| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires network reachability to the Wekan attachment upload API endpoint (/api/attachment/*) on an instance running version 18.15 or earlier. The only precondition is sending any non-empty Authorization bearer token - no valid credentials, no specific configuration, and no user interaction are needed (CVSS PR:N/UI:N), because the pre-fix code accepts the bearer value as a userId and enters a non-terminating body-handling branch for any non-empty value. Limiting factors: the instance must be network-accessible to the attacker (internet-exposed or reachable internal deployment), and the reliably-achievable impact is availability (DoS); the integrity/identity-spoofing impact is characterized as 'latent' and may require additional conditions not detailed in the advisory. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H, base 8.2) describes a remote, network-reachable, low-complexity flaw requiring no privileges or user interaction, with high availability impact and low integrity impact and no confidentiality impact - consistent with the description's 'trivial application-layer DoS' and 'latent identity-spoofing.' The root cause (CWE-287) is that the attachment upload API accepts the Authorization bearer value as a userId and enters a non-terminating body-handling branch for any non-empty token, so a single malformed request can hang connections and exhaust resources; the vendor fix (commit ccd9034) adds real token validation via Accounts._hashLoginToken, a 30-second timeout, and 50MB/10MB body-size limits, confirming both the DoS and the spoofing vectors. On real-world risk signals: no EPSS score was provided, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public POC is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - meaning this is a genuine, easily-triggered flaw but without evidence of active exploitation or weaponization. The availability impact is the dominant, reliably-achievable outcome; the 'identity-spoofing' is described as 'latent,' so the I:L rating and real attack value are less certain and should be verified against the actual handler behavior. Net: a legitimate high-priority patch for any internet-exposed Wekan instance (trivially exploitable DoS), but overall campaign-level risk is tempered by the product's limited deployment footprint and absence of exploitation evidence. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker sends a crafted request to the Wekan attachment upload API (/api/attachment/*) with any non-empty Authorization bearer value, causing the server to treat it as a userId and enter a non-terminating body-handling branch that hangs the connection. Repeating this concurrently exhausts server resources and denies service to legitimate users; the same mis-handling latently permits acting under a spoofed identity. No public exploit code is referenced, but the condition is trivial to reproduce from the description and vendor fix. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Remote, unauthenticated application-layer denial of service in the Wekan open-source kanban board affects versions up to and including 18.15 (fixed in 18.16). The attachment upload API treats the Authorization bearer value as a userId and enters a non-terminating body-handling branch for any non-empty bearer token, so a single low-complexity request can hang connections and exhaust server resources, with a secondary latent identity-spoofing risk (CVSS 3.1 base 8.2, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV; no EPSS value was provided in the input data.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Wekan to version 18.16 or later, which is the release documented in the changelog (https://github.com/wekan/wekan/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md#v816-2025-11-02-wekan--release) and which incorporates the fix commit https://github.com/wekan/wekan/commit/ccd90343394f433b287733ad0a33c08e0a71f53c that enforces X-User-Id/X-Auth-Token token validation, a 30-second handler timeout, and 50MB/10MB body-size limits. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls for 18.15 and earlier include: restrict network access to the /api/attachment/* endpoints at a reverse proxy or firewall so only trusted clients can reach them (side effect: may break legitimate external integrations that upload or fetch attachments); configure the fronting proxy with short idle/read timeouts and hard request-body size caps to cut off the hanging body-handling branch before resources are exhausted (side effect: large legitimate uploads near the limit may fail and require a documented higher cap for trusted paths); and apply per-client rate limiting on attachment endpoints to blunt concurrent-request exhaustion (side effect: throttling may affect bulk or automated clients). Because the flaw also permits latent identity spoofing via arbitrary bearer values, do not rely on bearer tokens alone as an authorization boundary until the upgrade is applied, and audit attachment access logs for requests carrying unexpected Authorization values. Technical ContextAI · show details
Wekan is a Meteor/Node.js kanban application whose REST attachment endpoints live under /api/attachment/*. The root cause is CWE-287 (Improper Authentication): the pre-fix request handler accepted the Authorization bearer value directly as a user identifier and, for any non-empty bearer token, followed a body-handling code path that never terminated, so the connection was held open instead of returning an error. Because the handler did not validate the token against stored credentials, the flaw simultaneously enables resource exhaustion (availability impact) and provides a path toward assuming the identity named in the bearer value, described by the vendor as latent identity spoofing. The upstream fix in commit ccd90343394f433b287733ad0a33c08e0a71f53c replaces implicit trust of the bearer value with explicit authentication using X-User-Id and X-Auth-Token headers, validates the token by hashing with Accounts._hashLoginToken and matching against services.resume.loginTokens.hashedToken, enforces a 30-second handler timeout, applies request body size limits (50MB for uploads, 10MB for metadata operations), adds guaranteed response completion and request error cleanup, and verifies board membership for all attachment operations. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:wekan_project:wekan:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.

DescriptionNVD
An issue was discovered in Wekan The Open Source kanban board system up to version 18.15, fixed in 18.16. Attachment upload API treats the Authorization bearer value as a userId and enters a non-terminating body-handling branch for any non-empty bearer token, enabling trivial application-layer DoS and latent identity-spoofing.
Executive ViewAI
Wekan kanban deployments at version 18.15 or earlier can be knocked offline by a single unauthenticated request to the attachment upload API, allowing any external party to exhaust server resources without credentials; version 18.16 resolves the flaw. Because Wekan is typically self-hosted and serves as the primary task-tracking surface for project teams, an outage degrades work visibility for every user of the affected instance, and the same vulnerable code path carries a secondary risk of one user acting under another user's identity. Leadership should prioritize remediation where the instance is internet-facing or broadly reachable.
