Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that a user invoke Ludwig's dataset-loading path (which downloads and extracts configured archive URLs via ludwig.datasets.archives.extract_archive) against a tar archive that the attacker controls or has compromised - this is the mandatory UI:R interaction. The archive must contain a symlink or hard-link member pointing outside the destination directory followed by a member written through that link, abusing both the missing link validation and the character-based os.path.commonprefix containment check. Exploitation is LIMITED to Ludwig versions prior to 0.17.8 running on Python 3.12 or 3.13; Python 3.14 is not exploitable because its default tar 'data' filter rejects escaping links. No authentication on the target system is needed (PR:N), but the attacker cannot succeed without the victim choosing to process the malicious archive from a source the attacker influences.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional high-severity issue, not an inflated high-CVSS score. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H, base 8.1) accurately captures the shape of the flaw: a network-reachable archive path, low complexity, no privileges on the target, but mandatory user interaction (UI:R) - a user must choose to process an attacker-controlled or compromised archive. Impact is arbitrary file write (I:H, A:H) with no direct confidentiality loss (C:N), consistent with a path-traversal/link-escape write primitive rather than data disclosure. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or published POC was supplied in the intelligence, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are internally consistent (there is no AV:N-vs-local-access contradiction here, because the dataset-loader does fetch remote archive URLs), but UI:R plus the requirement that the archive originate from an attacker-controlled source makes this targeted/social-engineering-dependent rather than wormable or mass-exploitable. The runtime scoping is an important mitigating fact independently confirmed by the vendor advisory and commit: only Python 3.12 and 3.13 are affected, because Python 3.14's default tar 'data' filter already rejects escaping links. Overall this warrants prompt patching for ML pipelines that ingest third-party datasets, but it is not a drop-everything internet-facing emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker publishes or compromises a dataset archive referenced by a configured URL; when a victim loads that dataset through Ludwig, extract_archive() processes a crafted tar containing a symlink that escapes the extraction directory followed by a regular file written 'through' that link, placing attacker-controlled content at an arbitrary filesystem path with the extracting process's privileges (e.g. overwriting a config, cron, or startup file to gain code execution). No public exploit code was identified in the supplied data, but the technique is well-understood and the vulnerable code path is confirmed in the fix commit. The attack only succeeds on Python 3.12/3.13 runtimes and requires the victim to initiate processing of the malicious archive.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Arbitrary filesystem write in Ludwig versions prior to 0.17.8: the dataset archive extraction routine (ludwig.datasets.archives.extract_archive) validates tar member names but never validates symlink or hard-link members, so a crafted archive can create a link that escapes the extraction directory and then write a later member through that link, placing attacker-controlled content at an arbitrary path with the extracting process's privileges. The same name check relied on os.path.commonprefix, a character-based comparison that also lets a sibling path sharing the destination's character prefix pass. Exploitation requires the victim to load a dataset whose configured archive URL points at an attacker-controlled or attacker-compromised tar file (CVSS 3.1: AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H - unauthenticated from the network, but mandatory user interaction), and is limited to Python 3.12 and 3.13 runtimes because Python 3.14's default tar 'data' filter already rejects escaping links; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Ludwig 0.17.8, which contains commit 7f534f31e725cc5362c8f6f85537488443de279a adding safe_extract_tar(), link-target validation, the UnsafeArchiveError type, and an explicit filter="data" argument to TarFile.extractall (see https://github.com/ludwig-ai/ludwig/releases/tag/v0.17.8 and the advisory https://github.com/ludwig-ai/ludwig/security/advisories/GHSA-qvrm-3x4c-rcxf). If upgrading is not immediately possible, the most effective compensating control is to run dataset loading on Python 3.14, whose default tar data filter independently rejects escaping links and therefore neutralizes the write primitive - the trade-off is a runtime migration with potential dependency incompatibility. Alternatively, avoid invoking the dataset-loading path against archive URLs that are not fully trusted, and if archives are fetched externally, extract them out-of-band with tarfile filter="data" or a hardened extractor and point Ludwig at the already-extracted directory; this removes the vulnerable code path but shifts responsibility for validation to the operator. Restricting outbound network access from the Ludwig host to only known-good dataset hosts reduces the attack surface but does not fix the underlying traversal logic, and running the extraction under a low-privilege, containerized account with a read-only or narrowly scoped filesystem limits where attacker-controlled writes can land while accepting degraded functionality if the process legitimately needs broad write access.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic CWE-22 path traversal implemented inside a tar-extraction helper in the Ludwig low-code ML framework. Ludwig's dataset loader can download and extract archive URLs, and its pre-0.17.8 containment check only inspected member.name values by joining them onto the destination and comparing os.path.abspath results with os.path.commonprefix. commonprefix compares characters rather than path components, so '/data/dest-evil' is judged to live inside '/data/dest'; the patch replaces it with os.path.commonpath, which compares components. The more serious gap is that link members were never examined at all: extraction first creates a symlink (target interpreted relative to the link's own directory) or a hard link (target resolved from the archive root) pointing outside the destination, then writes a subsequent regular member whose path resolves through that link - both members pass a name-only check because the link does not exist yet at validation time. The fix introduces is_within_directory(), _resolve_link_destination(), and a new safe_extract_tar() that validates both member names and resolved link destinations, raises a dedicated UnsafeArchiveError (a PublicAPI LudwigError/ValueError subclass), and explicitly passes filter="data" to TarFile.extractall so Python 3.12/3.13 get the same protections that became the stdlib default in Python 3.14. The vulnerability is a file-write primitive only - the CVSS vector scores C:N/I:H/A:H, i.e. integrity and availability impact with no confidentiality impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

Ludwig is a low-code framework for building custom LLMs, neural networks, and other AI models. Prior to 0.17.8, ludwig.datasets.archives.extract_archive() validated tar member names before calling TarFile.extractall() but did not validate symlink members or hard-link members. A crafted archive could create a link that escaped the extraction directory and then write a later member through that link, placing attacker-controlled content at an arbitrary filesystem path with the extracting process's privileges. The same containment check used os.path.commonprefix, so a sibling path sharing the destination's character prefix could also pass. The dataset-loading path can download and extract configured archive URLs, but exploitation requires a user to process an archive from a source controlled or compromised by the attacker on supported Python 3.12 and 3.13 runtimes. Python 3.14 is not affected because its default tar data filter rejects escaping links. This issue is fixed in version 0.17.8.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Ludwig, an open-source machine learning framework, has a high-severity vulnerability that allows attackers to write arbitrary files on systems where users load datasets from untrusted archives. This affects data science and engineering teams using Ludwig, potentially leading to data corruption, unauthorized code placement, or system compromise. Leadership should care because exploitation requires only user interaction and can undermine the integrity of critical data processing pipelines.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Use Python 3.14 runtime where feasible; restrict dataset ingestion to trusted sources; implement application-level validation of archive members (reject symlinks/hard links, use os.path.realpath for path checks); run extraction with least privileges; monitor filesystem for unauthorized writes.
