to 3.90.0 and canary prior to 4.0.0-canary.34; the release commit 1c46204a73a0a9f988a80c52690eee5a4ada3cf1 also introduces request-throttling configuration around the credential-recovery/forgot-password flow (a minRequestInterval option, default 15000 ms, for reset emails), reflecting the broader hardening of abuse-prone authentication endpoints in that release.

Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. In versions before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34, an unauthenticated attacker who knows an account email address or username can abuse the account lockout mechanism of a local-authentication collection to prevent that account from signing in. This issue is fixed in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.
