| Impact | All available signals converge on this being a LOW real-world priority rather than a high-CVSS-but-overstated issue. The CVSS 3.1 base score is only 4.3 (Medium), and its vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N) already reflects a limited, integrity-only impact requiring an authenticated actor. The EPSS score of 0.15% (3rd percentile) indicates very low predicted exploitation probability, and CISA's SSVC framework classifies Exploitation as 'none', Automatable as 'no', and Technical Impact as only 'partial' - all three agreeing with the low CVSS. The issue is NOT on the CISA KEV list and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so no signals conflict with the low-risk conclusion. The one nuance worth stating explicitly is that the input Tag labels this an 'Authentication Bypass,' which is inaccurate: CWE-639 and the CVSS PR:L value both show this is an AUTHORIZATION flaw abusable only by an already-authenticated user who authored the issue, not a pre-authentication bypass. The fix (PR #39501, issue_attachment.go) and affected range (Gitea ≤28.0.0, fixed in 28.1.0) are well corroborated across NVD, the Gitea GHSA advisory, and EUVD, so confidence in the vulnerability itself is high even though its practical severity is modest. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Gitea user opens an issue in a repository they can access; other collaborators then reply with comments that include file attachments. Abusing the issue-attachment API endpoint, the issue author passes a comment's attachment_id and renames or deletes other users' comment attachments, even though those should not be under their control. No public exploit code exists, but the attack is trivial (AV:N/AC:L) for any user who can open an issue; it cannot alter attachment contents, only metadata/existence. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Authorization bypass in Gitea's issue attachment API (CVE-2026-105268) lets an authenticated user who authored an issue rename or delete attachments that other users posted in comments on that same issue, because the endpoint /api/v1/repos/{owner}/{repo}/issues/{index}/assets/{attachment_id} failed to exclude comment-owned attachments from the set the issue author is allowed to manage. Only metadata operations (rename/delete) are possible - attachment contents cannot be altered (C:N), and no data outside the attacker's own repository scope is reachable. Rated CVSS 4.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N) with an EPSS of 0.15% (3rd percentile) and an SSVC assessment of Exploitation:none / Automatable:no / Technical Impact:partial, so no public exploit was identified at time of analysis; this is a low-priority integrity/data-destruction defect, not a confidentiality or code-execution issue.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Gitea 28.1.0, which contains the corrected ownership check (Vendor-released patch: 28.1.0); the fix is described in the upstream PRs 39501 and 39507 and the release blog at https://blog.gitea.com/release-of-28.1.0/, with the advisory at https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/security/advisories/GHSA-96qg-qxxj-r8xq. There is no configuration toggle that disables just this endpoint, so patching is the primary remedy. If immediate upgrade is not possible, administrators can reduce exposure by restricting API access to trusted networks (e.g. blocking /api/v1/repos/*/issues/*/assets/* at a reverse proxy) - but note this breaks legitimate attachment operations for all users - or by auditing which accounts can open issues, since the permissive path requires only low-privilege authenticated access (PR:L); neither workaround removes the underlying flaw and both degrade normal functionality.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a textbook CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key) instance: the API handler attachmentBelongsToRepoOrIssue used user-supplied path parameters (repository owner/name, issue index, and attachment_id) to authorize access, but its ownership check only verified that the attachment was attached to some issue rather than confirming the attachment belonged to the issue itself. In Gitea's data model, an attachment record carries both an IssueID and optionally a CommentID; attachments uploaded with a comment have CommentID != 0. The original guard rejected only attachments where IssueID 0 (i.e. not in an issue at all), so a comment attachment reachable through the attacker's own issue was treated as an issue attachment the author is permitted to edit or delete. The upstream fix in PR 39501 tightens the condition to attachment.IssueID 0 || attachment.CommentID != 0, explicitly excluding comment-owned attachments. This is a classic object-reference authorization defect where the key (attachment_id) is attacker-controllable and the policy boundary between issue-level and comment-level ownership was not enforced.

2DescriptionCVE.org
The Gitea API routes for issue attachments (/api/v1/repos/{owner}/{repo}/issues/{index}/assets/{attachment_id}) also accepted attachments that belong to comments on the issue. Because the author of an issue may edit and delete the issue's attachments, a user who opened an issue could rename or delete attachments that other users had posted in comments on that issue. The contents of the attachments could not be changed.
