MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an already-established, authenticated RustDesk peer connection to a Linux or macOS host on which the file-transfer permission is DISABLED - the defect is that the Cliprdr message handler serves incoming file-clipboard (FormatDataRequest / FileContentsRequest) messages without calling file_transfer_enabled(). Exploitation is limited to hosts running RustDesk before 1.5.0 on Linux/macOS; Windows is not named. The primary limiting factor is that the attacker must be an authorized connected peer (PR:L), so this escalates the reach of an existing restricted session rather than granting unauthenticated access; no additional user interaction is required. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-severity, session-gated issue rather than an urgent priority. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N, base 5.3) correctly reflects the shape of the flaw: network-reachable and low-complexity, but requiring an already-authenticated, connected peer (PR:L) and yielding only limited confidentiality and integrity impact (VC:L/VI:L, no availability impact). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public weaponized exploit are present in the supplied intelligence, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no signal of active or automatable exploitation. The core precondition materially limits real-world risk: an attacker must first establish an authorized RustDesk session with the victim. The signals are internally consistent - a low-privilege-required missing-authorization bug (CWE-862) with limited impact and no exploitation evidence - so this is a legitimate authorization-hardening fix, not a high-CVSS/low-real-risk mismatch. Note that the CWE (862, missing authorization) and the input tag 'Authentication Bypass' conflict: this is an authorization bypass within an authenticated session, not an authentication bypass. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds an authorized (but supposedly restricted) RustDesk control session to a Linux or macOS host - one where the file-transfer permission is explicitly disabled - sends crafted Cliprdr file-clipboard messages. Because the Cliprdr handler never checks file_transfer_enabled() for incoming file-data requests, the peer can push files onto the host clipboard and pull back files and clipboard contents from the process-wide clipboard cache, defeating the disabled-file-transfer control. No public proof-of-concept is identified in the supplied data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
RustDesk before 1.5.0 on Linux and macOS fails to enforce its own file-transfer permission setting in the Cliprdr clipboard message handler, so an already-connected, authenticated peer whose file-transfer rights have been disabled can still push files onto the host's clipboard and pull back files and clipboard contents from the process-wide clipboard cache. Exploitation is network-reachable but session-gated: the attacker must first hold an authorized peer connection to the target host (CVSS 4.0 base 5.3, PR:L, C:L/I:L per the assessed vector), making this an escalation of an existing restricted session rather than an unauthenticated entry point. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV; a vendor patch is available from the upstream RustDesk project.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to RustDesk 1.5.0 or later, which is the version boundary after which the missing check is no longer present; the upstream fix is available as PR https://github.com/rustdesk/rustdesk/pull/16333 and commit https://github.com/rustdesk/rustdesk/commit/f299fb9906006247863250d7dfaa016f29eef7a4, though a tagged patched release has not been independently confirmed from this data set beyond the 1.5.0 boundary. Because the flaw is precisely that disabling file transfer does not take effect for Cliprdr data requests, the obvious workaround of turning off file transfer is insufficient on its own: operators should instead disable clipboard sharing/synchronization entirely on the host (RustDesk settings: turn off 'Enable clipboard' / clipboard sync) and disable file copy-and-paste, accepting the loss of legitimate copy-paste convenience, or configure the OPTION_ONE_WAY_FILE_TRANSFER built-in option so the host never serves its own clipboard files to a peer. Additional compensating controls include restricting inbound connections to trusted peers via strong per-session passwords, IP allow-listing, and periodic review of who holds connection credentials to the device, and on macOS additionally gating screen-recording/accessibility-adjacent permissions so unattended access is minimized - each of these reduces exposure but does not remove the underlying missing authorization check, so patching remains the primary action.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) in RustDesk's implementation of the CLIPRDR clipboard-redirection virtual channel, the RDP-derived protocol RustDesk uses to synchronize clipboards between peers. In affected builds, the message handler in src/server/connection.rs (lines ~3074-3092 in 1.4.9) dispatched incoming clipboard messages, including the request-type messages FormatDataRequest and FileContentsRequest, without first consulting the connection's file-transfer permission state via file_transfer_enabled(). RustDesk also maintains a process-wide clipboard file cache, so content staged or requested through this path can persist beyond a single exchange. The upstream fix (PR #16333, commit f299fb9906006247863250d7dfaa016f29eef7a4) introduces an is_file_data_request() helper in src/clipboard_file.rs that classifies FormatDataRequest and FileContentsRequest as data-serving requests, while deliberately leaving peer-originated messages (MonitorReady, FormatList, FormatListResponse, FormatDataResponse, FileContentsResponse, TryEmpty, Files) allowed. The handler in connection.rs is then gated on both crate::is_support_file_copy_paste(&self.lr.version) and self.file_transfer_enabled(), with an additional branch honoring the OPTION_ONE_WAY_FILE_TRANSFER built-in option so that a host configured for one-way transfer never serves its own clipboard files to the peer. The defect is specific to the Linux and macOS builds referenced by the 'Apple' tag and the advisory scope; Windows behavior is not named in the source intelligence.

DescriptionCVE.org
RustDesk versions before 1.5.0 fail to properly validate file transfer permissions on incoming file clipboard messages in the Cliprdr message handler on Linux and macOS. Authenticated remote peers with disabled file transfer permissions can place files onto the host clipboard and retrieve copied files and contents from the process-wide clipboard cache.
