| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires local access to a device running an affected TeamViewer DEX (former 1E DEX) version prior to V17.1, plus pre-existing write access to a directory that appears in the system PATH. The 1E-Nomad-SetWorkRate instruction resolves executables through an uncontrolled/untrusted search path (CWE-427), so a binary planted in such a directory is executed as SYSTEM. Limiting factors: no remote vector (AV:L), no user interaction needed (UI:N), only versions before V17.1 are affected, and the attacker must already hold the privileges needed to write into a PATH directory (vendor-rated PR:H) - on correctly configured systems this is normally an administrative capability, which significantly constrains who can exploit it. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, locally-exploitable privilege-escalation issue rather than a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 6.7 Medium) requires local access and already-elevated privileges (PR:H), which sharply limits reach, even though the technical impact is full SYSTEM compromise (C:H/I:H/A:H). All exploitation signals point the same direction: EPSS is very low (0.18%, 7th percentile), the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is referenced - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The signals are consistent (low EPSS + no KEV + high privilege requirement all indicate low real-world urgency), with no conflicts to flag. Note one nuance worth verifying with the vendor: the description frames this as escalation by a 'local attacker with write access to a PATH directory,' yet the vendor scored PR:H - on a well-configured host, write access to a PATH directory normally already requires administrative rights, so the practical gain is admin→SYSTEM; the scenario becomes more dangerous only where a lower-privileged user has write access to a misconfigured PATH directory. Priority should be routine patching to V17.1, not emergency response. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local user (or attacker who has already gained a foothold) with write access to a directory listed in the system PATH plants a malicious executable matching a name the 1E-Nomad-SetWorkRate instruction resolves via its uncontrolled search path. When the DEX/Nomad component runs that instruction, it loads and executes the attacker's binary in the SYSTEM context, yielding full local compromise. No public proof-of-concept exploit is referenced in the available data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026
Local privilege escalation in TeamViewer DEX (formerly 1E DEX) versions prior to V17.1 lets an attacker who already holds write access to a directory listed in the system PATH plant a malicious executable that the 1E-Nomad-SetWorkRate instruction resolves and runs with SYSTEM privileges. The root cause is an uncontrolled search path (CWE-427), so exploitation is local, requires no user interaction, and is gated by high-privilege pre-conditions (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 6.7) - on a well-configured host the required write access is itself an administrative capability, which substantially limits the realistic attack surface. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is low at 0.18% (7th percentile), making this a moderate post-access escalation rather than an emergency.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: V17.1 - upgrade TeamViewer DEX (1E DEX) to V17.1 or later per bulletin TV-2025-1006 (https://www.teamviewer.com/en/resources/trust-center/security-bulletins/tv-2025-1006/), which is the only complete fix for the uncontrolled search path in 1E-Nomad-SetWorkRate. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, the effective compensating control follows directly from the exploit precondition: audit the machine PATH and tighten NTFS ACLs on every directory in it (and on any directory the Nomad/SYSTEM-context tasks execute from) so that only SYSTEM, Administrators, and TrustedInstaller can create files, removing write access for standard users and non-privileged service accounts - the trade-off is that legitimate installers or third-party tools that expect to write to those paths may break. Redundant or world-writable directories can also be removed from the system PATH, though this risks breaking tooling that depends on implicit path resolution, and removing a PATH entry does not protect directories still referenced elsewhere. Because detection is easy to miss, add integrity monitoring/whitelisting for new executables appearing in PATH directories on DEX-managed endpoints, and restrict the 1E-Nomad-SetWorkRate instruction via policy if it is not operationally required, accepting that doing so disables that scheduling capability. Exploitation requires local access plus pre-existing write access (PR:H), so hardening local account and ACL hygiene materially reduces exposure until V17.1 is deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw sits in the 1E-Nomad-SetWorkRate instruction shipped with TeamViewer DEX, the rebranded successor to the 1E DEX platform (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:teamviewer:digital_employee_experience:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*). Nomad is the instruction/content-execution component that runs tasks under the highly privileged SYSTEM account; because SetWorkRate resolves the executable it invokes through the ambient PATH rather than an absolute, trusted location, it exhibits CWE-427 (Uncontrolled Search Path Element). Any binary placed earlier in the effective search order - in a directory the attacker can write to - is transparently loaded and executed as SYSTEM, turning a write primitive into full local privilege escalation with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact (C:H/I:H/A:H). The attack vector is strictly local (AV:L), attack complexity is low (AC:L), and no user interaction is needed (UI:N), but the CVSS vector's PR:H reflects the vendor's position that the attacker must already possess the privileges needed to write into a PATH directory - typically an administrator-level capability on correctly configured endpoints.

DescriptionNVD
A privilege escalation vulnerability was discovered in TeamViewer DEX (former 1E DEX), specifically within the 1E-Nomad-SetWorkRate instruction prior V17.1. The improper handling of executable search paths could allow local attackers with write access to a PATH directory on a device to escalate privileges and execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM.
