MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires ALL of the following: (1) the target MISP instance must have the legacy taxonomy tag confirmation views (add_tag / disable_tag forms) enabled; (2) the victim must be an authenticated MISP site administrator with an active session; and (3) that administrator must be induced to click an attacker-crafted URL whose tag name parameter contains a JavaScript payload (UI:A - active user interaction). The attacker needs no credentials or prior access to the instance (PR:N), but cannot self-trigger the payload - it executes only in the targeted admin's browser, making successful phishing the primary limiting factor. Versions 2.5.48 and later are not affected (output is escaped via h()). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-to-moderate priority issue whose real-world risk is tempered by several limiting factors rather than an exploitable-at-scale flaw. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:A/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N, 5.1 Medium) tells a consistent story with the description: network-reachable and low-complexity, but gated on active user interaction (UI:A) by a specific, high-value victim - an authenticated MISP site administrator who must be social-engineered into clicking an attacker-crafted URL. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; the signals are internally consistent (no conflict between CVSS and description). The confidentiality/integrity impacts are rated Low because a reflected XSS yields script execution in one administrator's browser session, not direct server compromise - though for a threat-intelligence platform, theft of an admin session/CSRF token and subsequent privileged actions in the MISP UI is a meaningful secondary consequence the base score arguably understates. Note the CVSS 4.0 vector keeps subsequent-system impact at N (SC:N/SI:N), whereas a CVSS 3.1 model of the same XSS would typically set S:C; this is a framework-modeling difference, not a data conflict. Net: patch promptly, but this is not an internet-wide mass-exploitation candidate given the admin-click precondition. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a URL to a victim MISP instance's legacy taxonomy 'add tag' or 'disable tag' confirmation form with a malicious tag name parameter containing JavaScript, then phishes a logged-in MISP site administrator into clicking it. The unescaped tag name is reflected into the rendered HTML and executes in the administrator's authenticated session, allowing session/CSRF token theft or privileged actions in the MISP UI. No public POC was provided, but the one-line fix (wrapping the value in CakePHP's h() escaping helper) confirms the trivially reproducible root cause. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in MISP before 2.5.48 lets an attacker execute arbitrary JavaScript in an authenticated site administrator's browser by luring that admin to a crafted URL whose taxonomy tag name parameter is echoed unescaped into the legacy add_tag and disable_tag confirmation views. Exploitation requires no credentials or prior access to the instance (PR:N), but it cannot be self-triggered: the payload only fires in the victim admin's session after active user interaction with a malicious link (UI:A), so convincing phishing is the decisive limiting factor. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released a patch (fixed in 2.5.48, commit 9619083c8), making this a genuine but low-to-moderate priority issue rather than an exploitable-at-scale flaw.
RemediationAI
Upgrade MISP to version 2.5.48 or later, which applies the vendor fix from commit 9619083c8 by wrapping the taxonomy tag name in CakePHP's h() HTML-escaping helper in both app/View/Taxonomies/add_tag.ctp and app/View/Taxonomies/disable_tag.ctp; this is the authoritative remediation and eliminates the reflected sink entirely. Where an immediate upgrade is not feasible, remove or disable the legacy taxonomy tag confirmation views so the unescaped echo paths are never reachable - the trade-off is that administrators lose the legacy tag confirmation UI and must manage taxonomy tags through the current interface or API, which changes established admin workflows but does not affect tag data itself. Because the payload is only reachable through the URL and requires an admin to click it, restricting administrative access to trusted networks and requiring administrators to navigate to the MISP UI by bookmarked URL rather than following external links reduces exposure, though this is a behavioral control with limited reliability. Also treat any administrator who clicked a suspicious taxonomy tag link as potentially compromised: rotate that account's session and CSRF artifacts and review recent privileged actions. The advisory and patch reference are available at https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/9619083c8; no CISA KEV entry or public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so emergency patching cadence can be prioritized against other actively exploited issues.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a classic reflected cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) in MISP's PHP/CakePHP presentation layer. In the legacy taxonomy tag management confirmation views (app/View/Taxonomies/add_tag.ctp and app/View/Taxonomies/disable_tag.ctp), the CakePHP request data value $this->request->data['Taxonomy']['name'] was interpolated directly into rendered HTML - once as the confirmation form label and once inside a __('Tag %s will be disabled.') translation string - without the framework's HTML-escaping helper. The vendor fix wraps both sinks in CakePHP's h() escaping function, which encodes the tag name so any injected markup is rendered as inert text instead of parsed as HTML, defeating script injection in the administrator's browser context. The affected component is the legacy taxonomy tag confirmation workflow; because the payload returns in the immediate HTTP response to the crafted request rather than being stored, the attack surface is limited to browsers that actively request the malicious URL. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms the affected product is the core MISP platform itself (MISP/MISP on GitHub). The independent assessment rates this as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, capturing a network-reachable, low-complexity issue with no attacker prerequisites, changed scope due to the XSS executing in the admin's session, and low confidentiality and integrity impact - consistent with client-side script execution and potential session/CSRF token theft rather than server compromise.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the legacy taxonomy tag management confirmation forms (add tag and disable tag).
The affected forms echoed a user-supplied tag name value from the request unescaped into the rendered HTML output. An attacker who can induce a site administrator to visit a crafted URL containing a malicious tag name parameter can execute arbitrary JavaScript in the administrator's browser session.
Preconditions:
- The target must be running a MISP instance with the legacy taxonomy tag confirmation views enabled.
- The victim must be an authenticated site administrator.
- The victim must navigate to the attacker-crafted URL (e.g., via a phishing link).
Security impact:
- Execution of arbitrary client-side script in the context of the administrator's browser.
- Potential theft of session tokens, CSRF tokens, or other sensitive data accessible from the page.
- Potential for performing privileged actions on behalf of the administrator within the MISP interface.
Affected versions: <2.5.48.
