|
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires (1) a valid authenticated Ghost staff account that holds the 'view staff invites' permission, and (2) at least one pending invitation for a role of higher privilege than the attacker's (e.g. a pending Administrator or Owner invite) to exist at the time of attack. Exploitation is limited to Ghost versions 4.39.0 through 6.63.x (fixed in 6.64.0) and operates via the authenticated Admin API; it cannot be performed by an unauthenticated or external user, and it fails if no higher-privilege invite is currently pending - hence the vendor's AC:H rating. |
| Impact | This is a genuine privilege-escalation issue (CWE-203, observable discrepancy leaking invite secret tokens) but its real-world priority is moderate rather than urgent. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 7.5 HIGH) is internally consistent with the description: AC:H reflects that exploitation depends on a pending higher-privilege invite existing, and PR:L correctly indicates an authenticated staff user is required - this is NOT an unauthenticated internet-facing flaw. No EPSS score was provided in the input, the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public proof-of-concept is referenced, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The chief limiting factor - a legitimate low-privilege staff account WITH the specific 'view staff invites' permission plus a concurrently pending higher-role invite - means this is an insider/post-compromise escalation path, not a mass-exploitable vulnerability, which aligns with the absence of KEV/POC signals. Overall: a real issue worth patching promptly in multi-author Ghost instances, but not an emergency for single-admin or low-staff-count deployments. Note the full C:H/I:H/A:H rating reflects the downstream consequence of gaining a higher (potentially Owner/Admin) role, not the direct read of a token. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A malicious or compromised low-privilege Ghost staff user who holds the 'view staff invites' permission browses pending invitations and reads the secret invite token belonging to a pending Administrator/Owner invite. They then use that token to accept the invite themselves, binding the high-privilege role to an account they control and escalating from staff to administrator. No public exploit code is referenced, so this would require manual crafting against the Admin API. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026
Privilege escalation in Ghost CMS (versions 4.39.0 through 6.63.x) lets a staff user holding the 'view staff invites' permission read the secret tokens stored in pending invitations, including invitations issued for roles more privileged than their own, and then accept such an invite to elevate their account. Exploitation requires an authenticated staff session against the Admin API plus at least one pending higher-privilege invite at the time of attack, which is why the vendor rates attack complexity as high and the real-world priority is moderate rather than urgent. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and the flaw is fixed in Ghost 6.64.0.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Ghost 6.64.0 - upgrade immediately (https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/releases/tag/v6.64.0; advisory https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/security/advisories/GHSA-v6q3-xqxm-6f5v). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, backport the upstream change set (PR https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/pull/30760, commit 4fb587e4d49667f929b87f7d6a873ae5e9cc087f), which adds restrictAdminApiQueryOptions to the Admin API endpoints; note that a partial backport missing any one of the affected endpoints (actions, automated-emails, emails, invites, labels, members, pages) leaves the leak reachable, so apply the full set or wait for the official release. As compensating controls, remove the 'view staff invites' capability from all but a small set of fully trusted administrators (trade-off: it slows routine staff onboarding), and audit pending invitations so that none for Administrator/Owner or other higher-privilege roles are left outstanding, since exploitation fails when no such invite exists (trade-off: requires ongoing operational discipline). Because the attack is authenticated and confined to the Admin API, restricting network access to the /ghost/ path and enforcing strong staff credentials plus MFA reduce exposure but do not eliminate the flaw; after patching, rotate tokens of any pending invites and review recent staff role changes.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-203 (Observable Discrepancy) combined with overly permissive query handling in Ghost's authenticated Admin API. Ghost is a Node.js content management system whose Admin API browse/read controllers passed client-supplied NQL query options (notably 'fields' and 'filter') directly into the underlying model queries (for example models.Invite.findPage, models.Label.findOne, and the members BREAD browse service). Because the Invite model stores a pending invitation's secret token in a field that should never be selectable by ordinary staff, a user with permission to view staff invites could request that field or infer it from a differing response, leaking a credential-equivalent secret. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:tryghost:ghost confirms the affected product is Ghost core itself, covering both self-hosted installations and Ghost(Pro) sites running an unpatched core version. The upstream fix introduces a shared helper, restrictAdminApiQueryOptions in core/server/api/endpoints/utils/api-filter-utils.js, and wraps query options with it across the actions, automated-emails, emails, invites, labels, members and pages endpoints, replacing the narrower rejectAdminApiRestrictedFieldsTransformer approach with consistent filtering of restricted fields.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Ghost is a Node.js content management system. From 4.39.0 until 6.64.0, staff users with permission to view staff invites were able to discover the secret token of pending invites, including invites for roles with higher privileges than their own. This could allow a staff user to escalate their privileges by accepting a pending invite. This issue is fixed in version 6.64.0.

Executive ViewAI
Ghost CMS versions 4.39.0 through 6.63.x contain a privilege escalation flaw in which a staff user holding the 'view staff invites' permission can read the secret tokens inside pending invitations and accept a higher-privilege invite, potentially taking administrative control of the organization's publishing platform. Leadership should care because an elevated account on the CMS can be used to alter or publish content, access integrated services, and expose editorial or customer data. Exposure is conditional on having an existing staff account and at least one pending invitation for a more privileged role, which narrows the realistic threat to organizations with active invite workflows rather than the entire user base.
Apply vendor patch (Ghost 6.64.0). Until the upgrade is complete, revoke or expire all pending staff invitations, remove the 'view staff invites' permission from staff roles that do not require it, limit invitation issuance to trusted administrators, and monitor Admin API audit logs for invitation acceptance and privileged role changes.
