MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated MediaWiki account with permission to submit or edit Page Forms content (PR:L), on a wiki running the Page Forms extension version 1.43, 1.45, or 1.46. The payload is stored, so a second victim user must subsequently view the affected page for the script to fire (UI:P/victim interaction). Limiting factors: attacker authentication is mandatory, impact is confined to Low across confidentiality/integrity/availability, the AT:P attack requirement implies non-trivial conditions must hold, and realistic harm depends on a higher-privileged user viewing the poisoned content. |
| Impact | This is a low-real-risk, high-friction stored XSS despite being a memory-safety-adjacent web flaw. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:P) scores only 1.2 - driven down by required attacker authentication (PR:L), an attack requirement (AT:P), required victim interaction (UI:P), and uniformly Low technical impacts (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L). No EPSS score is provided and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no public-exploitation-probability signal and no confirmed active exploitation. The E:P (Proof-of-Concept) exploit-maturity metric in the vendor vector hints that exploit knowledge exists, but no public exploit was identified at time of analysis - treat E:P as a maturity estimate, not evidence of a released POC. Net: this is a genuine stored XSS worth patching on a normal cadence, but it is NOT an urgent priority - exploitation requires an authenticated contributor account and a victim who views the poisoned page. One caveat: stored XSS executing in another user's authenticated MediaWiki session can realistically enable session/CSRF-token theft and action-on-behalf, which is arguably underweighted by the vendor's uniform VC/VI/VA:L rating. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated low-privilege MediaWiki user with edit rights submits a Page Forms form containing script-related HTML tags that the extension fails to neutralize, storing the payload in a wiki page. When another user - potentially an administrator - subsequently views that page, the script executes in their browser under their MediaWiki session. The E:P maturity flag suggests proof-of-concept knowledge exists, but no public exploit code was identified in the provided intelligence. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the MediaWiki Page Forms extension (versions 1.43, 1.45, and 1.46) lets an authenticated user who can submit or edit Page Forms content plant script-related HTML that executes in the browser of any other user who later views the affected page. Exploitation is high-friction: the attacker must hold a valid MediaWiki account with form-edit privileges, stored payloads only fire when a second user opens the poisoned page, and the late-breaking CVSS 4.0 score is only 1.2 while our independent assessment rates confidentiality and integrity impact Low with no availability impact. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the flaw is not confirmed actively exploited (no CISA KEV listing); realistic harm depends on luring a higher-privileged user to view the tainted page.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - the remediation is tracked through the Gerrit change I4ace525a1c1760ecdd1d770380606d9960d3e644 and Wikimedia Phabricator task T435622 (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T435622), so operators should apply that patch or upgrade the Page Forms extension to a revision containing it once a tagged MediaWiki release carrying the fix is published, and verify the fix landed in their deployed branch (1.43, 1.45, or 1.46). Because exploitation requires an authenticated account with form-edit rights, effective compensating controls include restricting the ability to create or edit Page Forms content to a tightly vetted trusted group (for example by removing the relevant edit permission from broad user groups) at the trade-off of reducing legitimate form-driven editing, and disabling the Page Forms extension entirely on wikis where it is not essential at the trade-off of losing structured page creation. A Content-Security-Policy that disallows inline script can blunt stored payload execution but risks breaking legitimate wiki gadgets and inline scripts, and output sanitization extensions (such as a stricter HTML purifier on form output) provide defense in depth rather than a substitute for the upstream patch. Monitor Phabricator T435622 for the confirmed fixed release before declaring remediation complete, and re-scan any pages created through Page Forms for injected markup after patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is CWE-80 (Improper Neutralization of Script-Related HTML Tags in a Web Page), the classic basic-XSS class in which user-supplied markup is emitted into HTML output without adequate escaping or filtering. MediaWiki's Page Forms extension allows wiki editors to create and edit pages through structured forms, and the affected versions (1.43, 1.45, 1.46) fail to sanitize certain form-supplied content before it is re-rendered, so injected script tags persist in the stored page content and execute in each viewer's session. The reported CPE cpe:2.3:a:the_wikimedia_foundation:mediawiki_page_forms_extension:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the extension rather than MediaWiki core as the affected component, so sites running core MediaWiki without Page Forms are not exposed by this CVE. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L/SC:L/SI:L/SA:L/E:P/S:N/AU:Y/R:U/V:D/RE:M/U:Amber) is consistent with our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N): network-reachable, low attack complexity, but requiring attacker authentication (PR:L) and measurable Attack Requirements (AT:P) plus victim interaction (UI:P), with only Low impact across the confidentiality/integrity/availability triad and limited subsequent-system impact. This is a low-severity, high-friction stored XSS rather than a memory-safety or remote-code-execution condition.
