Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target Sentry instance has SAML SSO configured and enabled (versions 26.5.0 up to but not including 26.7.2). The attacker must control a SAML identity provider and must socially engineer an already-authenticated Sentry user into opening a crafted malicious URL (required user interaction). A critical limiting precondition is the victim's browser cookie behavior: the attack only succeeds if the browser accepts the cross-site cookie context - specifically Firefox sending SameSite=None cookies, or Chromium with third-party cookies explicitly enabled - which is not the default in current Chromium builds, substantially narrowing the exploitable population. Sentry SaaS was remediated on July 27, 2026, so SaaS tenants are not affected; the condition applies to self-hosted deployments on vulnerable versions.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.6 (High) is driven by VC:H/VI:H - full account takeover compromises both confidentiality and integrity of the victim's Sentry account - with AV:N (a malicious URL delivered over the network). However, two metrics materially temper real-world risk: AT:P (a specific attack requirement) and UI:P (victim interaction required). The attack requirement is concrete and limiting - the victim's browser must accept a cross-site cookie context (Firefox with SameSite=None, or Chromium with third-party cookies explicitly enabled), a configuration that modern Chromium increasingly blocks by default, so a large share of potential victims are not exploitable out of the box. PR:N indicates no attacker privileges on Sentry, but the attacker must separately control a SAML identity provider and must socially engineer an already-authenticated user, which is a non-trivial precondition. EPSS, SSVC, and POC signals are ALL ABSENT from the input, and KEV status is not listed (no active-exploitation signal). This is therefore a genuine priority specifically for organizations running SAML SSO on self-hosted Sentry versions 26.5.0 through pre-26.7.2, but it is not a mass/wormable issue: exploitation is targeted, interaction-gated, and dependent on victim browser configuration rather than opportunistic. No conflicting signals were found between the CVSS vector and the description - both agree on network delivery with required user interaction and an environmental browser precondition.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who operates a SAML identity provider crafts a malicious link and, through phishing, convinces an authenticated Sentry user to open it in a browser that accepts cross-site cookies (e.g. Firefox with SameSite=None or Chromium with third-party cookies enabled). The SAML SSO identity-linking flow then binds the attacker's IdP identity to the victim's Sentry account, giving the attacker control of that account. No public proof-of-concept exploit code was identified in the provided data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Improper authentication in the SAML SSO identity-linking flow of self-hosted Sentry 26.5.0 through 26.7.1 lets an attacker who controls a SAML identity provider trick an already-authenticated user into opening a crafted URL, link the attacker's federated identity to that user's Sentry account, and achieve full account takeover (CVSS 4.0 base 7.6, High; independent assessment CVSS 3.1 7.6 with C:H/I:H). Exploitation is constrained by two prerequisites: the victim's browser must accept the cross-site cookie context (Firefox sending SameSite=None cookies, or Chromium with third-party cookies explicitly enabled, which is not the Chromium default), and the target deployment must have SAML SSO configured, so the realistically reachable population is narrower than the raw score suggests. Sentry SaaS was remediated on July 27, 2026 and is not affected; self-hosted instances are fixed in 26.7.2, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade self-hosted Sentry to 26.7.2 or later - the vendor-released patch: 26.7.2 - using the self-hosted release at https://github.com/getsentry/self-hosted/releases/tag/26.7.2 or the upstream release at https://github.com/getsentry/sentry/releases/tag/26.7.2, and consult advisory GHSA-w699-8wff-fqxw for details; operators who cannot immediately upgrade can backport commits 9c982d4bcb81c93e2db552084bcbb45cdd34bdd3 and ec963de4ec8c7f340f286c6f613e55458a9e5ddf, which pin the identity-confirmation form actions to the canonical sentry-auth-sso endpoint, strip the op parameter in the SAML ACS views, and stop trusting the session-stored _next value for the post-2FA redirect. If patching must be deferred, the most effective compensating control is to temporarily disable SAML SSO identity linking (or SAML SSO entirely) for affected organizations - the trade-off is that SSO users fall back to password/alternate authentication or lose access until re-enabled, so coordinate with affected orgs beforehand. Because the exploit hinges on cross-site cookie transmission, tightening browser-side policy also reduces exposure: encourage users on Firefox to set Enhanced Tracking Protection to block cross-site cookies and keep Chromium third-party cookies disabled (the default), though this breaks other legitimate embedded/federated content; note this is a user-side mitigation, not a server-side fix. Finally, review authentication and audit logs for unexpected identity-link or op=confirm activity against existing accounts, and treat any such link as a potential account compromise requiring session invalidation and password reset.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Sentry's authentication pipeline supports SAML 2.0 single sign-on and an account-linking (identity confirmation) flow in which an existing Sentry session is associated with an external identity assertion. The flaw is an instance of CWE-287 (Improper Authentication) in that linking pipeline. The upstream fix (commit 9c982d4b, PRs 120467 and 120702) hardens three related behaviours: the identity-confirmation and confirm-link templates were changed so their forms post to a fixed canonical sentry-auth-sso action instead of relying on the current request URL; the op operation parameter was made meaningful only at /auth/sso/ and is now unconditionally stripped in the SAML ACS views via a new strip_op_from_post() helper; and the post-2FA redirect no longer trusts the session-stored _next destination, instead building an absolute URI from the canonical sentry-auth-sso route. The removed regression test (test_saml_response_in_post_ignores_op) shows the prior handling of op combined with an attacker-supplied SAMLResponse was the pivot that let a hostile IdP drive the linking decision. The attack additionally depends on ambient cookie semantics - a cross-site cookie context is required for the pipeline state to be presented to the attacker-controlled flow, which the CVSS 4.0 vector reflects with AT:P (attack requirements present) and UI:P (partial user interaction); the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector uses AC:H/UI:R for the same constraints.

DescriptionCVE.org

Sentry is an application monitoring and error tracking platform. From 26.5.0 until 26.7.2, the SAML SSO identity-linking flow allows an attacker who controls a SAML identity provider to socially engineer an authenticated user into opening a malicious URL, link the attacker's identity to the victim's Sentry account, and take control of that account. The attack requires a browser that accepts the cross-site cookie context, including Firefox with SameSite=None cookies or Chromium with third-party cookies enabled. Sentry SaaS received the remediation on July 27, 2026, and self-hosted Sentry is fixed in version 26.7.2.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Self-hosted Sentry deployments between versions 26.5.0 and 26.7.1 contain a flaw in the SAML single sign-on account-linking flow that can result in complete takeover of a user's Sentry account, exposing any source code, issue data, and credentials accessible to that identity. Only organizations running self-hosted Sentry with SAML SSO configured are exposed, and exploitation additionally requires a victim to open a crafted link from a browser that permits cross-site cookies, so the realistic exposure is narrower than the headline severity suggests. Sentry's hosted service is not affected and has already been remediated; leadership should care because a compromised Sentry identity is a direct path into engineering systems and sensitive code repositories.
