Exploitation Conditions

Requires all of: (1) a Netty QUIC client on versions 4.2.11.Final through 4.2.17.Final; (2) the application configured with a PLAIN javax.net.ssl.X509TrustManager (not an X509ExtendedTrustManager) - the BoringSSLCertificateVerifyCallback discards the SSLEngine for plain trust managers so endpoint identification never runs; (3) HTTPS/endpoint-identification hostname verification nominally enabled (the flaw silently defeats it); and (4) an active attacker on the network path able to intercept the connection and present a valid-but-wrong-hostname certificate chain the trust manager will accept. Limiting factors: exploitation is impossible without an MITM/on-path position, does not affect clients using X509ExtendedTrustManager, and is confined to the QUIC certificate-verification code path rather than Netty's general TLS handling.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H) scores 8.7 and implies trivial, unauthenticated remote exploitation, but this is a TLS/QUIC hostname-verification bypass (CWE-295) that in practice REQUIRES an active man-in-the-middle position on the network path - the attacker must be able to intercept the QUIC connection and present a mis-issued/wrong-hostname certificate. That MITM prerequisite is not reflected in the vendor's AT:N and materially raises real attack complexity; I assess AC:H (3.1) / AT:P (4.0). The vendor rates VC:H but VI:N, yet a successful hostname bypass on an interactive client channel typically enables both interception (C) and traffic manipulation (I), so integrity impact is arguably understated. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Net: a genuine, patch-worthy authentication-integrity flaw, but realistic priority is MEDIUM rather than the 8.7 'high' would suggest, gated on a narrow config (plain X509TrustManager over QUIC) plus network-path access, not opportunistic mass exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A Netty-based QUIC/HTTP3 client (versions 4.2.11-4.2.17) configured with a plain X509TrustManager and HTTPS endpoint identification connects to a remote server. An attacker positioned on the network path (rogue Wi-Fi, compromised router, BGP/DNS redirection) intercepts the handshake and presents a certificate chain issued for a DIFFERENT hostname; because the SSLEngine is discarded for plain trust managers, hostname identification never runs and the client accepts it, letting the attacker impersonate the server and read/alter the session. No public exploit code is currently identified.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026

Hostname verification bypass in Netty's QUIC client affects versions 4.2.11.Final through 4.2.17.Final when the application supplies a plain javax.net.ssl.X509TrustManager rather than an X509ExtendedTrustManager, allowing an attacker positioned on the network path to present a certificate chain for the wrong hostname that the trust manager still accepts. In practice exploitation requires an active man-in-the-middle position rather than a trivial remote attack, since the attacker must intercept the QUIC connection and hold a valid-but-mis-matched certificate; the CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) overstates this precondition. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and clients using X509ExtendedTrustManager are not affected; Netty 4.2.18.Final resolves the issue.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Netty to 4.2.18.Final or later, which reworks trust-manager handling so that plain X509TrustManager instances are wrapped and endpoint identification runs in the QUIC path (see the vendor advisory GHSA-mj35-3qqm-q387 and the upstream fix commits 09e72c4fd8007277121ed48db63a124b112b96fe and 994e887ed9). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most direct compensating control is to stop using a plain X509TrustManager with QUIC clients and instead supply an X509ExtendedTrustManager (or a trust manager that explicitly performs hostname/endpoint identification in its checkServerTrusted methods), since clients using X509ExtendedTrustManager are not affected by this bypass. As an additional layer, treat QUIC/TLS traffic as untrusted on hostile network paths and rely on end-to-end application-layer authentication or certificate pinning, though pinning changes certificate-rotation operational overhead. Note that merely enabling HTTPS verification in configuration is insufficient on the vulnerable versions - the on-path MITM prerequisite means the flaw cannot be exploited without an attacker already positioned to intercept the QUIC connection.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is an improper certificate validation issue (CWE-295) in Netty's QUIC certificate-verification path built on BoringSSL. When a QUIC client is configured with a plain javax.net.ssl.X509TrustManager (as opposed to the X509ExtendedTrustManager subclass), Netty's BoringSSLCertificateVerifyCallback discards the SSLEngine reference, so the JDK endpoint-identification routine that normally performs hostname verification never executes inside the callback. This means HTTPS/endpoint-identification hostname checking that appears to be enabled is silently skipped for QUIC clients. Netty's own SimpleTrustManagerFactory previously wrapped plain X509TrustManager instances into an X509TrustManagerWrapper so that hostname verification would still be enforced; the related commit (09e72c4fd8007277121ed48db63a124b112b96fe) moves that wrapping responsibility into InsecureTrustManagerFactory and adds a regression test, correcting the handling of trust managers in the QUIC verification path. The root problem is specific to QUIC and to plain trust managers - Netty's general TLS handling and clients using X509ExtendedTrustManager are unaffected, which is the key limiting factor relative to the generic CVSS 4.0 vector.

DescriptionCVE.org

Netty versions from 4.2.11.Final before 4.2.18.Final contain an incomplete hostname verification fix in the QUIC certificate verification path when using a plain X509TrustManager. The BoringSSLCertificateVerifyCallback discards the SSLEngine for plain trust managers, preventing endpoint identification from running even when HTTPS verification is configured. Attackers on the network path can present a certificate chain for the wrong hostname that the plain trust manager accepts, bypassing hostname authentication for QUIC clients.

Technical POC Analysis

CWE-297 (Improper Validation of Certificate with Host Mismatch), secondary CWE-295 (the advisory's primary/secondary labels are inverted relative to the CVE record).

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Organizations using Netty's QUIC client versions 4.2.11.Final through 4.2.17.Final with a plain X509TrustManager are exposed to a hostname verification bypass that could allow a network-positioned attacker to intercept encrypted traffic. This affects the confidentiality of data in transit for any service relying on affected Netty builds, potentially leading to credential or sensitive information exposure. Leadership should prioritize remediation because successful exploitation undermines trust in TLS-like protections for QUIC connections.
