MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to deliver a crafted URL (via the xredirect parameter of the delete-confirmation / DeleteApplication flow) to a victim and have that victim interact - specifically click the 'No' button on the deletion confirmation message (UI:P). No attacker authentication is needed (PR:N), but meaningful impact is gated on the VICTIM'S privilege level: the advisory's arbitrary-action/RCE outcome applies only when the clicking victim holds admin or programming rights. It affects default template code in XWiki Platform Flamingo Skin Resources and Web Templates versions >= 6.2-milestone-1 and < 16.10.10, and 17.0.0-rc-1 through < 17.4.2; instances on 16.10.10, 17.4.2, or 17.5.0+ (or with the manual template patch and restart applied) are not vulnerable. |
| Impact | This is a reflected XSS (CWE-79) in XWiki Platform's Flamingo Skin Resources and Web Templates, triggered via the xredirect parameter in the delete-confirmation flow. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P) scores 6.5 and is internally consistent: network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated attacker, but requiring victim interaction (clicking the 'No' button) - hence the moderate rather than critical rating. Note the 4.0 vector encodes impact as subsequent-system (SC:H/SI:H/SA:H) with vulnerable-system VC/VI/VA:N, reflecting that the script executes in the victim's browser/session rather than directly against the XWiki server. EPSS is modest at 0.51% (41st percentile), indicating no strong signal of mass exploitation, and there is no CISA KEV listing. However, publicly available exploit material exists (the XWiki JIRA issue XWIKI-23244 is tagged as an exploit reference) and a detailed GHSA advisory plus commit-level source evidence are public, lowering the bar to weaponization. The critical amplifier is context-dependent: per the GHSA, if the victim holds admin or programming rights, the reflected script can perform arbitrary privileged actions up to remote code execution on the installation. So real-world priority is moderate-to-high for XWiki operators - the raw 6.5 understates worst-case impact against privileged victims, while the UI:P requirement and low EPSS keep it below drop-everything urgency. This is a genuine issue to patch, not merely a high-number-low-risk artifact, but exploitation realistically depends on social-engineering a privileged user. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a URL to a target XWiki instance's delete-confirmation page with a malicious payload injected via the xredirect parameter and lures an authenticated admin/programming-right user to open it (phishing link). When the victim clicks the 'No' button on the confirmation dialog, the attacker-supplied script executes in their session, enabling privileged actions up to remote code execution. Public exploit/reproduction detail exists via the XWiki JIRA issue (XWIKI-23244) and the GHSA advisory, so reproduction is straightforward. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in XWiki Platform's Flamingo Skin Resources and Web Templates lets an attacker craft a URL whose xredirect parameter is rendered unsafely into a deletion-confirmation message, executing attacker-controlled script when the victim clicks the "No" button. All instances of both packages from 6.2-milestone-1 through 16.10.9, and from 17.0.0-rc-1 through 17.4.1, are affected; the flaw no longer exists on 16.10.10, 17.4.2, or 17.5.0+. No attacker authentication is required (PR:N) but exploitation is interaction-dependent (UI:R), and while the base impact on a low-privileged victim is limited, a victim holding admin or programming rights can be leveraged to perform arbitrary actions, including remote code execution. Publicly available exploit code exists and EPSS estimates a low 0.51% probability (41st percentile), with no confirmed active exploitation in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a fixed release of XWiki Platform: 16.10.10 or 17.4.2 for the respective affected branches, or to 17.5.0 or later, which contains the corrected templates (per GHSA-7vpr-jm38-wr7w). The fix is delivered as a vendor-released patch and is also available as a specific commit, cb578b1b2910d06e9dd7581077072d1cfbd280f2, which replaces the vulnerable inline-JavaScript button markup with plain anchor links in xwiki-platform-flamingo-skin-resources (flamingo/macros.vm) and xwiki-platform-web-templates (templates/macros.vm). Where upgrading is not immediately possible, operators can manually apply that patch to the macros.vm templates present in the deployed WAR - this is the vendor-documented workaround - but note that XWiki must be restarted for the change to take effect, and that any subsequent redeployment of the unpatched WAR will reintroduce the flaw. Because exploitation requires the victim to click the "No" button on a crafted delete-confirmation URL, interim risk can also be reduced by limiting who can be induced to follow untrusted links, particularly by protecting admin and programming-rights accounts (whose compromise is what elevates this from limited XSS impact to arbitrary actions and potential remote code execution), and by hardening the deployment against reflected-XSS delivery (for example a Content-Security-Policy that blocks inline script). These compensating measures do not remove the underlying template flaw and should not be treated as a substitute for the patch. Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is improper neutralization of input during web page generation (CWE-79). XWiki's Velocity templates - specifically flamingo/macros.vm in xwiki-platform-flamingo-skin-resources and templates/macros.vm in xwiki-platform-web-templates - build a delete-confirmation dialog by interpolating the request's xredirect URL into inline JavaScript, notably into an input button's onclick="location='$urlno'; return false;" handler. Because the URL value is placed inside a JavaScript string context without adequate escaping, a crafted xredirect parameter breaks out of the string and injects script that runs in the victim's browser session when the "No" button is clicked. The upstream fix (commit cb578b1b2910d06e9dd7581077072d1cfbd280f2, tracked as XWIKI-23244 and GHSA-7vpr-jm38-wr7w) removes the JavaScript-based navigation entirely, replacing the <input type="button" onclick="..."> elements with plain <a href="$urlno" class="button secondary"> anchors so the URL is consumed only in its intended navigational context rather than embedded in script. The vulnerability class is a reflected (non-stored) XSS: the malicious payload travels in the request and is echoed back in the response for that single interaction, and the affected components are the default skin and web templates that ship in the standard XWiki WAR distribution (CPE cpe:2.3:a:xwiki:xwiki:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*).

DescriptionCVE.org
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. Versions 6.2-milestone-1 through 16.10.9 and 17.0.0-rc-1 through 17.4.1 of both XWiki Platform Flamingo Skin Resources and XWiki Platform Web Templates are vulnerable to a reflected XSS attack through a deletion confirmation message. The attacker-supplied script is executed when the victim clicks the "No" button. This issue is fixed in versions 16.10.10 and 17.4.2 of both XWiki Platform Flamingo Skin Resources and XWiki Platform Web Templates.
