MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an administrator account to create or edit an Alert Transport (the injection point is the Transport name field at /alert-transports), and the payload only fires when an administrator subsequently views the Alert Rules page at /alert-rules. Per the vendor advisory, only admins can create transports and only admins can view the affected page, so both exploitation and impact are confined to the administrator role - this is the primary limiting factor. There is no anonymous or low-privilege path; realistic abuse requires either a rogue admin, a compromised admin account, or tricking an admin into saving a crafted transport name. Affected: LibreNMS <= 25.8.0; fixed in 25.10.0. |
| Impact | This is a stored XSS (CWE-79) with a modest CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.8, and the vector itself is the dominant risk-limiting signal: AV:N but PR:H (administrator required to inject) and UI:R (an admin must then load the Alert Rules page). The GHSA advisory explicitly confirms that both the injection point (/alert-transports) and the execution point (/alert-rules) are restricted to administrators, so this is effectively an admin-to-admin (or self-) XSS rather than a privilege-escalation-from-anonymous path. The strongest countervailing signal is EPSS: 12.72% at the 96th percentile is unusually high for a low-CVSS XSS and indicates meaningful real-world exploitation probability - but EPSS reflects general exploitation likelihood and should not be over-read here given the hard PR:H precondition. This vulnerability is NOT CISA KEV-listed, so there is no confirmed active exploitation; the high EPSS plus public POC suggests opportunistic interest rather than observed campaigns. Net assessment: a genuine but lower-tier priority - patch in normal cycles. The conflict worth flagging explicitly is EPSS/percentile (high) versus CVSS and the admin-only scope (low real-world reach); the admin precondition should take precedence in prioritization. No data is missing or internally contradictory; the CVSS network vector is consistent with the web-based description. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A malicious or compromised administrator (or an attacker who tricks an admin via CSRF/social engineering) creates an Alert Transport whose name field contains an HTML/JS payload such as "'onfocus='alert(1)' autofocus=". When any administrator later opens the Alert Rules page, the unsanitized transport name renders in the Transports column and the JavaScript executes in that admin's authenticated session. A public POC with full reproduction steps exists in the GHSA advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in LibreNMS 25.8.0 and earlier lets an authenticated administrator persist JavaScript through the Transport name field, which executes in an administrator's browser when the Alert Rules page is viewed. The issue is fixed in 25.10.0; publicly available exploit code exists, and EPSS is elevated at 12.72% (96th percentile), but exploitation and impact are confined to administrator accounts because both creating transports and viewing Alert Rules require admin privileges. An attacker with a rogue or compromised admin account could use the stored payload to perform actions in the admin's LibreNMS session, though the vector's PR:H and UI:R requirements substantially limit exposure.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 25.10.0. Upgrade LibreNMS to 25.10.0 or later; the fix is in commit 706a77085f4d5964f7de9444208ef707e1f79450 with an additional patch ref e1ead366239b57e88f9a06d4f7c213b1e2530cd8, and it applies HTML escaping to transport names in print-alert-rules.php. If upgrade cannot be done immediately, restrict administrator access to trusted accounts, audit existing Alert Transports for HTML or event-handler syntax and remove or rename suspicious entries, and monitor admin account activity; those controls reduce exposure but do not eliminate the missing output encoding. Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-79 missing output encoding in includes/html/print-alert-rules.php, where transport names are concatenated directly into HTML anchor attributes and link text. The vendor fix wraps those values with e(), LibreNMS's HTML-escaping helper, in both the data-content popover text and the visible anchor body. An administrator supplies the payload in the Transport name field at /alert-transports; it is stored and later rendered in the Transports column of /alert-rules, so a value such as 'onfocus='alert(1)' autofocus= can break out of the attribute context and execute when the element gains focus. The CPE identifies LibreNMS broadly, but the advisory limits affected releases to <= 25.8.0 and the patch lands in 25.10.0.

DescriptionNVD
LibreNMS is a community-based GPL-licensed network monitoring system. LibreNMS <= 25.8.0 contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Alert Transports management functionality. When an administrator creates a new Alert Transport, the value of the Transport name field is stored and later rendered in the Transports column of the Alert Rules page without proper input validation or output encoding. This leads to arbitrary JavaScript execution in the admin’s browser. This vulnerability is fixed in 25.10.0.
