Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated low-privileged account within a BigBlueButton session (PR:L) whose username field the attacker fully controls, use of the Shared Notes feature to render that username, and - critically - a higher-privileged victim (e.g., an Admin) must open the Shared Notes page for the stored payload to fire (UI:R). Exploitation is limited by the need for session access/authentication, dependence on victim interaction, and the fix in 3.0.13 (bbb-pads v1.5.4) applying HTML-entity escaping to the username. There is no evidence of a non-default configuration requirement - Shared Notes is standard functionality - so the primary real-world limiters are the authentication and victim-view prerequisites, which make this better suited to targeted privilege escalation than mass exploitation.

Impact

This is a medium-severity (CVSS 5.4) stored XSS in BigBlueButton's Shared Notes feature, and all available signals are internally consistent, pointing to a genuine but non-urgent issue rather than a high-priority emergency. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) requires an authenticated low-privileged account (PR:L) plus victim interaction - a higher-privileged user must open the Shared Notes page (UI:R) - which substantially narrows the exploitation window. EPSS is low at 0.24% (15th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis, all of which align with a low likelihood of widespread opportunistic exploitation. The scope change (S:C) and cross-privilege impact (a low-priv user executing JavaScript in an Admin's context) are the aggravating factors that explain the medium score despite only Low confidentiality/integrity impact and no availability impact. No signals conflict: low EPSS, absent KEV, and a vector demanding both authentication and a victim action all reinforce that this is a real-but-targeted privilege-escalation-flavored XSS that is appropriately patched rather than a drop-everything priority. Treat it as a standard patch-cycle item, prioritized somewhat higher for internet-facing education/webinar deployments where untrusted or self-registered participants can join sessions.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged participant joins a BigBlueButton session and sets their username to a value containing a malicious JavaScript payload, then edits content in the Shared Notes feature so the username is rendered on the Shared Notes page. When an Admin or other higher-privileged user opens that page, the script executes in their authenticated browser context. No public exploit code was identified, but payload construction is straightforward given the confirmed stored-XSS sink in the username field (AV:N/AC:L).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting (XSS) in BigBlueButton before 3.0.13 lets an authenticated low-privileged session participant inject JavaScript through the username field, which then executes when higher-privileged users open the Shared Notes page. Exploitation requires the attacker to control their username, use Shared Notes, and persuade an Admin or other privileged user to view that page, making this a targeted privilege-escalation risk rather than a mass-exploitation issue. The vendor fixed the flaw in 3.0.13 via bbb-pads v1.5.4; EPSS is low at 0.24%, and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade BigBlueButton to 3.0.13 or later, which incorporates the fixed bbb-pads v1.5.4 code. Confirm that the deployment is actually cloning or running bbb-pads v1.5.4, since BigBlueButton PR 23693 changes the placeholder script to pull that release, and apply bbb-pads v1.5.4 directly if that component is managed separately. Consult the vendor advisory at https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/security/advisories/GHSA-9jv9-cjrm-grj2 and the bbb-pads patch at https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bbb-pads/pull/67. If immediate upgrade is not possible, temporarily disable or restrict the Shared Notes feature to trusted sessions and prevent privileged users from opening Shared Notes in sessions with untrusted participants; these controls reduce exposure but do not sanitize already stored malicious usernames.

Technical ContextAI · show details

BigBlueButton's Shared Notes functionality depends on bbb-pads, a Node.js component that processes user-related events through Redis handlers and renders note content in the web UI. In affected versions, the username received by the handleUserCreated path was stored without HTML escaping and later reflected into the Shared Notes page, so a crafted username could carry executable markup. The upstream fix adds an htmlEscape() helper in lib/redis/utils.js and applies it to body.name in lib/redis/handler.js, neutralizing &, <, >, double quotes, and single quotes. This is a CWE-79 improper-neutralization issue in a user-controlled persistent field, with impact limited by the need for an authenticated low-privileged account, a privileged victim viewing the page, and the scope change associated with script execution in the victim's browser context.

DescriptionNVD

BigBlueButton is an open-source virtual classroom. In versions prior to 3.0.13, the "Shared Notes" feature contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability with the input location being the "Username" field and the output location on the "Shared Notes" page, when a user with a malicious username is editing content. This vulnerability allows a low-privileged user to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of higher-privileged users (e.g., Admins) who open the Shared Notes page. Version 3.0.13 fixes the issue.
