Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to use the Chaterm desktop client (pre-0.12.1) with the chaterm:// custom URL-scheme handler registered, and to visit or interact with an attacker-controlled web page that triggers the deep-link callback - so success depends on victim interaction (UI:P) and the client reaching an exploitable callback/login state (AT:P, AC:H), not merely on a passive network position. The pre-fix client does not require or verify a signed callback or validate the OAuth state parameter, which is the core enabling condition; the patch introduces RSA-SHA256 signature verification (CHATERM_OAUTH_DEEPLINK_SIGNATURE_ENABLED) plus time-bound pending-state tracking. Meaningful impact (theft of secrets) further depends on the victim having default data sync enabled and having saved hosts, passwords, or private keys; a user with no stored credentials suffers only account-state injection.

Impact

This is a moderate-risk login CSRF (CWE-352) affecting the Chaterm desktop client, best characterized as a real-but-conditional threat rather than a mass-exploitation emergency. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:L) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable via a malicious web page, but gated by high attack complexity (AC:H), a present attack requirement (AT:P - the client must be in or reach an exploitable login/callback state), and required victim interaction (UI:P). The standout signal is the high confidentiality impact (VC:H): a successful attack silently signs the victim into the ATTACKER's account, after which default data-sync uploads the victim's saved SSH hosts, passwords, and private keys to attacker-controlled storage - an unusually severe secondary impact for a CSRF. Mitigating the urgency: no EPSS score was provided, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit/POC is referenced, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. The 6.0 base score likely UNDERSTATES business impact for high-value users (sysadmins, DevOps) because the stolen material is credentials/keys, while OVERSTATING ease because AC:H+AT:P+UI:P require a chained social-engineering flow. Net: prioritize patching for teams whose engineers use Chaterm to store SSH secrets, but this is not a drop-everything internet-wide worm candidate.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker hosts a web page that, when visited by a Chaterm user, invokes a crafted chaterm:// deep-link callback carrying attacker-controlled userInfo without a valid OAuth state value; because the pre-0.12.1 client fails to validate the state parameter, it accepts the forged login. The victim is silently authenticated into the attacker's account, and Chaterm's default data sync then uploads the victim's saved hosts, passwords, and private keys to the attacker's account. No public POC is referenced, though VulnCheck's advisory and the source-level fix (PR #2326) document the vulnerable callback handler.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026

Login cross-site request forgery in the Chaterm desktop client before 0.12.1 allows unauthicated remote attackers to inject a forged login state by triggering a crafted chaterm:// OAuth deep-link callback that the client neither signs nor validates against the original state parameter. A victim only needs to visit an attacker-controlled page while the chaterm:// handler is registered; the client then completes login as the attacker's account, and if default data sync is enabled, saved hosts, passwords, and private keys are uploaded into that attacker-controlled account. Exploitation is conditional rather than trivial - it requires victim interaction and a reachable callback/login state (AC:H, AT:P), and the confidentiality impact scales with how many secrets the victim has stored; there is no confirmed active exploitation and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released the fix in 0.12.1, which adds RSA-SHA256 signature verification of deep-link callbacks plus time-bound pending-state tracking.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to the vendor-released patch version 0.12.1 (release tag https://github.com/Chaterm/Chaterm/releases/tag/v0.12.1), which is the primary and sufficient fix; the change (PR https://github.com/Chaterm/Chaterm/pull/2326, commit https://github.com/Chaterm/Chaterm/commit/41f747f17845cd980f289cc9ea8ff9978b6f7ad6) enables signed deep-link callback verification and five-minute time-bound pending-state tracking, so patched clients reject unsigned or stale chaterm:// callbacks. Until every endpoint is upgraded, compensating controls are: disable default data sync so saved hosts, passwords, and private keys are not automatically uploaded to whatever account is active (trade-off: manual sync/backup), and review/remove stored credentials from the client's vault if compromise is suspected. Because the attack vector is the chaterm:// handler, restricting or unregistering that protocol handler on managed endpoints blocks the delivery path entirely (trade-off: SSO/browser-based login via deep link stops working). Advise users not to click untrusted chaterm:// links or browse attacker-controlled pages while the client is running, and monitor for unexpected account switch or sync-upload events; the vendor advisory is at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/chaterm-before-0.12.1-login-csrf-via-chaterm-oauth-callback and the upstream repository at https://github.com/Chaterm/Chaterm.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Chaterm is an Electron-based desktop SSH/terminal client that registers a custom chaterm:// URL protocol handler to complete OAuth/SSO logins through an external browser. The vulnerable flow is a textbook CWE-352 cross-site request forgery: the pre-0.12.1 client accepted a deep-link callback carrying an attacker-supplied userInfo blob, method, state, and timestamp, and bound the resulting session without validating the OAuth state value or proving the callback originated from the legitimate identity provider. Because the callback is delivered through the OS URL-scheme mechanism rather than a same-origin web request, a malicious web page can silently hand the client an arbitrary identity, causing a login-CSRF / session-fixation condition. The upstream fix (PR #2326, commit 41f747f17845cd980f289cc9ea8ff9978b6f7ad6) bundles an RSA public key (resources/oauth_deeplink_public_key.pem) with the packaged application, gate-enables verification via RENDERER_OAUTH_DEEPLINK_SIGNATURE_ENABLED / CHATERM_OAUTH_DEEPLINK_SIGNATURE_ENABLED, and validates an RSA-SHA256 signature over a canonicalized payload of userInfo, method, state, and timestamp using crypto.createVerify. It also introduces a five-minute, per-window pending login state (EXTERNAL_LOGIN_STATE_TTL_MS) that is cleared after use and persisted in a Linux cookie, ensuring a callback must correspond to a login the client itself initiated. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:chaterm:chaterm:* confirms the whole pre-0.12.1 client line is in scope.

DescriptionCVE.org

Chaterm before 0.12.1 contains a login cross-site request forgery vulnerability that allows remote attackers to inject login state by sending chaterm:// callbacks without OAuth state validation. Attackers can trigger a crafted callback with attacker-controlled userInfo from a web page, signing the victim into the attacker's account so default data sync uploads saved hosts, passwords, and private keys.
