Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated MISP account holding the decaying-model permission (perm_decaying) plus network access to the instance (matching CVSS PR:L). The concrete trigger is the decaying model import endpoint: the attacker supplies a nested 'DecayingModel' key containing its own primary key (id), org_id, and default flag, which the import code fails to strip (it only unsets top-level id/uuid and pins org_id/default on the outer array). Limiting factors: perm_decaying is not granted to ordinary users by default, there is no confidentiality or availability impact (overwrite/ownership change only), and only MISP versions below 2.5.48 are affected - patched instances rebuild the row from an allow-list.

Impact

This is a genuine but bounded authorization/mass-assignment flaw (CWE-915) rather than an unauthenticated critical. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) and the stated preconditions agree: network-reachable, low complexity, but requires an authenticated account holding the perm_decaying permission (PR:L) - not a default right for ordinary users, which materially limits the attacker population. Impact is integrity-only (VI:H; VC:N/VA:N) - an attacker cannot read other organisations' data or take down the service, but can overwrite, re-own, or set as default another organisation's decaying model, corrupting scoring for all users of that model. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC flag was supplied, so exploitation-probability signals are absent; however, the patch commit ships a working regression test that exercises the exact nested-key bypass, meaning a reliable technical reproduction is effectively public even if no weaponised exploit tool is. Net: a real priority for multi-tenant/shared MISP instances where untrusted orgs hold decaying permissions, but lower urgency for single-org deployments. One caveat: EPSS and KEV data are missing and cannot be confirmed either way from the provided input.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged but authenticated MISP user who has been granted the decaying-model permission submits an import request whose JSON contains a nested 'DecayingModel' object carrying an arbitrary id, org_id, and default:1 flag. Because the server only strips these fields from the outer array, the nested values survive the save and overwrite a victim organisation's existing model in place - altering its name, formula, ownership, or default status. No standalone public exploit tool is identified, but the vendor's own patch includes a regression test that demonstrates the full bypass end to end.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026

Improper input validation in MISP's decaying model import endpoint allows an authenticated user with the perm_decaying permission to overwrite, re-own, or re-flag decaying models belonging to other organisations in MISP versions before 2.5.48. The import handler strips only the top-level id and uuid fields and pins org_id/default on the outer array before saving the record flat, so a nested 'DecayingModel' key can smuggle its own primary key, organisation identifier, and default flag past those guards, letting an attacker modify an existing model in place, reassign its organisation, or set it as the organisation default and thereby alter scoring behaviour for other users. This is a bounded authorization/mass-assignment flaw rather than an unauthenticated critical: successful exploitation requires network access to the instance plus an account holding perm_decaying (not granted to ordinary users by default), and there is no confidentiality or availability impact; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and an upstream fix commit (70e319e4b) exists.

RemediationAI

Upgrade MISP to 2.5.48 or later, which contains the upstream fix commit https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/70e319e4b that rebuilds the imported decaying model row from an explicit allow-list (name, parameters, description, ref, formula, version, enabled, all_orgs), forces org_id to the importer's own organisation, sets default to 0, and calls create() to discard any attacker-supplied primary key; note that the patch is distributed as an upstream commit and the corresponding tagged release was not independently confirmed beyond the stated <2.5.48 affected boundary. Where immediate upgrading is not possible, reduce exposure by auditing and revoking perm_decaying from all roles except a small set of trusted administrators - this directly removes the precondition for exploitation but has the operational side effect of blocking legitimate decaying-model authors from importing models - and, as a stricter compensating control, restrict or block access to the decayingModel/import endpoint at the reverse proxy or via role configuration so that only trusted accounts can reach it, accepting that this breaks the intended import workflow for those users. Because exploitation is silent and in-place, also review existing decaying models for unexpected changes to name, formula, parameters, org_id, or the default flag, and compare models against known-good exports to detect prior tampering; there is no vendor advisory page beyond the referenced commit.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) is an open-source threat-intelligence sharing platform, and decaying models are the scoring constructs used to age and prioritise attributes and indicators over time (formula, parameters such as lifetime, decay_speed and threshold, plus per-organisation and default flags). The vulnerability is an instance of CWE-915, improperly controlled modification of dynamically determined object attributes - commonly called mass assignment. The affected code path is DecayingModelController::import in app/Controller/DecayingModelController.php, which consumed a multipart form field (data[DecayingModel][json]) rather than a JSON body, applied unset() only to the top-level id and uuid keys, then pinned org_id and default on the outer array before calling save() on the flattened input. Because the CakePHP ORM treats the nested 'DecayingModel' key as the model alias and honours a primary key present at that level, an attacker-supplied nested structure could trigger an update of an arbitrary existing row instead of an insert, carrying its own organisation and default flag with it. The upstream patch replaces the blacklist-style stripping with an explicit allow-list (name, parameters, description, ref, formula, version, enabled, all_orgs) combined with array_intersect_key, forces org_id to the authenticated user's organisation and default to 0, and calls create() before save(), which discards any nested primary key. A regression test class (DecayingModelImportOwnership) was added in tests/testregressions.py to assert that imported models cannot overwrite another organisation's model, be created for another organisation, or be flagged as default. The affected product is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, and the supplied tags classify the issue as an authentication bypass in MISP, though the practical effect is a broken object-level authorization / model-ownership bypass rather than authentication bypass per se.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains an improper input validation vulnerability in the decaying model import functionality. The import endpoint was intended to create a new decaying model belonging exclusively to the importing user's organisation, with the default flag forced to off.

However, the application stripped only the top-level id and uuid fields and pinned org_id and default on the outer array before saving the data flat. A user with decaying-model permissions could supply a nested model key carrying its own primary key, organisation identifier, and default flag, which bypassed those guards during the save operation.

Impact:

  • A user with perm_decaying could overwrite an existing decaying model belonging to another organisation in place, altering its name, formula, parameters, or ownership.
  • A user could create or modify a model flagged as the organisation default, affecting scoring behaviour for other users.
  • A user could reassign a model's organisation to an arbitrary value.

Preconditions:

  • Authenticated user with decaying-model permission (perm_decaying).
  • Network access to the MISP instance.

Affected: <2.5.48.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A permission-boundary flaw in MISP, the open-source threat intelligence sharing platform, allows users who already hold the perm_decaying privilege to silently modify, reassign, or re-flag threat-scoring models owned by other organizations. Affected organizations could see their indicator scoring behavior altered without their knowledge, undermining confidence in the intelligence they share and act on. Impact is confined to data integrity within MISP deployments running versions prior to 2.5.48, and exploitation requires a non-default account privilege, so leadership attention should focus on patch governance and review of who holds elevated MISP permissions.
